Yesterday I went to see "Gangs of New York" (it opened later in Spain than in America). I do not know whether you remember the final scenes when you can see the evolution of Manhattan's skyline from the place where Priest Vallon and Bill Cutting lay buried side by side. I certainly felt a pain in my stomach when I saw the twin towers there. I thought it would not have been included in the final cut. Well, it was and quite appropriately so. Pain will always be with us. It's part and parcel of what we call life. But the thing that makes as human is hope, what makes the life worth living is the certainty that we'll always start again. We need the towers to be high. As high as possible, higher than before as an homage to those who were ruthlessly killed but also as a reminder to ourselves that we shall never surrender.

well...no. they certainly don't need to represent pain! i think hope and regeneration would be more fitting! i, for one, have a hard enough time thinking of my friends who died on september 11 and what they possibly went through, and the last thingfamily, friends, survivors and new yorkers need is a painful reminder of that day! and i'm sure those we lost would agree with me. imagine if the architects who rebuilt dresden and hiroshima had been so morose! how psychologically destructive would that have been for the survivors and the generations that followed?[
When my great great grandchildren come to visit New York in say another 30 years,i would like them to see and feel the pain that was caused to so many innocent people. By seeing one of those two towers standing there they will have no true understanding of what happened on 911. Whats wrong with the TRUTH?....
ok, here's my perspective: i know someone who lost her fiance in the lockerbie disaster, and i know people who were killed in new york and jerusalem in terrorist attacks. i've also witnessed a terrorist attack in madrid and i was stuck in a battle between the israeli army and hizbollah in the golan heights--a katyusha rocket landed 200 feet from our car at one point (it seems like i'm a magnet, or something). the truth is, there's no way in hell you would ever want your grandchildren (or anyone else for that matter) to 'see or feel' that kind of pain or fear. trust me.
the only 'true understanding' possible comes through education, as i certainly hope you or anyone you know never experiences the other kind of 'true understanding', which is personal experience. plus, as a former resident of manhattan i want to see the skyline again. maybe you yearn for pain, but some of us, who were directly affected, just want to heal. the world didn't stop september 11, 2001, just like it didn't stop december 7, 1941, or august 6, 1945, and it won't (hopefully) on any other day that mankind decides to show his disregard for his own race. in the case of the WTC, by succumbing to pain, the terrorists win--plain and simple.

It seems a bit off to expect them to priorotise occasional/possible visitors ahead of the actual residents.
