Interpol

I'm not sure how many people know about the NYC band Interpol, and i apologize in advance if this topic has been discussed here previously, but i recently heard them on the radio, and i must say that i am very impressed by them. Turn on the Bright Lights is one of the most refreshing albums i have heard in a long time, and im not simply saying this because it bares comparisons to joy division, im saying this because it is great music, and i think if you havent heard interpol yet, they are worth a listen. Get a hold of the songs "Say hello to the angels," "NYC," "PDA," "Obstacle 2" to see what im talking about, i think their quality is self explanatory.

yeah, i like them too. i think Grell is sporting an interpol avator...

bzzzzt...yikes, ppl have discovered my avatar is of interpol. oh well, despite all the hype, they are quite a good band. 'bright lights' stands up to repeated listenings, even though the singer sounds like Ian Curtis/guy from Tragically Hip--take your pick. but lately i haven't touched the album mostly because i'm listening to more jazzy stuff(b/c of school) and mission of burma. ramble ramble.

There has been alot of mention of this band lately - I'm now tempted to investigate their records.

How many have they brought out so far?

They have one full length album out "Turn on the Bright Lights." Made in 2002. Except for the cd single of Obstacle i think thats all you will find by them, but they are gonna be on David Letterman tomorrow night, so if you are around, maybe you can check it out =)

and it was a slightly uninspiring performance.

i wouldnt call it uninspiring, i think they were nervous as hell, first major tv debut

I love their album so much that I borrowed it from a friend, as I intented to burn a CD-R of it, but it's so damn good that I'm going to buy it anyway! THEY DESERVE THEIR ROYALTIES!!!!!!!!!!!

david, yeh. i agree, i've heard they're pretty great live but that particular performance wasn't, chock it up to nerves, like you said..

did you also notice the applause from the audience was really weak? they must not have dug 'em.

and i thought that was a picture of you playing live! as for interpol, i have never heard or seen them and they are from my hometown, is that a shame or what?

i downloaded the album after seeing them on letterman and remembering talk from here. the singer does sound kinda like me :D, but the music doesn't. in fact one song reminded me of the smiths (i'll be damned if i can remember which one. . . ). all in all i like the album. and probably wouldn't have given a crap if it weren't for the idle chatter here.

their letterman performance wasn't spectacular, but at least they didn't fuck up their song. and i'm a little upset they cut off the ending to PDA.

i didn't first hear it this way, but, during 'say hello to the angels' doesn't the chorus sound like ...'moving to your assface?'

I'll be in a minority, but I think their total wank.

Total derivitive moody bollocks. They remind me of bad 80s goth bands who tried to imitate the likes of Sisters of Mercy and Bauhaus. The lyrics are so pretentious they have to be seen to be heard. They take the Joy Division blueprint and add absolutely nothing of their own to it.

I picked this up yesterday after all the hype and I gotta say: They live up to it, pretty much.

I gotta say, the overall sound reminds me more of late-70s Bowie (or even his most recent release, heathen) than JD, but I can see the comparisons.

Trying to get tickets for their gig at the Astoria on the 22nd March. Wish me luck...

i think they are here in nyc im march , i will give them a chance, i must admit i heard a few songs and i didnt really think they were great, im not saying they were terrible but i dont see where all this hype is coming from

I sell more Interpol at my job than I do any other band. I haven't heard them yet. I've asked several people how close the JD comparison is, but most of the people I've asked don't know who JD is! They buy that album, and if they buy more it's a few emo bands who sound weaker than the Railway Children! Well, actually, the Railway Children would bury these bands! I'm not really into rehashings. I think things have moved forward in great detail, yet nobody has noticed it. The Last Frontier?
