Liverpool have been awarded the european city of culture 2008.

Sergio Tachini have immediately announced a special commemorative shell suit to mark the occasion.

Word on the lanes of Bristol is that none of the cider swilling, country bumkins actually realised they were in the running.:p

The latest rumour is that Fila have come in with a last minute bid to scupper Sergio.

Lacoste™ aren't said to be worried that any rivals will usurp their position as market leaders.

Did some official body obtain a time machine to visit these places in 2008 in order to asses which was the better place to consume marmalade?

What a load of old capston.

Why does Boro never win? - we've got about 30 pastie shops in the town centre now ... beat that!

:hat:

cornish pasties?

Yeah baby, you name it.

Cornish (although not a delicacy here) Vegetable Beef (cannot condone) General Meathane (not advisable)

and numerous cakes ranging from chocolate eclairs to small cup cakes.

What else does Boro have to do.

that last sentance could be read two ways huntsy

  1. what else is there to do in boro other than consume pasties

or

  1. what else does boro have to do to win city of culture

which camp are you in?

Mmm.

Your surely not offering enough choices their sir. After all, the town of Middlesbrough (the biggest town in the UK) is a cataclysmic metropolis of both culture and wildlife.

For instance, you could yes, obtain and enjoy a pastie (hot) for about 72pence (I know, a bit steep), but within 3 mins. - you could be well on your way to the country side, where you can proceed to thrill in the fresh air and be almost where they film Heartbeat.

If I was to enter Boro I would probably write something like this to inspire them and win the day:

Come to Boro, its not too bad. Plenty of choice with the shops and that and a couple of cinemas (technically 1), loads of people who seemed to have come from abroad to settle at the top end and a whole load of history with boats and stuff like that.

In the 60's there was steel industry and then in the 90's with the advent of computers they put a bus station up with read outs of the timetables on LCD screens.

Other than that I believe that Borogirls.com is an active place to obtain ladies services for an hour or so and with any luck sparrows will migrate in late Spring (to be confirmed).

Can we win? - what do win? - we've got everything.

:hat:

PS we've got a decent train station with 2 tracks.

1 for each set of wheels eh?

No, I was attempting to assume a yokel dialect.

Huntsy, I think you've come unto a winner, yours should be BORO's new Motto. After all the present one "ERIMUS" is not too appropriate, is it?

For the benefit of those of you not fully conversant with Early Latin as spoken to this day in certain parts of Hispanic America and backward regions of Spain and Portugal ERIMUS means "We will be" which is nice because it leaves things neatly open and subject to interpretation. "We will be" yeah but what..

According to my only Boro supporter frien, David, the real Motto of the club, if not the whole city, should be "Bloody typical" which fully expresses the feeling of disillusionment felt by Boro followers after Boro once again succeeds in keeping their spotless record of more than a century without winning a single Trophy.

However no city will ever surpass the magnificent slogan conjured up by the much lamented "Marketing Manchester" quango: "Manchester: We're up and going" (only slightly better than Plan B: "Manchester: Up and Coming" which could have had a stounding success at the Gay Village)

They were going to call the new Boro stadium 'Erimus'. There are 'Erimus' links all over the place here for some reason, 'Erimus Engines', for example, is close by. Not sure how it ended up in Boro but it has.

I'm pleased it is as arbitrary as its meaning.

What about 'Boro, very close to Bero - a popular pastry base'?

It's surely better than Bolton's "Supera Horas" (Overcome delays" which sounds surely more fitting to Crewe than it does to Bolton)

about 10 years ago the lovely shitty of Bradford decided on a new motto for itself, namely " Bradford - bouncing back" and massive banner was hung from the town hall, it was up two nights before some wag inserted the letter L :)

Another good one was Stockport's ambitious vision of becoming "cleaner, greener, safer and stronger" over the next twenty years, obviously begging the question what kind of dump do Stopfordians currently live in?

For the record I very much like Stockport after having lived in Heaton Norris for almost a year.

