I'm just wondering...kept hearing about Stella...and finally got my hands on some in London this summer...and it was good!!!!

used to drink something called John Courage...and it was good, but I can't find it here anymore...

then for Christmas...I decided to try Harp...and it was pretty damn good as well...

then today, it's Bass...and it's tasting much better than the usual swill I drink from the states...

so just what gives???

why are those of us in the states willing to drink such awful shit???

any ideas???

Well, Jeff, I think you've answered your own question: imports.

Bass is great. My cuz, who is somewhat of a connoisseur of import beers, got me hooked on it. The first thing I noticed when I started drinking imports was that american beers just taste watered down by comparison. Imports just have more kick. hmmm....I thought WE were supposed to be the uptight, workaholics?? Shouldnt we be making beer that knocks you flat on your ass??

after living in the UK for six years i can't drink american beer (except for microbrews). most american beer is watered down piss with no taste, and frat boys seem to like it that way. give me a nice, thick ale with a big, white head any day (pardon the double entendre).

the worst was when i was sitting in my local in scotland when two americans walked in and ordered ales. after being served and taking their seats, they sipped their drinks and replied 'these are warm!' at which time they berated the bar keep for not refrigerating the beer properly. she replied, 'but sir, ale is meant to be room temperature.' the entire bar laughed at the two men, and they sheepishly returned to their seats. morons!

Hey, as long as it gets you drunk I don't care (though Coors Light is a bit shitty compared to other stuff I've had)

Well, I confess I like mine cold. A nice cold import.

I'm eurocentric enough to drink imports but American enough to drink them cold. Actually some of the smaller breweries in the US that brew in more traditional styles are great, it's just the 'dirty water' vendors that give us a bad name. It wasn't always that way, Cincinnati used to be a brewing capital known for high quality, high alcohol German style beer in the 1800s. I don't drink Bass due to the gelatin finings they use in the brewing process (non vegetarian), but I love Guinness. Also Chimay, Woodstock IPA, and any good Hefeweizen.

USA have lower standards in terms of quality for brewing, don't ask me why, but Budweiser tastes different in US than in Canada, it's much better here.

Of course, in Canada, all is lead by Molson or Labatt, then the "others" are showing up, such as Sleeman, and you have TONS of microbrewries that do excellent beers..

But still, I can enjoy a Molson Dry, it's not bad at all, but it's a beer you take to get drunk, not because it's a taste you can't live without :thumb:

Personally, I like trying new beers, I have a little bottle collections, but I must say the beer I prefer to drink right now is the Heineken, although it's brewed by Molson over here ;)

is because american beers are made with rice? like the japanese ones? I heard that somewhere but never been able to prove it.

nope. most definitely not made with rice. hops and barley, like in europe, i believe...and lots and lots of water. :(

Really?!!?

That makes we wonder how crap US bud tastes cause the stuff we have is terrible. I tend to stay as far away from American beer as possible. I made an exception once when the likes of Bud were going for 2.50$CDN a bottle but never again.

Well if i remember....The U.S.A outlawed alcohol for a time and never recovered from it, where as we built a nation on drinking and pillaging...lol.

Actually, the ale is served at room temp because it's kept in Lucas (Prince of Darkness) refrigerators. :) If you've ever owned an old British sportscar, you know what I mean.

Funny, but not as amusing as one time in the best real ale pub in town - I presume you're talking about the second best - an American girl (student, I think) lifted her pint of real ale from beside the hand pump when half of it was still head. "Do you not want me to finish pulling that?" said the barman.

I tried not to laugh too much.

can this be done???

another note...went out shooting pool with my roomie tonight...of course...the only import they had was Guiness...still not too keen on that stuff...tastes like road tar in my opinion...so I order a Bud, since that was on special...and it tasted like WATER...dear God, what am I to do??? Hope that the local stores keep Bass and Harp on sale for a low price???

That wouldn't be such a bad thing...now would it???

Why is Budweiser like making love in a canoe ?

Because they're both fucking close to water :D

The thought of it frightens me......

I haven't really had much imported beer in order to be able to judge between US and overseas beer. Heineken is the about as exotic as I've gotten, and I didn't really like it much (it was the very first beer I ever had, so I might be able to like it now that I've developed a taste for beer).

Hmm, all this talk of beer makes me a little thirsty  (too bad the Bible-thumpers had to ban alcohol sales on Sunday! There's a special place in hell reserved for those bastards, right next to TV executives)

no beer on Sunday?!?!?! and I thought we had it bad in Texas since the liquor stores are closed on Sunday...mind you, we do have to wait until noon to purchase a beverage...

The province of Quebec has the right idea. Make beer avaliable at the corner store and at supermarkets. The rest of Canada could learn something from this.

Whats this all about can't you buy it in these places in the rest of Canada? In the UK if we could't get our Beer at the corner shop and supermarkets there would be riots.

Not all US beer is crap there are some very good ones but they are quite hard to find in the UK as we are dominated by Bud, Fosters, carling and shit like that. I get my beers over the internet Duvel, Hoegaarden, Chimay etc from Belgium and US ones include Brooklyn lager, Goose Island IPA, Michelob (when it's imported), Dixie, Abita.

I prefer cough syrup with lots of DXM

Seriously, watered down frat beer makes me wanna vomit *insert overused vomit emoticon here*

For great beer, I have to go w/ Labatt, Molson, Sam Adams, Corona and Heineken.

In several parts of Europe.. you can get beer at McDonald's...

I didn't know we were so different.. beer is available everywhere, the liquor stores are only for real stuff like Tequila and Vodka

But they opened somehting, now you can get a very wide variety of beer at the grocery store, which was not the case before..

