tis indeed a top movie - won readers film of the year in our local listings magazine when it came out - picked the dvd up for £7 in the hmv sale

secretary bombed but was very enjoyable.

bought the dvd from the states cos wanted to watch it again, everyone ive shown it to has liked/loved it.

intacto was also another one that was thoroughly original - spanish language film witha great premise - that luck can be stolen & it deals with the people that deal in luck - if you cant find it wait a couple of years for the US remake.

My own private idaho - I was 7 when it came out, but I doubt it made a lot of money, since a good deal of the film is people talking, Keanu reeves actually ACTING!, and River Phoenix going between Portland, Rome, and Idaho to look for his mother. It's actually one of my favorite films, although Gus Van Sant isn't one of my favorite directors, especially after he did that terrible Psycho remake. The Low-Life - apparently, it was so indie back in 1997 that this was only shown at 5 theaters in this country. It stars Rory Cochran and Kyra Sedgwick, Kevin Bacon's wife, and is funny in parts, although I mostly liked it because Cochran's character was a writer, who had writer's block.

My Own Private Idaho is just about freaking perfect at some points, and it features Udo Kier of Andy Warhol's Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein.

Speaking of River Phoenix, Running on Empty is understated and wonderful.

My American Cousin is another good "small" film that deals head-on with every Canadian's worship of the American male.

Robert Duvall is the best actor working today and rules over Tender Mercies and The Apostle.

Who doesn't love Donnie Darko, especially with its '80s soundtrack.

Ooh, and One False Move is a fine "small" action/cop drama.

Jeez, a lot of the films I would stick up for probably wouldn't really be "underdogs", as they have rabid cult followings (Brazil, Rushmore, etc.)

I particularly like "Igby Goes Down", as it was almost a "Max Fischer with money" film. Loved "The Royal Tenenbaums" as well. Tried to start a thread about "Jerry Seinfeld:Comedian" a few weeks back, but it was no going. "Kids in teh Hall:Brain Candy" is a bit of a disappointment after seeing the TV show, but it has some worthy moments. And "24 Hour Party People", of course

How can his remake of Psycho be so terrible? it's a perfect copy of the original.. except in colors and with different actors..

Otherwise, he litterally did each scene the same way they are in the original movie...

So it can't be worst that the original, unless Anne Heche and Vince Vaughn suck!

Well, aside that the actors' performances were no where near those of the original, the film was just bland and boring. Scene for scene, indeed, but the original seemed to be far more interesting.

I'll try Running on Empty. It's another film I haven't heard of, but maybe I'll be able to find it at the public library. And I do agree that My Own Private Idaho is almost flawless at some points. It's a shame that whenever I rented it from Blockbuster at college, my roommate and his friends, all obnoxious acting majors, decided to complain, because I was watching a "Keanu Reeves film." Of course, those are the same people that I could kick out just by putting on Pet Shop Boys' Please.

I agree on Brazil and the Wes Anderson movies, as those are some of my favorites. But what's the deal with Igby Goes Down? I was looking forward to it after reading solid reviews--but GOD DAMN that was the most unwatchably bad movie I saw last year. I hated every minute of it, even when the always entertaining Jeff Goldblum was on screen. Awful movie. I despise it! Utter filth!!

And speaking of utter filth, my big surprise movie that I never heard about until a friend recommended it and I was blown away was "Happiness." It has since become one of my very favorite comedies. Hilarious from start to finish, very deserving of cult status. No one saw it because the fucking MPAA was going to rate it NC-17 so the director released it unrated instead, effectively keeping it out of the megaplexes and newspapers. But that's de facto censorship for you. Not that it would be well received in the megaplexes anyway, as it deals with pedophilia as one of its subplots, but whatever. In the words of my theatre prof, it would terrify the pretty bourgeois. I can't recommend it enough, especially to those with a dark streak when it comes to humor, as it's quite dark.

Speaking of Keanu...

Only River's Edge offers you fine performances by Keanu Reeves, Crispin Glover, and Dennis Hopper all in one film. And Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break features some serious homoerotic cops-on-robbers action and a cameo by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

And hell, if you liked either Rushmore or Igby Goes Down, you've got to see Lucas, featuring a young Winona Ryder as the nerdy marching band chick and Kerri Green as the hot chick.

And don't see Reanimator without seeing its slightly not-as-good counterpart, From Beyond, in which a large tuning fork evokes brain-sucking leeches from a parallel universe.

i Pick "Once Were Warriors", i saw it way back on the Independent Film Channel, great film from new zealand, mostly amatuer Actors in it, basically it about a really fucked up family very sad story the guy that played jango Fett in Episode II Plays the father

Damn, I love love love Strange Days.

Ralph Finnes and Angela Bassett are fantastic together; great acting, great chemistry. Check out their faces during that scene where Ralph's elevator keeps descending past his floor. Juliette Lewis is great as usual, as is Tom "Wifebeater" Siezemore. And Ms. Bassett kicks ass in all ways.

The rape/murder is tough to stomach and surprisingly gruesome for a "chick" director like Ms. Bigelow. Be warned o sensitive viewer.

Ralph is awesome in everything, including Graham Greene's The End of the Affair with Julianne Moore, who is great in Todd Haynes' Safe, which I like quite a bit.

Oh, yeah, speaking of safe, I can actually recommend a comedy: Safe Men with Steve Zahn and Michael Barton Fink Lerner as Big Fat Bernie Gayle.

I'm a big fan of Tombstone. I think it's some of Val Kilmer's best work. His Doc Holiday is outstanding.

This movie is sooo much better than Wyatt Earp.
