After last Sundays out of this world REM gig, i thought i would start a thread.
So, what does everyone think of REM? Fave Songs, albums, gigs?
For me

But then again, i have only seen them twice, and i hate the MEN arena.
Yeah, REM are great. I can't say I have a favorite song..."Orange Crush" IS up there, along with "The One I Love."
I'm a big R.E.M. fan; they came to Holland in June for the first time in 14 years to play warm up gigs for the current tour at Tivoli, Utrecht (800 people)and Heineken Music Hall (4500 people). Managed to get tickets for both shows. The Tivoli show was great because of the unique (small) place and the second show was even better, because of the setlist with many of my favourites from the eighties.

One of my fave music zines of all time was the New York Rocker, which did a wonderful job back then covering the exploding US indie scene. In the Sept. 81 issue, The Cramps on the cover, which I dutifully bought, in the spotlight on demo tapes was one from this Athens GA band, and the reviewer labeled it as a pick*hit. Some highlights from the review....
R.E.M. attempt a new twist on guitar-laden pop, but the reference points are the stuff of dreams: Flamin' Groovies, Cure, Pretenders, Big Star......"Sitting Still" threatens to stand tall with the brighter moments of "Shake Some Action", "Boys Don't Cry", "Talk Of The Town", and "September Gurls". "Radio Free Europe is particularly Cure-ish, though less stark. And strains of surf and drag-beat make "White Tornado" a real winner in a field populated by too many second raters who've missed the point of the Ventures and Dick Dale. R.E.M. are a good, potentially great, group....I just couldn't see any A&R rep turning this one down!!!!(Then you haven't seen many A&R Reps lately!!.....ED.) DO send a follow-up.
As a result, I kept an eye out for these guys, though the Hib-Tone single never made it up here to the stores, so I had to wait until Chronic Town came out a year later.
Fave gig: June 84, with The Dream Syndicate, Stipe is on crutches after an oceanic mishap in San Diego a couple of days before, an extremely packed night club is one sweaty mass of whirling bodies. The band was in great spirits, and the sublime version of the previously unheard Wendell Gee as one of the encores took my breath away.
Too many fave songs like Strange Currencies, Crush With Eyeliner, King Of Birds, Belong, Radio Free Europe, Time After Time, Gardening At Night, etc...
Fave albums: Automatic, Murmur, Document, Reveal.
Best cover I've heard: Have You Ever Seen The Rain? and Arms Of Love.
worst cover: Sex Bomb by Flipper and Where's Captain Kirk by Spizz.
My favorite album is Document by far I cna listen to every song 5 times consecutively and not get tired, and I will always remember the Losing My Religion video
Ah, love REM (sort of "local boys made good", even if they are based in Georgia!). Excellent thread idea, I haven't been to a gig but I do have particular faves in the area of song and album...

You should go to one of their concerts in the US part of the current 'best of' tour which starts beginning of August, Taboo. They are playing all these songs regularly at the European shows.
I should also point out that i love I'll take the Rain (better than everybody hurts IMHO), Sidewinder, She Just Wants to be, Country Feedback and so on and so forth.
Did anyone else go and see them in Manchester?
i used to be asked if i liked REM and i always said no. then i relaized i had like 4 albums that listened to occasionally. so i guess i was a closet rem fan. ive been out of the closet for 6 years now :) my favortites:

Yep yep, REM are fantastic, probably one of my twenty favourite bands. It's to my great dismay that I've never had the fortune to see them live. Still, maybe if they tour their forthcoming album...
Can't really pick favourite songs (it would end up as a list of at least twenty), but my favourite album is probably Lifes Rich Pageant or Document...but then again, you can't go wrong with Automatic...