But, you can't buy alcohol between 11 PM and 7 PM (unless you go to a bar, which has to stop at 3 AM), and on election day

Stupid law... if you actually buy the beer 2 weeks before and drink it at 11hPM, you're alright, but if you are partying and need more beer, you can't go and get some...

How many times did we find that law stupid in our young days :D

They used to sell RootBeer in the UK anyone remember that? not actually real bear just some bizzare medicine tasting liquid.

I seem to recall it was banned over here or something, or am i talking total bollox!?? ;)

I'm talking about in McDonalds by the way!

I remember Root Beer in Mcdonalds - it tasted like germeline smells. You can still get it I got some in Tescos the other day - it's just as bad now as it was then.

root beer is the nectar of the gods.

if anyone thinks american beer is bad, you've never tasted israeli beer. maccabi and goldstar are the two big brands (we always drank goldstar because living next to the ha'poel tel aviv football ground, drinking a beer with the same name as their big rivals just didn't seem right) and you finally get used to them after a few painful weeks. you never, EVER get used to israeli wine, however.

 I fucking detest Budweiser, it is mingin. The only time I have ever drunk it, is when I'm already absolutely smashed, and I can't taste it. I braved a cold bottle from the fridge a coupleof weeks ago, and wondered why I had to put myself through the pain again:lol: You can't go wrong with Stella or Carlsberg. Although currently round the flat we've been sinking a few Castlemaine XXXX, I kid you not! I remember years ago, the stuff was fookin orrible, but since it's been put in Green & Yellow cans they seem to taste a lot better;)

My and my housemate once brewed our own beer. I now beleive i am sterile.

I know nothing about beer, it all tastes the same to me. But I do know (a) it tastes better chilled, sorry if thats unpatriotic of me, and (b) the only beer I've ever tasted that was actually downright nasty was Canadian.

More important question. Do American women suck ? :p

Yes. Any American beer, no matter how foul or pissy it might taste if it is warm, tastes nice and crisp when it is cold:

When I cannot afford Sam Adams ( @ 9.00 USD per six pack ), Moerlein O.T.R. (Over-The-Rhine), or any of the good stouts (Murphy's Beamish, or Guinness, and in that order ),

I drink PBR, Blatz, or Bürger (not necessarily in that order of preference), and ice cold, mind you...F**k Budweiser, so boring and ubiquitous...

teleharmonium wrote: I'm eurocentric enough to drink imports but American enough to drink them cold.

Same here. It's just not my habit to go out of my way to drink any beer warm. Maybe that's just an 'American' thing.

I'm guessing that Euro-beers are served at room temp simply because they can be, i.e. they are tasty that way.

teleharmonium wrote: It wasn't always that way, Cincinnati used to be a brewing capital known for high quality, high alcohol German style beer in the 1800s.

Cincy will rise again...if you haven't tried it yet, just try Moerlein O.T.R. ...It's quite the tasty brew...

Besides, we have the Hofbrauhaus in Newport...Dunkel and House Lager served straight from the bright tanks... so fresh, it's practically still wort (but a very strong wort)!!!

teleharmonium wrote:

But doesn't Guinness also use finings, i.e. isinglass, made from fish? I guess some vegetarians are okay with fish (which are about as expressive as vegetables, maybe that's why, lol, no distraction by the cute factor J/K )

The house dunkel at Hofbrauhaus is flavored with banana and clove...I've tried it in bottles (fairly decent), but have yet to try it fresh from the store (i.e. out of the tanks)

You should clarify better Jeff:

AMERICAN BEERS ARE EXCELLENT, its AMERICAN PILSNERS that suck.

My favorite beer is pale ale, and Bass is my favorite that you can find about anywhere, but there are a few pale ales made by microbrew that are better than Bass (though Bass has an amazing consistency, no matter where you drink it and when its always the same).

And for the record ITS NOT SO MUCH THE WATER in American Pilsners, its the lack of hops that they use... and the clearer the beer, the more the rice (like molson, heiniken, coors light, etc.)

But American pilsners have their place, you can't drink an English Ale on a really hot summer day to quench yer thirst.

bud, miller, and coor's i understand your point. however american beer does not stop here.

first off your from texas. have you ever tried shiner bock, from shiner texas. they have a sampler 6 pack which has 6 kinds. sam adams is also very good. we have 3 micro breweries near my house. what about rogue?

saying american beer's suck is just to broad of a statement.

Shiner is highly overrated...their Black Bohemian Lager is the only thing in their line up that appeals to me at all...Real Ale Brewing Company out of Blanco pisses all over Spoetzl...

North Shore Brewing Company out of Cali does some good stuff...especially this:

Well if you like stouts, no wonder you don't like pilsners. Its like complaining that a hot dog simply isn't as good as a hamburger (and thinking they are the same thing).

One that is EXCELLENT, and I only fell on it by accident in a store (just one bottle loose, and the store didn't sell loose bottles), the store never sold it before and never after... snuck it ina six pack... wish I could have more:

Then the staple beer in Oregon (where drinking pilsners is a crime):

and though this is an amber, this was an excellent one for a summer day, out of Louisiana, at least closer to you.

Have to agree with Edel here. Some of the best beer I have ever tasted was made in tiny microbreweries in California. Tended to get better the further north you travelled, in my experience. Best one was on a terrace at a restaurant overlooking a river in the Napa Valley. Bliss.

I also love the way that American waitresses look at you like you're Oliver Reed if you order more than one or two.

you needn't drink the swill, texani. there're plenty of good imports here in the US of A. still, there are some GRRREAT american microbrews, as mentioned above. one of note is the wynkoop in denver. chocolate-flavoured beer! tastes excellent, actually. they have great beer soup, as well. and the owner (who's also mayor of denver) is named john hickenlooper. my family used to eat at the wynkoop all the time when we lived back in the mile high city.
