I'm just wondering...kept hearing about Stella...and finally got my hands on some in London this summer...and it was good!!!!

used to drink something called John Courage...and it was good, but I can't find it here anymore...

then for Christmas...I decided to try Harp...and it was pretty damn good as well...

then today, it's Bass...and it's tasting much better than the usual swill I drink from the states...

so just what gives???

why are those of us in the states willing to drink such awful shit???

any ideas???

Bass is great. My cuz, who is somewhat of a connoisseur of import beers, got me hooked on it. The first thing I noticed when I started drinking imports was that american beers just taste watered down by comparison. Imports just have more kick. hmmm....I thought WE were supposed to be the uptight, workaholics?? Shouldnt we be making beer that knocks you flat on your ass??

after living in the UK for six years i can't drink american beer (except for microbrews). most american beer is watered down piss with no taste, and frat boys seem to like it that way. give me a nice, thick ale with a big, white head any day (pardon the double entendre).

the worst was when i was sitting in my local in scotland when two americans walked in and ordered ales. after being served and taking their seats, they sipped their drinks and replied 'these are warm!' at which time they berated the bar keep for not refrigerating the beer properly. she replied, 'but sir, ale is meant to be room temperature.' the entire bar laughed at the two men, and they sheepishly returned to their seats. morons!

Well, I confess I like mine cold. A nice cold import.

I'm eurocentric enough to drink imports but American enough to drink them cold. Actually some of the smaller breweries in the US that brew in more traditional styles are great, it's just the 'dirty water' vendors that give us a bad name. It wasn't always that way, Cincinnati used to be a brewing capital known for high quality, high alcohol German style beer in the 1800s. I don't drink Bass due to the gelatin finings they use in the brewing process (non vegetarian), but I love Guinness. Also Chimay, Woodstock IPA, and any good Hefeweizen.

USA have lower standards in terms of quality for brewing, don't ask me why, but Budweiser tastes different in US than in Canada, it's much better here.

Of course, in Canada, all is lead by Molson or Labatt, then the "others" are showing up, such as Sleeman, and you have TONS of microbrewries that do excellent beers..

But still, I can enjoy a Molson Dry, it's not bad at all, but it's a beer you take to get drunk, not because it's a taste you can't live without

Personally, I like trying new beers, I have a little bottle collections, but I must say the beer I prefer to drink right now is the Heineken, although it's brewed by Molson over here ;)

nope. most definitely not made with rice. hops and barley, like in europe, i believe...and lots and lots of water. :(

That makes we wonder how crap US bud tastes cause the stuff we have is terrible. I tend to stay as far away from American beer as possible. I made an exception once when the likes of Bud were going for 2.50$CDN a bottle but never again.

Actually, the ale is served at room temp because it's kept in Lucas (Prince of Darkness) refrigerators. :) If you've ever owned an old British sportscar, you know what I mean.

Funny, but not as amusing as one time in the best real ale pub in town - I presume you're talking about the second best - an American girl (student, I think) lifted her pint of real ale from beside the hand pump when half of it was still head. "Do you not want me to finish pulling that?" said the barman.

I tried not to laugh too much. :laugh:

another note...went out shooting pool with my roomie tonight...of course...the only import they had was Guiness...still not too keen on that stuff...tastes like road tar in my opinion...so I order a Bud, since that was on special...and it tasted like WATER...dear God, what am I to do??? Hope that the local stores keep Bass and Harp on sale for a low price???

That wouldn't be such a bad thing...now would it???

I haven't really had much imported beer in order to be able to judge between US and overseas beer. Heineken is the about as exotic as I've gotten, and I didn't really like it much (it was the very first beer I ever had, so I might be able to like it now that I've developed a taste for beer).

no beer on Sunday?!?!?! and I thought we had it bad in Texas since the liquor stores are closed on Sunday...mind you, we do have to wait until noon to purchase a beverage...

The province of Quebec has the right idea. Make beer avaliable at the corner store and at supermarkets. The rest of Canada could learn something from this.

Whats this all about can't you buy it in these places in the rest of Canada? In the UK if we could't get our Beer at the corner shop and supermarkets there would be riots.

Not all US beer is crap there are some very good ones but they are quite hard to find in the UK as we are dominated by Bud, Fosters, carling and shit like that. I get my beers over the internet Duvel, Hoegaarden, Chimay etc from Belgium and US ones include Brooklyn lager, Goose Island IPA, Michelob (when it's imported), Dixie, Abita.
