Okay, as some of you people know, I play in a band .. Just done a recording and are ready to gig but we need a name ... After compiling a list of approx 220 names, we finally came up with a name that the 4 of us actually agreed on (a miracle). That being 'The Veils'. So we were all happy that after months and months we'd finally agreed on something.

Now our drummer calls me concerned that the name could be taken the wrong way due to the fact that 'veils' are worn by islam woman (he put the name to one person who basically said the name was offensive). I think this is a crock of shit and that the name couldn't possibly offend anyone so I need the opinions of my fellow New Order Online friends.

Do you think that this name is offensive ? Or do you think its totally innocent ? I think its fine (wedding veils, nuns veils, curtin veils etc etc) ... Anyway, your opinions will be greatfully appreciated ...

couldn't your drummer friend associate the veil with a wedding veil? then it's not so contravoursal!:D

i think your drummer is suffering from a serious case of over-sensitivity. veil could mean anything, like 'thinly veiled', or 'putting up a veil of (fill in the blank)'. not just a veil in the literal sense. so no problem!

Thanks for the responses so far. Keep them coming. It isn't actually our drummer who thinks the name is offensive, he just told one person the name and they kind of freaked out about it. Thats really why I want to get the opinion of everyone else.

I do not buy into the PC madness we are getting into. So keep the name and in any case a little controversy will do you no harm. Did anyone mentioned New Order/ Joy Division ?

wouldn't call it offensive but is it perhaps a little close to the Vines?

a few months ago i thought about calling my musical project "The Neve Campbell's". How about that? :guitar:

I found nothing controversial about it. But even if it was you should go ahead it anyway! I'm sick to death of all this PC/non-PC shit!

one word names are punchier :)

As mentioned, too close to 'The Vines'. Don't proceed, starting off on the wrong foot, people will say 'What!? The Vines' and you'll have to say 'No, The Veils' and they'll go 'isn't that a bit offensive to some?' etc.

The 'Neve Campbell's' is a great name, Party of Five was ace. Aaahh, them were the days.

What about calling yourself after the name of one of your band members?

For what it's worth I can see 'The Veils' causing problems should you become successful. 'Thin Veil' is less pointed, for example. 'The Veils' sounds like a description of a group of people, and therefore could be misinterpreted. Please refer to recent headlines for examples.

'Saxamaphone' is my sugestion.

It rolls of the tongue in a cheeky way and then becomse infectious. Yes you are all probably singing along now. It refences the Simpsons as well *imagine I said that last bit like comic book shop guy*

As I said....."Sunrise".

Sunrise is a good name.

Not sure if it's wise for a NO fan to use a NO song reference for their own band name. Would be harder to shake any comparisons should there be any in evidence.

Would be like someone who liked Paul Daniels touring with a magic tour called Magic Daniels.

I'm with Sloppy Seconds on this one.....Sunrise is a good name, but, and I stress the word BUT, make sure you spell it correctly and don't add an a, otherwise people will be getting ye's mixed up with a Rolf Harris classic, and with you lot being from OZ, that would be a disaster:D

Didgery don't spell it wrong !

Nothing wrong with the "Veils", but I'd like to offer a few alternatives if you guys are looking:

  1. Chronic Town: it's the name of REM's first EP and really sounds good as a band name. However, two negatives- 1.) Could be confused with "Crazy Town", a terrible one-hit wonder here in the States, and 2.) I'm thinking of using it myself for the band I'd like to eventually start.

  2. Liberace's Rotting Corpse: The fake name I used for a thread a while back, it sounds punk enough if that's the direction you're going.

  3. Sunrise: i like it, it could be good

  4. Sex Pistols: oops, already been used. Nevermind
