Interpol on the WB last night

Performed one song (Obstacle 1) on Pepsi Smash. Anybody else see this?

I saw it on my DirecTV guide that they were performing, but only caught that rap rock band (Chalky? Chintsy?) and the Simple Plan or whatever their name is. Would have liked to see this, but really kinda surprised a band would sell out this early for a show sponsored by Pepsi.

I think it's a little harsh to say they're selling out by appearing on this show. I'd be surprised if they were paid anything to appear. I'd imagine the benefit is the exposure.

Whether they were paid cash outright, or paid for the band to fly to the set, put up in hotels, etc., it's all being paid. Anyway you look at it, they associated themselves with an hour-long Pepsi commercial.

Don't get me wrong, though. I'm a big fan of the Pepsi. Would have them transfuse it into my bloodstream if they could.

Also won't stop me from listening to Interpol. Moby sold every single song off his album for commercial use. It's the new economy.

I heard Vinni Reilly discuss Moby in derogatory terms. Vinni appeared to be disillusioned that Monty had attained such a high level of success (mainly through advertisements of products) despite his obvious lack of talent, unless you consider 3 fingered chords with cheesy sounds classy.

Vinni is correct, of course, music is often forgotten and shit gets promoted. Mop face appears to be a nice chap though, which I took as his sheepish behaviour owing to his undue success.

Interpol on Pepsi, so what, you have to make money don't you.

I wouldn't promote anything for free.

I hope you are aware, H, that the MTV Video Music Awards are coming up at the end of this month? Not as good as the movie awards, but you take what you can get.

Vinegar Ridley is 'Durutti Column' from Factory fame. Mostly songs with no words, or simply music. Very clever, most of the stuff. Well worth checking out; any album, any song.

Him and Bruce Mitchell on percussion, and drums. Plus some guests.

i really wouldnt call it selling out. unless they had like 'pepsi' on their guitar straps, or the drummer took a big pull off of a 2 liter in between cigarette breaks mid-song.

I saw a commercial for Pepsi Smash, but I saw that Evanescence ( :barf: ), one of the several bands that have had their single on constant rotation on the Top 40 station in Philly for about 2 months, and I decided to avoid it. The lead singer doesn't have such a bad voice, but the lyrics and repetitive power chords drive me nuts. And people call them the best rock band right now. But, c'mon, "Wake me up inside/Wake me up inside..." blah, blah, blah. Bad teenage Goth angst poetry. Sorry :topic:.

It was a different episode of the same show. They were quite good.

Is "Obstacle 1" a nod to "Exercise One" ?

Somebody mentioned that Interpippins had no clue about Joy Division so I doubt it. Perhaps it was reference to Rocky 1, where Apollo Creed is destroyed.

I'd heard that interpol sounded like JD but i saw them on MTV2 the other night and i couldn't believe what i heard - an absolute fucking rip-off. The lead singer is doing a severe Ian Curtis impression, the drums were (trying to be) like Steve's and the bassist has even got a Hooky stance!!

And they claim they know nothing about JD?

In my mind, Interpol are the best band in the world right now (a tag normally reserved for stadium-filling pillocks banging on about free trade *ahem*). They're at a really exciting stage having released one of the best debuts in living memory (once people realise that The Strokes and Vines, and any other NME darlings' records, are pretty cack when held up to repeated listening), yet they still have a distinctly underground feel to them, and are fortunately not known by every MTV2/NME devotee (who would only namedrop them as this month's cool band). Don't hear much JD in there, except for perhaps Obstacle 1 and Leif Erikson. Certainly Paul Banks sings in a register similar to IC, but is actually a far more fluent and versatile vocalist (listen to the ending of Obs.1), and I really enjoy 90% of the lyrics, which are very multi-faceted, as opposed to Ian Curtis (whom I have and probably always will defend until my dying day...) whose lyrics are distinctly one-dimensional (though nonetheless positively inspired despite this) insofar that they focus on depression, decay of the human condition, etc.

The only member of the band who ever listened to JD is the bassist, but he also listens to The Cure, so that doesn't hold him in much stead.

I'm just really glad that Interpol exist as a band. I've never anticipated a second album with such relish in my life (and I've lived through Oasis, Radiohead, et al)

Interpol is what I have mainly been listening to for quite some time now, interspersed with BSP. It's been quite a while since the Strokes were on the playlist.
