I am a huge Mission U.K. fan. I own the Children, Carved in Sand, and Grains of Sand albums...bloody brilliant stuff! I recently read somewhere that the lead singer Wayne Hussey used to be in Sisters of Mercy. Is this true? The only SoM song I have ever heard is This Corrosion. Is that Wayne singing on that track? If this is true? I would be interested in hearing your opinions on which band you think is better between the two. Does the Mission's stuff sound similar to SoM's material? Which one is darker/heavier? What SoM albums would you recommend to a Mission fan?

Hmmmmm. The Sisters of Mercy were an amphetamine-fuelled band from Leeds, formed in 1981 and consisting of Andrew "Eldritch" Taylor on drums and vocals, and Gary Marx on guitar. They then recruited a drum machine Doktor Avalanche, a guitarist Ben Gunn and bassist Craig Adams. In 1984 they sacked Ben Gunn and recruited someone called Jerry Wayne Hussey (his proper name) on guitar.
At an acrimonious split in 1985 Adams, Marx and Hussey all left Eldritch to play alone with his drum machine. He subsequently returned with a load of German hired help (and Patricia Morrison, plus Tony James from Sigue Sigue Sputnik on bass) for This Corrosion and Lucretia My Reflection, and two half decent albums. Wayne Hussey disappeared up his own arse. Craig Adams played bass for him in The Mission.

what got me was the music pres taking the pi55 out of hussey for having a yorkshire accent - he went to my school (not the one j k rowling went to) & used to live in yate so he would have had a west country burr (not like me).
i was dragged to see them once by my wife at the bristol hippydrome - made her pay mind. he said during the performance that the first gig he ever went to was at that venue (to see pink floyd i think.)
... has anyone heard the SSV album that's seen the light of day in light of continued legal wranglings with WEA/eastwest? Does anyone have lowdown on the dispute?
remember the letters Mr Eldritch used to send the weekly music press? Classic post-85 split rantings, a top-ten smells and other assorteds...
Without wishing to sound like a c&nt, but failing miserably, how can anyone be a 'huge' fan of 'Mission UK' (sic - they're just called the Mission over here) and not know the history of Hussey and the Sisters?!
Sadly though, it appears both bands are still going as well. Got a workmate who's seen the Mission recently and has tickets for the Sisters soon.
Actually, the Mission played my Uni regularly, but this was 15 years back. Their fans were indeed 'fan'atical, to say the least. When they did one tour they actually issued 'Season Tickets' so that fans could get into each gig rather than have to approach several venues for tickets. Quality idea. Didn't their fans go under a collective name too? Were they the Eskimos, or was that the New Model Army fans?!
Aaahhh ... New Model Army, how many times have I picked up their records by mistake. Each time thinking, oh, oh, a new New Order album.
No such luck. Although I've never given them a chance.
Used to see the Sisters ( & later The Mission) at the friday Goth nite@The Warehouse , surreal wasn't the word for it. There'd be myself and about 10 mates in all our footy/casual gear and everyother bugger had hairbackcombed to within an inch of its life and forty tons of mascara on and dressed only in black. Excellant music policy though, only club were you'd hear NO & JD,TheThe, Smiths, Echo, Spear of Destiney etc etc and be allowed in jeans & trainers.
I have an interesting Wayne Hussey story to tell. Hussey is currently married to a beautiful Brazilian girl called Cynthia who used to be wife of Alexandre Twin from Individual Industry, the band that covered "Bizarre Love Triangle" on "Essence" (a New Order connection?). He is trying to be a "local" here and he even rented a apartament in a city in the Great São Paulo.
Now, take a look at the photo I took when I met him in a bar: Wayne Hussey without his sun glasses.
The guy on the left is a friend of mine, but I always take the piss out of him saying to everyone he is Wayne's boyfriend.

A have "A slight Case of Overbombing". And it's really good. But I disagree with Benny when he says the band was formed in 81. There's another singles collection - almost sure it's the mentioned "Some Girls Wander By Mistake", that I don't know why the fuc.... I didn't bought yet - that actually has songs from 80 to 83.

I vaguely remember the Mission's most avid followers being called Eskimos. New Model Trainset, sorry, Army's followers were called the Christian Militia, and bloody psychos in clogs they were, taking over the gigs by building 3-tier human pyramids. God help anybody ordinary who happened to invade their 'territory' in the mosh-pit.
my old flatmate and close friend, tash, went out with wayne hussey back in 1988 or thereabouts, for about a year and even accompanied them on tour. this would not be so unusual except for the fact that she was 15 at the time and he was in his thirties! she was rather, erm, precocious, you could say.

OK, late 1980. The first gig was February 16th 1981.
Best song by The Mission - Wasteland. Best song by the Sisters Of Mercy - Dominion. That's in my humble opinion of course, haven't listened to these two bands in over a decade.
