Well, I had a nice long and drawn out explination and/or running joke thing going on about this year, but after I had to go check something I found that all i had typed before was gone, so fuck it, here's my lists of the entertainment I found here in this year we'll remember as the one where Kathy Lee Gifford got sick on a Disney cruise ship (fingers crossed that it can still happen)

Best Album -Seeing as both Robert Goulet and Pink Floyd chose not to release any new material this year, I've been forced to exclude them from the list. However, my list is as follows:

1. Doves, Last Broadcast
2. Elvis Costello, When I Was Cruel
3. 24 Hour Party People soundtrack
4. The Who, My Generation (reissue)
5. The Strokes, Is This It?
6. David Bowie, Heathen
7. "CBGB's And the Birth of US Punk"

10. New Order, Retro (whenever I get it finally)

Best Movie -I didn't get out too much this year, but I did see a few that were quite good.

4. A beautiful mind
5. O Brother Where Art Thou (I realize it's two years old, but I didn't see it til summer this year)

Best DVDs -This is based on what I bought, what I rented, and what I've got on order (the last two)

4. Monty Python Live
5. New Order Live At Finsbury
6. 24 Hour Party People

Best Book -the best two books I've read all year are "Robert Kennedy" by Evan Thomas and "Mike Nelson's Mind over Matters" by Michael J. Nelson

anyhoo, the best film i've seen so far this year has probably been 'far from heaven'. highly recommended.

The Strokes album came out last year as well.....

Elvis Costello's offering this year is simply phenomenal, his strongest work for some years. He's still amazing live as well :)

I bought the Strokes lp on the very last day of 2001, and really didn't get to listen to it until January 1st. thus, my reasoning for its inclusion on the list.

As for EC, I gotta say the new lp is reason to celebrate. Where as most veteran acts are content to release "best of's" with a shoddy new tune or two attached, Elvis actually went and recorded a classic LP of new songs that sound like his best stuff. I had to put it near the top if only for "Tear Off Your Own Head" or "45"

I'm just pissed cause they reissued the Strokes album this year with a DVD that had some videos and live stuff on it, which means that I either need to buy the album again (ALREADY; TWICE IN ONE YEAR???What the **** is that about!), or ask for it as a Christmas gift. Same thing with the White Stripes album. Damn idiotic record companies.....

My lists will be forthcoming, and I'm sure that Neko Case and the Mekons will figure in there. Glad to see that the new EC is great, currently I'm enjoying the terrific reissue of Armed Forces.

I feel the same way about all the EC reissues as you do the Strokes and White Stripes. Looking at the three albums I already had (Armed Forces, This Year's Model, and My Aim Is True) all I see is a lot of rehashes of the mid-90s Ryko reissues with a few more songs tacked on to another cd seperate from the album proper, which is good because you can listen to the original album as it was intended, but I see no reason to go and get My Aim again at this point. I did pick up the double-disc edition of Blood and Chocolate, that's a must-have if you're an EC fan.

Blood and Chocolate will be next then, thanks for the tip. Don't know if you saw the post I'd made about Armed Forces on another thread, but the reason I bought this is cause I didn't buy the Ryko disc. Once I saw that it was coming out again, I knew for sure that some people would be a bit upset.

At least Elvis's companies had the good sense to space out the timing of their reissues by a couple of years

I wonder when they'll finally get around to three-disc editions: Armed Forces! Disc One= tho original lp! Disc 2= unreleased tracks and b-sides! Disc 3=Elvis taking a shit! (oh, wait, wrong Elvis!)

Blood And Choclate is definitely EC at his most bitter (I think he had just ended his first marriage) very excellent and a good companion to When I Was Cruel.

spotnick, you're spot on about what you said about the Tennenbaums.. that movie is *quite* overrated, the soundtrack was really nice though with the inclusion of elliott smith and nico etc.

I saw the "Tennenbams" as JD Salinger's famous Glass family brought to the screen (overachieving kids who grow up to be unexceptional adults), and I just love everything Wes Anderson has directed. Bill Murray was underused (given his Oscar-worthy turn in Rushmore), but apart from that I have no complaints about it, so there :finger:

But stuff I've recently decided I like would be BT (the trance dude), Doves, and The Streets. Recent book would be a biography of Alexander the Great (Great? Alexander the blood crazed psycho, more like).

Stuff I've recently decided I dislike would be Ryan Adams and all things Americana (far too self-consciously 'authentic' and 'rootsy', and dull as ditchwater too boot), plus all recent bands attempting to make using the word 'the' in your name fashionable again that aren't The Streets ('The Hives', 'The Vines'. 'The Datsuns', 'The Strokes' etc).
