Another thread on movies.

This time it's for movies that out of nowhere, changes completely and you are totally surprised.

I'll give two examples:

  1. From Dusk Till Dawn from Quentin Tarantino

That was totally.. unexpected...!!!

  1. Bicentennial Man

Let's say that you expect a familly movie, you got bored, and suddenly it starts to be a really really good movie...

Phantom Menace - it starts out with the classic Star Wars theme music, the opening words scroll by and the excitement builds - then surprise! Within 10 mins of dreadful dialogue you realise that it's going to be shit

Scream. Didn't really know what to expect but assumed it'd just be a really bad spoof. Pleasantly surprised.

Bit shocked it was 'starring Drew Barrmore' though, and she goes and gets dismembered before the opening credits!!

wouldnt say it changed completely but surely the ultimate shock was the stomach burster coming from mr hurt in alien?

& who would have guessed that the then unkown sigourney weaver would be the last survivor (not counting jones the cat)

I heard the cat who played Jonesy the other day in an interview say exactly the same thing, except he said 'except Sigourney Weaver's character who also survived alonside myself'.

One of the surprise movie hits of all time must be 'Snuff' ... its fairly mundane rhubarb until the last 3 mins. where they pull the birds entrails out and throw them around the room.

I don't think I'd care to see that one, H.

There is always the Crying Game.. altough I kind of figured about it before it was "shown" to us

Snuff Box isn't the movie fitting for a gentleman, its rather saucy in parts, and as mentioned the ending is a little hard on the eye.

The woman who 'gets it' never actually received 'it' at all (the movie was meant to be 'real', thus snuff) - instead, she enjoyed the attention signing scraps of paper for horror movie buffs who track her down in the States gobbling toast and tea.

Jumpers Crumpets Du is featuring on the cinema screens soon, I'm almost neutral about its expectant release.

I thought you were excited about JC II, H. I know I am.

I'm more excited at the prospect of the Amazon Woman delivering the new box set to your door in shrink wrapping (the product would be in a box). The Lord of the Nosebags is almost upon us, let us celebrate and make love.

I'm so excited about that little item, H, that I am actually planning to go to a store to buy it.

Am I to understand that I have a syndrome named for me?

Celluloidoptimismletdown.

First diagnosed upon the release of Rocky V.

If caught, could prove difficult to shake for 30 minimum 34 years.

No known cure, but is stated awards ceremonies good tonic, alongside hot soup.

I'm almost certain I've never seen any of the Rocky movies. I've certainly tried very hard to avoid them, as well as James Bond movies, although I've had the misfortune of seeing one or two of them. Utterly repellant.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I already knew about Monty Python from watching them on TV, and had already seen the movie once, when I took my dad to see it. We settled in our seats, the theater lights dimmed, and the opening scene began, with King Arthur and his knights trotting along a road; at first, just the crests of their helmets were visible, bobbing up and down as they trotted up a rise in the road. As the knights rode closer, my father eagerly anticipated the beginning of a medieval epic...and then they "rode" into full view, trotting along on their leading feet, their hands holding imaginary reins, a pair of coconuts clapping together. My father let out an audible "what the???" His reaction was hilarious.

I have to say, the first viewings of "The Usual Suspects" and "The Sixth Sense", with their attendant surprises (just in case anyone here STILL hasn't seen either) came out of nowhere. Now, of course, i watch it and know already, but the first time around was a surprise.

Then there was the "Blair Witch", which turned out to be shockingly unscary after all the hype on the 'Net...

"The Wicker Man".

I wasn't expecting that ending at all! I watched this on TV when I was a teenager and I had no idea of what the movie was about. It's interesting to know that this movie gained somewhat of a cult status over the years.

"Battle Royale": Under a new law, a class of Japanese high schoolers is taken to a deserted island where they have exploding collars strapped to their necks and are forced to kill each other off as population control/setting an example to the youth to respect their elders. They each get a backpack with a random weapon/item inside ranging from the mundane (pot lid) to the very deadly (machine gun). Their 7th grade teacher, played by director Takeshi Kitano (although he didn't direct this film), comes back to administer the game. The kids naturally begin killing each other according to their little social groups and the fun ensues. Lots of action, bloodletting, explosions, and humor. Great score mixes things up with some classical music to compliment the violence (think Clockwork Orange). Very fun movie that never got released in the U.S. because it just isn't p.c. to have a movie about high schoolers killing each other. The sequel came out in July in Japan, and I'm hoping to see it soon.

John Carpenter's 1982 remake of "The Thing".

You think it's going to be just another sci-fi monster movie. Then in various scenes, the dogs face peels back to reveal the creature, Dr.Copper gets his arms bitten off, the head sprouts legs and scuttles away followed by the immortal line "you've got to to be f***ing kidding" :jawdrop:

And it has no real ending. Quality.

2001 - the whole thing starts up with that music, planets, moons, etc all over the shop, then... APES!!! Utterly wonderful. Plus the end, of course, where Dave sees (and then becomes) progressively older versions of himself, then finally after the one where he dies - BABY!!!

The Wizard Of Oz - for the change from Black 'n' White to Colour.

Once Upon A Time In The West - for "what are we gonna do with this one Frank?" If you've seen it, you know the bit.

Duh! To Live and Die in L.A. Wear a neck brace to protect yourself from the twist.

I'd love to spoil it for you, but you really should rent it. Quality.

Oh yeah, the sadly overlooked White of the Eye. Rent that one too.

The original version of The Vanishing was quite a shock...I haven't seen the American version, but it apparently totally undoes the ending.

I had to sit through the Divine Secerets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. And I was surprised at how much more it sucked that I expected.

Memento's filming technique was a pleasant surprise, tho.

The Hulk was more of a comedic experience for me than a summer action for me. I laughed at least ten times through the movie

Memento. The scene where the woman really pisses him off, steals all the pens, pencils and papers and then leaves the house until she is sure that he forgot that he beat her. She returns and lies about her black eye.

Pulp Fiction, "Spiders caught a fly..." scene.

Boys Don't Cry No Cure songs in the movie.

One of Kurt Russell's 2 good movies, the other being Escape from New York ("call me Snake"). I reckon the opening scene of The Thing is one of the best ever, with the helicopter chasing the dog over the snow. Some of the special effects look pretty dated now, but the psychological edge is still there. Great stuff.

There was a cover of the titular song, if I remember correctly.

The movie Charlotte Sometimes (haven't seen it, heard it sucks big time, has nothing to do with the song or the book) lacks that song as well, though I read an interview that they are filming a proper version of the book Charlotte Sometimes and The Cure will naturally be providing the theme.

I find that most movies named after a song suck. Except for 24HPP, but then again I am biased.

That was disappointing that the original Cure song wasn't in the movie, but it was still a good film. Too bad Hilary Swank hasn't done any memorable work since.
