I'm bored tonight, so I'm starting a thread on... MONEY!

Show us what the money is in your country and what it is worth (compared to a US$ or Euro)

I don't think all European countries replaced their money yet, did they?

So, mine is, almighty Canada..

This is our 1$ coin (no longer available in bill), it represents a common loon (hence why this coin is called a LOONEY), which is a kind of duck we're seeing a lot here.

Our 2$ coin (no longer in bill either), it's a polar bear...

In case you're not bored enough...

25 cents.. a moose!

10 cents, the Blue Nose (a ship that never lost a race)

5 cents.. ah the canadian BEAVER!

What else than a maple leaf for the most common coin, 1 cent!

Now, what is it worth? 0.67$ US, on a high since our economy is better than the US one, but it has seen much better days.

In case you wonder what's on the other side.. refer to UK coins, it's the same.. Queen Elizabeth II.

Now since I'm curious, go ahead with yours, I haven't seen much (except the US of course) lately...

I love the polar bear!

The Dutch euros aren't worth showing as they've all got queen B's head on it. The Portugese and Irish coins are nice, but the Greek have the best 1Eur coin, it's a lovely owl.

As for worth, I'm always broke, so every coin is worth a lot to me.

For the record, let me inform you that the portuguese euros have a reproduction of Dom Afonso Henrique's royal seal. He was our first king back in the XIIth century, so he's a bit of a legend around here... He was french, by the way!

We've been getting Canadian currency down here for years. It's PRETTY!!!!! No dead white guys!!!! I like the animals and the boat. I got some neat Canadian coins when I was in Canada a couple of years ago...a Nunavut commemorative, the millenium commemoratives...all REALLY pretty.

The only thing we have that's neat are the state quarters - Illinois just came out. I love our Ohio quarter - it has the Wright flyer and an astronaut. There was a big fuss when the quarters were being designed because North Carolina thought it should have "Birthplace of Aviation" instead of Ohio, JUST because the Wrights flew the plane at Kitty Hawk. IDIOTS! Our quarter can be seen at this site

I wish the US would go back to having pix of Liberty, the flag, and eagles on the obverse of our coins like they were in the 1800s. They were SO beautiful.

Yes, Anita, the Ohio quarter is one of the better ones, I love the astronaut on it. About the only one that doesn't look right is the Connecticut quarter, with whatever the hell kind of tree taking up most of the space. I was, however, looking for a flaming river on the Ohio piece, but couldn't find it! (Just kidding ;) )

God knows what's gonna be on the Oregon quarter: spotted owls, salmon, Lewis And Clark, marijuana leaves, or some methamphetamines.

ahhhh, yes...the flaming river - really Lake Erie. But it's all cleaned up in Cleveland now.

I'm not sure about the tree on the Connecticut quarter, either. It's a mystery like that rock on the New Hampshire coin.

I thought maybe they'd have something like what you suggested, or maybe something with a Starbucks on it. Or is that Washington? ;)

Each participating country has its own design. One side is unique, the other is the same everywhere. I've seen them all now because my wee boy has collected them (or I should say: I have collected them for him).

The nice thing (if you care) of coins is that they have multiple surfaces: front, back and side. All euro coins have the value depicted on the front and it's the same in all countries. Each country has its own back side of the coin. In the netherlands they also put a text on the side of the 2 euro coin. Maybe you can guess what the text is?

The Brazilian currency is called "real" and it was introduced in 1994 after an economical plan (the Real Plan, naturally) with a 1-to-1 rate with the dollar, but not fixed as Argentina did.

Nine years on, 1 dollar is worth 3.5 "reais". You can imagine how f**ed we are nowadays. :(

My problem is that our currency was a lot prettier before someone decided that presidents belong on the obverse. Have you ever seen our old currency? It was PRETTY. The Morgan and Peace dollars were beautiful. The coins and paper money had Liberty standing, sitting, or walking and holding an American flag. The artwork was beautiful and imaginative. There is nothing imaginative about a pic of a president.
