interpol - band in transition OR yet another interpol thread

Has anyone here checked out the new interpol live tracks? (length of love, strangers in the night) they're EXCELLENT. length of love especially.. the new songs are way more upbeat and dareIsayit, a bit poppy. I'm really looking forward to the new record.

Interpol is the Joy Division for the 'Gap' and 'Tommy Hilfiger' set, but I like their album a lot, it's very good. I'll probably get their new one when it comes out, as I seem to be a sucker these days for anything retro.

Anyone remember Black Rebel Motorcycle Club? They put out a really good debut record sometime last year, very Jesus and Mary Chain-esque, but I've been lazy about reading the music press and thus don't know what's going on with them lately.

sorry i took so long to get back to you all i listened to their music and it just doesnt do anything for me thats not why i hate them though. and its probably not their fault thati cant stand them but all the comparisons to joy division anger me because they dont remind me of joy division at all. and now all thease " indie" people are running around trendy areas of new york with joy division shirts on but they dont lidsten to joy division they listen to interpol (i have asked a lot of them , and they are like " oh yeah love will tear us apart oh man thats great!")

so im sorry to anyone who really likes the band but i cannot stand them

I knew a girl back at USC who claimed to be a "huge Smiths fan", but all she owned was the '95 singles collection and only listened to "How Soon is Now?" The Interpol kids you described would ruin it for me as well. The same thing happened to me when all these so-called "fans" of Ricky Martin talked about "Livin' La Vida Loca", and I just knew they'd never bothered to listen to "She Bangs!"

I don't hear Joy Division in them either. JD is just another name for the indie-chic kids to drop to make it sound like their new favorite band is something more than just another predictable, typical-sounding indie rock act, which it certainly is.

And never heard about Menudo I hated them cause the girls just wanted to know about them in early eighties

I really had no interest in interpol when I first heard about them. My attitude was like 'I've heard them before. as joy division. I'm inclined to think joy division is better.' But their album is pretty good and its really not so much pure joy division as it is a synthesis of joy division sparseness and smiths/television like guitarwork. In terms of the whole 'old is new scene' theyre one of the better bands out there. and like i said, their newer unrecorded stuff sounds like its going somewhere interesting.

there isn't much sparesness to "turn on the bright lights." the only thing JD about this band are the singers voice, and the slightly macabre and cold mood the band sets. musically, the throw-back bands they are closer to are the likes of some old U2, the Smiths, etc...

but compare all you want, i have no problems with bands sounding like other bands. i side with frank's point: the music doesn't do much for me. the textures are virtually the same, the mood rarely change. the only thing that changes from song to song are the rhythms and the chords, yet the album still lacks virsatility.

I like to keep the two bands separate, but whenever I hear of either of them they always get meshed together. Interpol is great, but they need to release some new stuff soon, instead of just remixed songs.

getting back to why I started this thread.. if you guys have soulseek, do a search for interpol - length of love and strangers in the night. theyre way different from what you're used to. im kinda ignorant to drum beats, but im pretty sure length of a love is a four on the floor dancey number that gets stuck in your head for days.. pretty new order-like if you ask me.

that's totally cool. i think that interpol has loads of potential, but "turn on the bright lights" isn't 'it'. i am not ruling them out as a bad band, or a knock-off band. in fact i am very interesting to hear what the next album sounds like.

Yes, they are an american band. If you like the brit sound, you can't like american bands this way. You can like american bands that sounds... american. An american band trying to sound brit is sh..., and that's what happens here. I can't believe NO and JD fans may even think in a comparison... Each song sounds just like the other. They have no rhythm, the guitar is awfully simple. It's crap, for God sake!

I read that they've been around the world 4 times already in support of their debut. Im surprised they havent hit strokes-level burnout by now. (ie; being so fucking drunk, sloppy and sub-par due to excessive touring)

Their recent Peel session was pretty good, featuring a new song called, err "The New" would you believe. Also worth Soulseeking out is The Black Session, done for French radio.

I just got the Interpol single "NYC" and i love it, a wonderful brooding song, But the Joy Division comparisons are unfounded, i don't see any resemblance between the two bands at all (the singer doesn't sound like Ian Curtis). Interpol just toured here and of course i missed out (jumped on the bandwagon too late). Their debut album is on my most wanted list, along with the debut from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Yes, The New is old. Just repeating John Peel's joke about the title. You didn't like the Black stuff? Admittedly the EP only has four of the ten broadcast songs, so may sound a little disjointed.

I actually started on this whole Interpol thing completely unbiased - hadn't heard any media attention, knew nothing about them. About a year ago I played a CD sampler that I got with Uncut magazine. Uncut's sample CD's are usually average, full of stuff you'll never want to hear again but this one had "NYC" by Interpol on it and it completely blew me away. You start searching for more info on the web and then you get illuminated by what it's all about and everybody's opinions. Initially I never even thought Joy Division. I was thinking its The Kitchens Of Distinction with The Psychedelic Furs on vocals. I agree with Spotnick earlier, that the albums first 4 tracks are brilliant but the rest of it tails off into filler with a good sound but lacking any real songs. Hope they can deliver a decent, more consistent second album. It's nice to know that I still like what I like and I'm not subconsciously agreeing with any kind of hype that music media tries to start. I mean I didn't fall for These Animal Men, 3 Colours Red or Skunk & Nancy.
