one of my grandmathers died of cancer at 62 and she never smoked in her whole life. the other one smoked all of her life and she died at 94, and because she couldn´t recover of a hip operation!
i smoke but i don´t recommend it. i agree that you´re risking your health smoking and there´re more chances to get cancer. but you never know. if you drink too much you might die of cirrhosis, if you do bridge jumping you might find yourself with your head at 20 fts under ground, if you cross a street a car might run over you..... etc, etc, etc. life is dangerous!

I smoked from age 18 to 30 and loved it - especially on a cold Winter's day after coming out of the water after a 2 hr surf and getting into the car and your hands are frozen and it takes bloody ages to light the damn thing and then that first drag - aaahhh. And of course when drinking - those pack a night pub/club nights. I'm glad I finally managed to stop - just went cold turkey on New Year's Day 1999 and haven't touched it since, though I still miss it occasionally (minus the hangover headaches of course). Cigarettes are now approx $10 a pack over here, so for one thing I'm saving a shitload of money.

Anyone ever here of Ziggy Stardust??? Rock&Roll Suicide??? I was in the mood for Bowie. Trust me, I do not take cancer lightly, having lost my father (one of 48 that had it on the heart) and his father who croaked of cancer of the pancreas (sp). But I know people who smoked well into their 80s and 90s and never got cancer.

I look at it this way, the big man is gonna take you when he decides it's time...so you can keep off the drink, never smoke, always wear your seat belt and what not, but that's about the time a drunk looking for the smoke that he dropped in the floorboard of his car is gonna broadside you...so enjoy the trip while you are here...cuz we all know how this story is gonna end!

A bumper after a surf was bliss for me too Dr Pats > I managed to quit in 1996> but the demon drink has increased 10 fold 
yeah, the only times I've ever smoked a cigarette was when I was absolutely pissed out of my mind to the point that I couldn't taste much of anything and someone offered me one.

Smoking: Bad idea Tristan. You're not hooked now, so no reason to get hooked. Every addict says they can quit anytime they want- but they rarely quit, and when they do, the longing never goes away. Mark Twain said quitting smoking was easy- he did it hundreds of times.
Drinking: I won't score any points on NOOL, but drinking in moderation- a few drinks a week- won't hurt you; drinking to excess is slow suicide. American kids binge drink because they generally don't have access to alcohol until they get to college, and then they overdo it. European kids get access to alcohol gradually, and by the time they're in college, drinking is no big deal. You're healthy now- try to stay that way. You'll be happier for it later.

The end. i can use smoking to beat the freshman 15... i know I'm not going to smoke or drink, I've never had a desire do one or the other; both are disgusting habits; maybe I'll start drinking wine later in life, but maybe not.
yeah tristan, don't start smoking if you haven't already. as for some drinks... beer taste really good with a lot of our local cuisine.

I don't like the taste of beer, but I do like beer battered shrimp, and I love alcohol in desserts, as long as it's cooked.
