Hey, I'm new here so I have no clue if I'm starting a topic that has been covered-oh well, here goes. What is everyone's opinion of Talk Talk? I recently downloaded some of their stuff from Spirit of Eden and it is really good. Kind of the first 'post-rock' stuff, seems very inspirational. Yeah. So, Talk Talk, are they classic, or what?

I think 'Talk Talk' are an absolute classic band. 'Its My Life' is one of my favourite all time songs.
Im not sure what most of the other members of this board think about them. But I have a pretty solid collection of all their releases.
Are all of their releases still on vinyl? I think it would be ace to get a copy of Spirit of Eden on vinyl.
i think talk talk is one of the underated gem bands. often overlooked but very well deserving of credit where credits due. they inspired me to make music thats for sure
I have liked everything Ive heard by them. I think theyre overlooked sometimes. I want to get a 'best of' cd if they have one available. anyone know?

It's been released at least twice in the UK, and very good it is too. Try hmv.co.uk, they may have it.
......and they do. And a few others too.
I've got one called 12x12 I think. featured remixes and extended mixes of it's my life, today, talk talk amongst others. Sounds mostly a bit dated these days.
I've got a Talk Talk greatest hits, don't know how it's called. Sucha great band and the soundtrack of my youth. The club I used to go when I was a teenager would always open with "It's my life". Pure brilliance. I think I am going to fish it out tonight. 
The last 2 albums (Colour of Spring, Spirit of Eden) were in the ambient/post rock/whateverthefuckcategory and very good. In my opinion the most underrated of the 80's one hit wonders. Spirit of Eden is for sale on vinyl just down the street for 8bucks. Keep looking it's bound to be in that 50cent bin at a garage sale or flea market.

The 12" of "It's My Life" is a favorite of mine. It brings back great memories of clubbing.......
great band and great songs. recently I´ve been listening to spirit of eden and wow! the only problem is I can´t understand hollis´ pronounciation never could!

ooh, i agree! this is one of my favourite songs of all time, as well. 'life's what you make it' is another fantastic one. sounds a bit like roxy music, in my opinion. great band. 
Absolutely a great band. Love the A-Sides/B-Sides collection that finally came out a few years ago (but they should have included the 12" version of "Why Is It So Hard?" rather than the 7" version).
And for those of you that haven't, check out the live release "London 1986" that came out last year.
The later 'post-rock' releases are great - if you like that sound & you're a sucker for the torch-song sound of Portishead, check out the Rustin Man album... Beth gets together with Paul Webb (the Talk Talk bassist) and Adrian Utley is lurking alongside them...

seriously, we need to discuss more about the genius of talk talk. anyone heard the mark hollis solo album? good stuff.
Not heard the solo stuff. As regards Talk Talk's greatest hits compilations, would recommend "Asides Besides". Bought it about 2 years ago, should be still available. "Such A Shame" is the classic track for me.
i´m downloading all their discography right now. including hollis´ solo project. a month ago i bought a promotional vinyl made in argentina of "spirit of eden". what an excellent record! it´s the first clue to understand the sound of bristol of the 90s. i can´t wait to listen to "laughing stock". many people agree that is their best album. because they took the sound of "spirit of eden" one step forward.
that´s why i´m so excited to hear NewOrder´s Soundtrack. i´d love to listen to a full composition of our heros. not just the repetition of the same pattern again and again (elegia full version and video586). i think they could make a great piece of music. and it would certainly break the monotony of these years we´re living in. besides, barney once said he wanted to make avantgardist instrumental music. so it´s a perfect situation. they´re near 50, they don´t seem to enjoy that much playing the old tunes live even though they enjoy playing together, the disco years seem to be gone but they want to keep on making music. and something like this could give more seriousness, credibility and recognition to their careers (not that they need that).
i know many of the regular fans won´t agree with me. it´s ok. 6 years ago i said (on the ceremony mailing list) they needed to go back to guitars rock because electronic music was on a dead end and quite nobody agreed with me. but somehow it happened. maybe it would happen again, another twist. could be great or not. but it would be really interesting for sure.
Thanks to MTV in 1982 (when they were a music channel), I became a Talk Talk fan early on. They went from an almost completely electronic band to an acoustic one over their career but made great music throughout. They were also one of the best bands I've seen live. I saw them with the Psychedelic Furs in 1984... never had another chance. The nice thing is that a new fan can pretty much get everything they released on CD (b-sides included). I would recommend avoiding "History Revisited (remixes)" though. It tastes like burning... lame early nineties mixes that took all the soul out of the songs.
"It's My Life" and "Such A Shame" are true classics. Love this band, hate the first single "Talk Talk" though.
i've spent a couple days reading talk talk interviews circa' 1988-1991. really interesting to hear the process of recording spirit of eden and laughing stock.
have been looking for those two albums for quite a while now. i'll only buy the vinyl versions, for that true feel--as if i bought it when it was originally released. ;)
