'Friday I'm in Love.'

Every Cure fan hates this song, why? I think its so good, I mean its cheesy, but aren't we forgetting this band wore lipstick? so, is it really that corny? Discuss. 'Because, Friday, I'm in Love.'

I remember Robert Smith saying he wouldnt play it live because he hated it so much, is that still true? Well, recently at least. I was told the cure was done with, but I guess releasing best of records and re-recording old ones isnt technically 'retired' but who am I to say?

It kinda reminds me of Blue Monday. The song is probably their most widely recognized/popular song but people in the group don't really like it...

My sister likes it. I got her hooked with the greatest hits video. I think it's okay. I like Wrong Number better.

It's the classic "this is the band's biggest song but we hate it" scenario that accompanies any discussion of Blue Monday. By virtue of its popularity, "Friday" is scorned by "hardcore" fans and that can be a shame. "Friday" is a definite high point and not as embarrasing as "Love Cats" (which, while I admit to liking a bit, is still the worst thing the Cure ever committed to record). I love it.....

I heard a rumor that Cure was working with a producer who did shite like Alien Ant Farm, any truth to that?

i wouldn't say that i ever hated this song, i was just never really that fond of it. it came out just as i was cooling off of the cure and i couldn't really get into that period of theirs. i prefer it to 'lovesong', however. i am enjoying it a lot more in retrospect, though.

how can you not like 'lovesong'?? what with such a great video. i'd love to see the treatment for that one. scene begins with robert smith in cave. robert, wearing shit loads of makeup and with bad hair, is visibly sad. thats one of the first videos i remember seriously disliking in my youth..

I never really cared for this song. It's weird too, I know Mr. Smith personally hates "Let's Go To Bed" and always says something bad about it before they play it live, but I think it's an awesome tune.

The Cure - like Depeche Mode - have churned out as much good stuff as shite stuff. "Friday Im In Love", unfortunately falls into this latter categorry, simply because it's Robert Smith trying to recapture the glorious pop stuff long behind him (viz - Just Like Heaven, Catch, Close To me, InBetween days). The tune is just so banal and the lyrics are trite. I hate it. My girlfriend at the time bought the album it came from "Wish" and I took one listen to it thought the band must be taking the piss.

My favourite Cure record will always be "17 seconds". Because a "Forest" , "In Your House" and "Play For Today" are on it. It's funny to relate that i was only 5 years old when this came out - i finally got it whilst at sixth form college in Lancaster about 12 years ago, when I first saw them on their Disintergration tour.

The only choons I like by The Curry (from Finsberry anyone) are A Forest, Dreams Never End ;), Let's Go To Bed and Love Cats. And I'm right.

You've got the best of each period up to '87: Pop, Goth, Electronic, Pop again....

"Friday I'm In Love" is one of the worst songs they've ever written. it totally ruins the "wish"-album which would be a total classic without it. don't get me wrong, i'm not against the poppier side of The Cure, but they've done much better songs in this category, like "the 13th", "gone" or even "just say yes".

Err Gone is dreadful in my opinion and the 13th is not much better.

Friday Im In Love I think is a great pop tune. And digging up pop glory from long behind him? I dont think the cure had lost anything in 1992.

'To Wish Impossible Things' a totally perfect cure song from wish though, come to think of it.

i think Disintegration is an incredible album; much more solid as a single LP than Staring At The Sea. i actually think it's better than any New Order LP, but that's just my opinion (although i don't think it's as good as either Joy Division album).

those three songs you mention would probably be my three least liked singles. Awful tuneless cutesy teddy bear shambling. FIIL on the other hand is a lovely little exhuberant number.

This was a bit of a 'comeback' single if i remember, the video was tragically awful, taking down a set with them dancing in front of it... oh dear!

I find the extended version of the single much better.I also like this song payed live.

Me too; I remember grooving round my room to it when I was about 11 or 12. I had it on one of those Now tapes (jeez, remember those? Who'd be caught dead buying them now, though?).

Just to weigh in with my opinion a full month after this thread was started, I like this song. But I can't speak from the point of view of a Cure fanatic, though I enjoy a fair bit of their work.

By the way, do they spend as much time discussing New Order on Cure forums as we do discussing the Cure??
