all right, i have worked the balls up to actually get this thing off the ground. tell your all your mixtapin' friends.

here is the process:

send your personal info (name & address) to ilovemixtapes@hotmail.com (Friday the 15th is the last day)

when you recieve your assignment, make one home-made mixtape (NO CDs!!!) and send it to the person.

its so easy, a well trained monkey could do it. and, there will be plenty of non-NO/JD fans involved, so don't worry about getting a tape full of rarities you already have.

the thing i like about it is that total strangers are making tapes for each other.

Possibly even earlier, Hunter. Do you recall the 'casette & crossbones' logo with the legend 'home taping is killing music and it's illegal' on the inside of compilation LPs? It is displayed prominently on the inner sleeve of 'Chart Hits 82', a stupendous collection of such classics as Happy Talk, Yellow Pearl, Zambezi, The Lion Sleeps Tonight..... and that's only LP1! Yes, there were 2!! For only £6.99!!!

What I can't understand is I've often taped stuff in my home (decorations to walls, warning notices to windows), and have even video taped my home on occasion. To be honest, all that home taping damaged my music collection not a jot.

They are slapping a hefty tax on blank CD's and tapes over here! So much for a supposedly market friendly government!

I actually meant the action to mix songs on to tape, not the legal issues.

A man in Peru compiled a cassette of Stock, Aitken and Waterman songs in '82. It took him about 5 hours to scramble around picking out his favourites to complete the task. During the 8 hours it took to rewind the C90 tape back to the beginning, his wife had left him for his mate and a stray ram had knocked his house into a stream ... along with his original 7" collection.

His name was Derek.

Since then, its usually easier to download and burn onto CD. Accept when you use a Mac, in which case there's more chance your house will be knocked into a stream by a stray rabbit.

I mixed tapes - not CDs - of the Cure and rare pre-'91 Smashing Pumpkins back in 1999 and, gasp!, sold them. So far, no one's come and arrested me, but making mix tapes are still kind of fun - as long as you can still find tapes and know what songs you want on one.

i usually spend saturday afternoons with a blank tape, my music collection, a twelve pack of pacifico, and my cats. though, my cats don't really help in the mixtaping process. they usually lay on my feet, so i accidently kick them when i have to jump off the couch to stop the tape from recording the beginning of the next song.

I find my inspiration usually goes after I flip the tape over and start the b-side. I'll start off with a general idea, but that goes about 5 songs into the deal, and it becomes "what obscure song by well-known artists can I plug in next to save this thing?" I may just end up sending a tape I've already made (there are some good ones) or start anew with a fresh, uncorrupted tape. Now I actually have a REASON to do one right!

i love seging songs with the audio from favorite movie scenes, or old video game jingles (i run my playstation, sega genisus, VCR & DVD player through my stereo so i can record it all). there's nothing like good dialog from a kevin smith flick to buffer the ends of the tape so you don't end up with unused tape, or songs that cut off.

That's one of the many reasons I love minidisc. Stupid Americans, never caught on.

That brings back memories. Back around 89/90 I got a tape of around 20 or so songs from a mate and every track was preceded by a short audio clip from a film, which tied in nicely with the song. Excellent. It's just a pity it was a crap quality cassette, which died after about 2 years, and I've since lost touch with the mate in question. :\ohwell:
