anyone seen this yet?

its a bona fide classic - best film of the year no question. saw it last night - violence, sex, humour, pathos, brilliant.

Its funny to know you liked it, Hibster. The movie divided people here in Brazil, I am one of those that didn't like it that much.

The movie talks about some REAL problems we have here in Brazil, which should not be discussed in a "pop" format, if you know what I mean.

But, besides political/social matters, I must agree that as an entertainment, it rocks!!

goodfellas also based on fact as was schindlers list & saving private ryan & amistad etc etc, all these are about harrowing events, but all released as entertainment

admittedly i knew nothing of the events in the film & so could see it with a far more detached pov

You are absolutely right. The problem was that the film was "sold" for brazilian audiences as a "serious" film, instead of entertainment, if you know what I mean.

It is also produced by the biggest TV Company in Latin America (World's 3rd), and it is not so independent/alternative as they are saying.

But as I said before, it is a cool movie indeed, and I'm glad you folks from UK liked it.

Hibster, if it interests you, try the book. I really don't know if there's an english version of it, but it is possible. Friends of mine who have read it say it is A LOT better than the movie... and even more raw and violent.

This is a bone fide masterpiece - but not as good as the Mexican Ammores Perros which is similar in style and substance pick it up on DVD if you can people.

Hiblet, is this movie available to view on the DVD format from a local BlockMover or Globalised Video Shifter? - You've whet my appetite. I'm quite keen on settling on a good film but they've been thin on the ground of late.

I enjoyed K-Pax the other week but was let down by Insomnia starring Al Potato and Robert Williams Mork.

Any reccs. would go down a storm presently as I'm about to view the latest releases to decide from.

I don't think I can stomach Comic Repeat tonight - them guys are best left on Blackpool pier.

city of god was in the cinemas in january so must be due soon - but doubt it'll reach bliockbuster being foreign language & everything.

insomnia was a perfect cure for insomnia - what a let down after memento!

I would really like to see this film this weekend. The only thing that is drawing me away from it is the comparisons to Quentin Tarantino. I don't like any of his films. How similar are they?

not very - there isnt the same snappy dialogue packed scene after scene structure - more of a story - though there is a little flashback, touch of the john woo still photos etc

Even though I think the movie will be released in US and UK, as soon as it gets on DVD here in Brazil, I can make a VHS copy for those of interest... of course I'll only do it if there are English subtitles available, or do you guys understand any portuguese?

Saw it last night, it played to a surprisingly large audience in my very provincial local cinema. About 20 times more people than I saw 24hr party people with in Liverpool city centre. I'd advise anyone put off by the thought of watching subtitles that it was surprisingly easy to follow. Regarding the Tarrantino issue, I'd say it was the film’s structure pivoting around different perspectives that drew the comparison. Perhaps some of 70’s stylised flava has similarities, Given that much of the cast were drawn largely from the favellas; I don't think the dialogue (even if you can understand it) could be any further removed from Tarantino's ultra slick style. That's not a criticism by the way. The films structure though one of its strengths didn't leave much time for in depth character development and instead gives a fairly short sharp punchy delivery. I was left wondering more about their motivation and there are answers there, perhaps the fact that it doesn't answer all your questions is something you could take either way.
