that's what we expect from someone like you 
on a more sensible note, there's plenty of reasonable cars about, an 02-03 focus 1.6 should be around that price, get looking on ebay, auto trader etc.
I ran an 01 1.7TDi Astra Estate, slow but very economical, 50mpg+, cheap tax too.
Turbo Diesels are a bit iffy secondhand, cos of all the stuff that can go wrong. And is almost impossible to fix without big expense and no guarantee.
If you can live with the fuel consumption, as mentioned above, the early Focus are well thought of.
