interpol - band in transition OR yet another interpol thread

I just got the Interpol single "NYC" and i love it, a wonderful brooding song, But the Joy Division comparisons are unfounded, i don't see any resemblance between the two bands at all (the singer doesn't sound like Ian Curtis). Interpol just toured here and of course i missed out (jumped on the bandwagon too late). Their debut album is on my most wanted list, along with the debut from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Yes, The New is old. Just repeating John Peel's joke about the title. You didn't like the Black stuff? Admittedly the EP only has four of the ten broadcast songs, so may sound a little disjointed.

I just thought it sounded thin and flat.

I actually started on this whole Interpol thing completely unbiased - hadn't heard any media attention, knew nothing about them. About a year ago I played a CD sampler that I got with Uncut magazine. Uncut's sample CD's are usually average, full of stuff you'll never want to hear again but this one had "NYC" by Interpol on it and it completely blew me away. You start searching for more info on the web and then you get illuminated by what it's all about and everybody's opinions. Initially I never even thought Joy Division. I was thinking its The Kitchens Of Distinction with The Psychedelic Furs on vocals. I agree with Spotnick earlier, that the albums first 4 tracks are brilliant but the rest of it tails off into filler with a good sound but lacking any real songs. Hope they can deliver a decent, more consistent second album. It's nice to know that I still like what I like and I'm not subconsciously agreeing with any kind of hype that music media tries to start. I mean I didn't fall for These Animal Men, 3 Colours Red or Skunk & Nancy.