For the benefit of those of you not fully conversant with U.S. English as spoken to this day, "pasties" are those accessories worn by strippers in clubs not licensed for topless dancers.

Add a third way to read that sentence.

Interestingly witty insight there Mr Hunts. As everyone may or may not know (or may have forgotten cos of my absence from posting here of late) I too am a Middlesbrough resident and probably the only truly fanatical BORO FC supporter on this forum. Which I suppose isn't really something to crow about considering Budvar H. up there summed it all up so succinctly........yeah - talk about rubbin' our bruised an' battered noses in it all the time will yer Bud? The fact that we'll forever be the Cinderella team to end all Cinderella teams....and when Southgate decides in his infinite wisdom to decamp imminently to a bigger team in order to fulfil his Champions League dreams will be the day us underdogs will slide quickly back to obscurity once again - never to be mentioned again by the loathsome likes of Des "Iraqi Moustache" Lynam and his muppet-faced cronies on that godawfully biased orgy of ass-licking, called ITV's "The Premiership". Aye, it's tough bein' a Boro fan sometimes - so used to pissin' all over our own shoes just when we're on the verge of gettin' things right (witness this whole last season for further proof of our frustrating inconsistency and underachievement if you may). Put it another way - if free invites were mailed out to every player of every Premier League team for the ultimate slap-up celebrity wedding reception to end all celebrity wedding receptions - it'd be just Boro's luck that all ours would get lost in the post!

However......I'm kind of chuffed Newcastle didn't get the award for the City of Culture despite it being a pretty grand place in which to hang out simply because if they DID get it, it would only give our most hated of nemeses - yup - the friggin' Skunks - further cause to get even more jumped up about themselves than they already are. So in a way it's a blessing in disguise it went to Liverpool in the end - I am a Newcastle-born native by the way - spent 25 years there before decamping with my South Shields-born lass to the "land of Pasties and Parmos" where I have been happily settled in Nunthorpe for the past 10 years - all because of my undying love for the "Smoggies"....

Boro may not be the cultural mecca it so desperately wants - or deserves - to be, but at least I'm slap bang in the middle between the fast-diminishing industrial sprawl for which the area has been so renowned and the undeniable beauty of the North York Moors. No comparable region offers such a staggering contrast in landscapes within a couple of short miles. Just down the road from our house we have the Cleveland Hills and our very own Matterhorn - the pointed nipple of Roseberry Topping. Well worth a climb anytime just to see the panoramic view from one direction to the next! And as for the string of intimate little townships hugging the north east coast all the way from Redcar to Scarborough - it's a scooter-lover's paradise!

For anyone new to the area, I'd strongly recommend an extended pub crawl takin' in the following communities just to savour what this part of Captain Cook country really has to offer...... starting with Great Ayton village, Newton-under-Roseberry, then moving swiftly on towards Guisborough, Skelton, Marske, Saltburn, Brotton, Loftus, Easington and Staithes. What's more - if you love music with your beer, then there's annual folk festivals in several of the towns dotted along this stretch - like Redcar, Saltburn and Whitby to name but three. Plus, if you're a Dracula fanatic like myself (I sometimes get called Nosferatu cos I'm obsessed with the silent film of the same name) - Whitby offers some truly entertainin' weekends themed around all things Bram Stoker....culminating in a chance to get yourself pushed off the crumbling cliffs into the treacherous waves below with the spooky shadow of Whitby Abbey as a dramatic backdrop..... ;)

Awreet - that's enough blatant pluggin' for now.....

Hi Hubert! :hi: Good to see you back even if we had to resort to Boro-taunting to do it! (BTW I know near bugger-all about football, what I wrote were the opinions of someone who was even tried by Boro when he was younger)Thanks for the recommendations. And don't go away! How's the lil'one?

I'm frankly disgusted that our fair town of Norwich wasn't shortlisted for city of culture this time round.

:(

Knickers off for Norwich next time then.
