Bands You Loved Until After Their Second Album

I played the first album to death and bought all the singles and pored over each b-side and remix; it still reminds me of a nice period from five or so years ago.
The second album was alright but you could tell they were trying to go all Coldplay/U2 stadium rawk and it was all starting to sound a bit generic-anthemic with a trendy producer at the helm. Still some good songs though.
The third album so far has left me very "meh". His voice has gone all funny and I thought while Papillon's a good single it's somewhat ruined by his weird fucking intonation... I've heard him speak (Smith) and he sounds totally normal so fuck knows why he hams up that Elton John-like Southern drawl 
it's gotten much worse since the debut.
Perhaps it will grow on me though, I haven't totally given up on them just yet. Overall though they've definitely gone a bit downhill though.
Erm, not sure Kings of Leon were ever up to much...

I loved the Killers first album and Coldplays was pretty good as well.

I'm a big Simple Minds fan since 1985. They had their ups and downs for sure. The latest album is nice stuff pulling them out of the recent hole a bit. But that's my personal opinion ;).
If the spark isn't there leave the music alone. Not everybody has to like what you, me or whoever likes...
That's what makes me one of a few Six.by Seven fans in the world

but I did kind of like the first Scissor Sisters album. I've burned it since.

My guess is that they had many years without an album produced, and had songs in their heads that had alot of time to be refined... then they feel pressure to create another album in less than a year, and of course without the refinement its just shite. But I've never played in a band, so who knows if I'm right.

NO-though i own several copies including the Japan CD.Still don't like it-even the HESSIAN covered one.
It's slowly been dawning on me over the past few months that Editors most recent album is probably my favourite record of all time. Talk about a 'grower'. Took me weeks to 'get it'. Almost gave up. But it's a masterpiece. Shivers down the back of the neck from start to finish.
Anyway, back on topic. I would say The Killers were a band I loved until after the second side of their first album. Five amazing tracks back to back then 5 tracks of total filler. And fuck all worth getting excited about among their subsequent releases.

I remember Tracey Chapman giving interviews on the lead in to releasing her second album. She said something about her first album taking 20 years to write and the second one taking 18 months. I can't remember what conclusions she was attempting to draw from this but her first album was a classic and her second was crap.

That's something I've heard trotted out before (not in relation to Tracy Chapman though, she's just shit). Bands have got their whole life to compose that first album. Then they need to replicate that creativity in 18 months. it's hard and it's the mark of truly great bands if they can do it and keep on doing it.
I read that the first ever song The Killers wrote was Mr Brightside. They should've split after that.
I would change the thread title to After Their First Album.
Lost count of how many 2nd albums I've got that are a huge let down compared to the first. Reckon its the reason that's been given.....by the time that first album comes out bands have rejected half the songs they've written, and just released the best. After that, with a label on board pressurising them for a return on investment they have to deliver to a time scale and the standards of quality control drop to achieve this. As G-man says, it's a big test of the bands talent at this point.
Sorry to say this, but going by the new ones I've heard them play live The Whip are shaping up to release a crap second album. It seems to have taken them ages though.

I know there's a concept of a making a difficult 2nd album but I found that there were a few bands who made such a good 2nd one (JD NO AND U2). But I think the pressure must come into it to produce a follow up so soon after you've basically used all your good ideas that you've had kicking around for yrs.

I still repeat the line of a friend of mine: "I liked them at the beginning, but they are too much commercial by now".
Except a few exceptions to the rule, that line sums it up very efficientely.

Ahhhh the favourite line of the pretentious 18 year old twat! Surely nobody of 'adult age' drops this line into normal conversation?? Completely meaningless and translates as
'I liked their music until lots of other people started liking their music. Other people liking their music made the music bad'.
The obvious one-Oasis. Although technically The B-sides Masterplan album was their third record,and also a very good record. Pretty shite after that.

Indeed. The friend I refer to is someone completely out of music. Except a few tracks, his musical culture equals 0.1. We use this line to cut off endless conversations and in no pretentious way. Maybe a lack in forums, I was more ironic than pretentious.
The way I listen to music is quite odd. Instead of listening a cd straight, I pick one song a month for a 18 tracks monthly playlist – it has something to do with 90 minutes tapes. At the moment, I am listening to the first songs of the last Editors. The opening one and the first one of the bonus cd. I still cannot understand why Editors appear so many times in this thread and I have been very interested by what you wrote about them because it was a very different point of view to the main one. But we will have to wait for December 1st 2011 to know if I agree with you or with the others about this third Editors…
Nine Inch Nails.
PHM is epic, Broken, although an extended EP stands pretty well on its own and is also a classic. Downward Spiral and everything after was a major dissapointment.
