I just watched Match Of The Day which had brief highlights of the Faroe Islands vs. Scotland match and Alan Hansen was right when he said that Scotland were lucky to get a draw. The Faroe Islands should have won that match because their scorer John Petersen missed a sitter that would have given him a hat-trick and the first Scottish goal got a lucky deflection. I'm not saying that because I'm not one of those English people who takes pleasure in Scottish sporting failure: I want Scotland to do well, especially for the Tartan Army who haven't let the players, the team or the country down in the way that many so-called England fans have over the years. I'm saying it because that's what I saw on MOTD (albeit only from brief highlights so if someone who saw the whole game or longer highlights thinks Scotland deserved a draw or even a win please say so) and what I saw made me feel sad.

I can remember watching Kenny Dalglish playing for Liverpool on TV when I was a kid, watching him turn in the tightest spaces, shoot and score in the blink of an eye and thinking he was a footballing god. He was the best player in the best club team in Europe, if not the world, and whilst there wasn't another Dalglish Scotland produced more great players such as Souness, Gemmill, Strachan, McAllister and Hendry (and people who know more about Scottish football could probably name more). How many Scottish players playing now could you describe as great? How many Scottish players play regularly for Celtic or Rangers, never mind top clubs in other countries? Where is Berti Vogts or any future Scotland coach going to find the players to take Scotland into the finals of the European Championship or the World Cup?

Top-of-the-table Old Firm derbies may be great occasions but if Scottish football is going to recover it needs better domestic competition, more involvement in European club competition and greater strength in depth. I don't know what the solution to Scotland's problems is but I know that a Celtic-Rangers duopoly won't deliver those things, Celtic and Rangers leaving the Scottish League won't and sacking Berti Vogts before he's got his feet under the table won't either. I just hope that Scotland can find the solutions to its problems.

P.S. If I should ever need to seek asylum, even though I'm English can I come to Scotland if I promise to be good?

There has been a massive national outcry after the appalling and humiliating 2-2 draw between the Faroe Islands and Scotland. Fans and media are now demanding heads should roll as the fury builds over the fact that they can't even beat a side that is basically the equivalent of a local amatuer pub team.

As a result, Faroe Islands manager Henrik Larsen has offered his immediate resignation.
