What's with the discontentment towards Bad Lieutenant?

Hey all,

I figure maybe the general discussion board is more appropriate for this.

I for one has nothing against BL. We flew into SF and found out the show got canceled. Sure it was unexpected and we were disappointed. But what can you do.

We decided to the make the best of the trip. Ended up discovering new places to eat/shop in North Beach, Chinatown and Union Square. Even tried House of Prime Rib (which was just a few blocks north of where BL was supposed to play).

What I can't comprehend is the number of other fans who expressed their discontentment towards BL for canceling and not immediately rescheduling the US shows. First there is the sympathy comment, ie it's ok, don't fly, it's dangerous, hope all is well. Then once that's over, the demand for special attention, backstage passes, wow you guys scheduled more tours in Europe and not US etc. What's next? Go to BL's site and their FB/myspace sites and you will know what I mean. My advice to these folks...if you're still pissed off at BL, grow up.

No one likes to be disappointed. This I understand. But what happened this time is beyond their control. As a fan of NO/JD, I thought we should be graceful enough to be understanding and patient. We did wait 8 years for a NO album (1993 to 2001).

I can't speak for anyone, but it probably is linked to how much Barney & company just love to tour the US...

...if they toured more often as NO in the past, the discontent would probably not be so high... but anything easily derails from Barney from touring in the US.

The problem here is in the original post, where there is not one mention of going on a massive compensatory bender after the gig was cancelled. Instead, finding 'new places' to "shop" and "eat" was top of the agenda.

Sometimes even volcanoes know what they're doing.

If it's any consolation to our Yank friends who missed the gigs can I just state that having seen BL recently they are in fact shite and you're not missing anything. Although 'Tighten Up' was quite nice in a castrated, inoffensive way.

Perhaps they should contact you first, and see if you have room in your diary before they plan a US tour schedule?

Technique was released 21 years ago. Republic was released 17 years ago.

How many fans would you say they've added since then?

The Republic tour had a grand total of 8 North American dates.

Since then they've played a grand total of 8 additional North American shows (4 in 2001 - all at festivals, 4 in 2005, 1 of which was at a festival).

Bernard's not wanting to tour was always put forth as one of the reasons the band split, because Hooky wanted to play out more, yet Bad Loo has played dates around Europe twice In the last 6 months?

I'd say he has a point. New Order, all their myriad side projects, and Bernard and Hooky's attitudes in general are nothing if not a constant source of frustration for fans.

Its about time some sense has finally been spoken on this board! Now if only Hooky and Barney could finally get with the program!

and what 50 pound was talking about was more or less what I was referring to... my parents wouldn't let me out to a gig until I was a junior in high school (Republic time period), so all the past gigs mean absolutely nothing to me.

and the few gigs here weren't always great either. The one for Republic (that I should have gone to if my ex at the time hadn't stolen my tickets), only lasted 30 minutes after Barney got pissed and stormed off the stage.

People are still bitter over Joy Division never showing up in 1980.

If New Order had more live dates in the USA in the last 20 years, having the idea of Bernard playing live would be less of a novelty. Interest would be less.

I flew and SF and was upset. Had the chance to see The Dead Weather and PiL so it was not a wasted trip. Dead Weather was mind blowing...Got to see my Mom and had a great time with my son in my favorite city. I am still upset but ohhh well... I was lucky to enough to see NO 6 times in the US since 1986, Revenge once and Monaco once.. and I am still kinda pissed. NO kinda always favored SF as a city they like.I am hoping BL really feel they owe the US to make up for the really bad luck they have had. I know most UK acts like to stay over there for summer festivals so I am thinking maybe later in the year.But then it would so long after the release. They could working on new material or time off like Bearnard has discussed this fall. Who knows...All I have been listening to lately is NO though so I am still in depression mode. Maybe not too many opportunities left to see any kinda of incarnation of NO as they older going into their 60's. I think Bernard will always be making music but probably not touring.Just my 2 cents

I don't understand it myself. In a way it's got a humourous side to it. Two times I've bought tickets, got psyched up, played the album to death and then nothing. I do hope they'll play one show in their career here though.

Think it was more that Bernard didnt want to tour WITH HOOKY!

Wouldn't have been many gigs if he did that every time he got pissed.

The new Bad Loo movie is out next week, with Nicholas Cage in the Bernard Sumner role. He uses sharp put downs and knackered synths to kosh the bad guys with. Oh he also keeps gambling huge amounts of money on some baseball player called Anthony "Strawberry" Wilson. You know he's gonna loose...
