This new Shaun Ryder thing called Amateur Night in the Big Top. Has anybody heard it or bought it? Having seen the state of him being interviewed on the 24 Hr PP dvd I really thought that's the last we'll see of him, he really did looked 'troubled' to put it politely. Next I heard there's an album/single out but haven't heard it on the radio because of lots of nasty swearing. Suspected it might be a dodgy spin-off project best forgotten but I've just seen a raving review for it in Uncut magazine, although in typical journo style, it gives no description of the music. Any opinions yet ?

Shouldn't the single have been released by now? Confess, I haven't heard it, but am looking forward to hearing it.
He's in Jack this month though - looks like Peter Kay in a fat suit..
The album's been out for a couple of weeks. The single, "Scooter Girl", came out a week before that. The single's got swearing on it so won't hear that on the radio. Considering his success with Happy Mondays and Black Grape I was really expecting a higher profile promotion than this. I think there was a bigger fanfare when "Shellshock" came out and that's with Factory's zero marketing policy! I've had to piece the news all together from google searching but can't find a music sample anywhere. Even the Thatcher/Hitler artwork hasn't created a controversial stir in the press.
Am gobsmacked. Didn't realise it was out yet, cos have seen/heard nothing of it. Shall have to investigate the record shops on me way home. . .
Downloaded it from Soulseek last night - listened to most of it in my car on the way home from work tonight. First impressions are that the music sounds a little dated in style. I believe Stephen Malinder (of Cabaret Voltaire) was involved so I would have expected someting a little more cutting edge. Shaun's vocals are mostly delivered in spoken word style and the lyrics are mostly autobiographical and frequently drugs related (surprise, surprise). It's not a total disaster - some of it is quite catchy - it may grow on me.
Overall though it is nowhere near the genius of the first Black Grape album. Incidentally, listening to an obscure, early Serge Gainsbourg album recently I realised that Shaun had ripped off a number of the tunes on the debut Black Grape album from the Frenchman - naughty boy Shaun - has anyone else noticed this ??

? Cause I own a record store in Greece and none of the record companies mentioned this to me... By the way, I never expected him to find his way back to the studios...

Played this through a couple of nights ago, and commented to a few people on this board that it would need 'a few plays' to get used to, but I didn't think it would get the chance of 'a few plays'.
However, stuck Scooter Girl on this morning and it certainly blew away the cobwebs of a bleary Friday. Quality track. Reminds me a bit of Dennis & Lois - not a favourite Mondays track of mine, but hopefully you'll get the drift; a big, bright, 'sunny' track.

It's all a bit strange really. I have seen both the single and album in UK shops in the last three weeks but it's on an Australian label called Offworld Sounds. I've done a bit of google searching and it seems this is a label run in Australia my ex-Cab Voltaire Mallinder and Pete Carroll (a Ryder relation), both have emigrated from UK. It was placed prominently in record shops I went into which is odd for an 'indie' release from a "new name". And still a deafening silence from the media.
I've downloaded "Scooter Girl", the single, from Soulseek and it's a much more produced sound than the Mondays or Black Grape, although his voice sounds cleaner (at odds with his gravelly 24 Hr PP interview!). Not a particularly memorable single given his pedigree but a groovy backing track. So I'm still undecided.
