Underworld - A Hundred Days Off

any one else think this is a superb album by Smith & Hyde? Luetin sounds stunning, Trim is a great departure and even the ambient bits sound pleasant through my headphones.....i love this album almost as much as Get Ready when it was released....would love to see an Underworld mix of Vicious Streak and Subculture......should get Smith/Hyde in for some production on the next album actually....their work on Tiger Bay - St. Etienne... was top notch....

Just got it. I had a few tracks on mp3 already. First impression is not quite as good as Beaucoup Fish but still a strong album.

I got a promo of it a little while ago and I like it. I think the single (Two Weeks Off) is the best cut on the album. Don't know the song titles yet, but there are some definite moments on it. I was expecting a little less without Darren Emerson but it suprised me.

I actually didn't like BF that much....the mixes of Cups by Salt City Orchestra and Jumbo by Francois K were the best moments from that album...i love Dubnobass...and consider it to be one of my top 5 albums of all time...this new release has a similar vibe but with a newer sound...try it on headphones several times or until they all sound familiar....i would rather hear Spoonman and River of Bass than Moaner or Pearls Girl if that gives you any indication of why i like Underworld....as for Darren Emerson, i thought his GU mix was absolute rubbish and when i saw him here in Seattle a year of two ago, i was completely disappointed in his selection. He blew it big time and apparently didn't even have the courage to tell the other members of UW that he was leaving....had to get his Lawyer to write a note....a total lack of respect for those he once called "friends"....Emerson can rot in the overflowing pool of Boring DJ's while Rick Smith and Karl Hyde continue to thrill folks like me all over the world....other classic Underworld moments include:

Oh, I agree. That Global Underground CD was pretty lame. I don't think there has been one of those that I liked. His Underwater label was good for a while; sounded a lot like the Rotation stuff. I've never heard him DJ. I, like most, thought he was supposed to be the brains of the bunch but I guess he wasn't.

Not sure I could distinguish between particular strains of Underworld. Already very familiar with Dionosaur Adventure 3D, Sola Systim, Little Speaker and Two Months Off. Which I’ve had for coincidentally 2 months. I quite like Dubnobass now, though I wasn't that struck with it at the time of release, apart from Mmmm Skyscraper. Don't own 2nd toughest for that reason.

That Mental Generaton track is an absolute classic, also a big fan of Water From a Vine Leaf. Rez for me is probably their best work to date.

Just listened to Beacoup Fish and 100 days off back to back. Still going with my initial assertion that the former is better. Kittens is my perticular favourite toe tapper from these two.

... I wish UnderWorms would take 100 years off.

next time you see Seconed Toughest for a good price, definitely pick it up...much better than BF in my opinion.

come on huntsman, you don't like Underworld...or is it that you are sick to death of the Trainspotting song and Pearls Girl? those 2 don't even get played around here but plenty of other gems have been polished up by these guys

BioHazard ... get this, the reason I'm not keen on the worms can be written as an algorithm:

Premise UnderWorm's Initial Intention - to release songs that rely on sounds, beats and mixes (and re-mixes) rather than song format (i.e. we can't manage to craft a decent song format because we aren't classic song writers and as such rely on synths and samplers etc.)

Execution - gather the latest sounds onto misc. synth parts and release until fade - sometimes acquiring a guest vocalist (when the synth parts seem to sound like a proper song)

Problem - The Worms unable to collate any 'hardcore' sounds (despite their best efforts), thus they sound 'weak' when they should sound 'kick arse'. Their production techniques are poor and lacklustre.

People who succeed in this field: Top rappers - production superb (i.e. sounds are from the streets man and processed to the limits) Slipknot, System of a Down etc. - top production, utterly polished. Music might not be everyone's cup of tea but that's not the point ... they all sound good in their on field.

Example with NO: Republic - production = weak (failure) Low-Life - production = cold, cool and raw (success)

So UnderWorms to me never manage to leap the first hurdle ... don't sound mean, you ain't mean. 808 State, on the other hand, similar band but 'at the time' managed it because they sounded cool.

UnderWorms ... very not cool.
