Does A Toronto 82 and 85 proshot video exist?

hi there,

I was wondering if this stuff really exists. I met a guy at the Hooky dj show last year who said that there was a 82 pro shot and I have seen a guy who had posted a long time ago who said that he had the 85 pro shot and that the band liked better than the toyko show.

Anyone know for sure?

Well seeing as they didn't play Toronto in 82, I'd ben inclined to think that there was no video of a gig that didn't take place!

The 85 one is a different matter though. When I interviewed Hooky in June this year he mentioned it, that it was going to have some kind of release. Wait and see!

There also is footage of the November 11, 1981 Toronto Masonic Temple performance. It was shot on a single pro camera. It is perhaps 2 or 3 songs with some "cutaway" shots for editing. New Order and Rob refused being interviewed and the show was quite a disaster. 240 volt to 120 volt inverters for hydro to convert England power to Canada didn't work. Stage circuits blew, sythesizers wouldn't work. Bernard has discussed this in interviews.

The set list was:

However, I don't recall the exact contents. Like the 1985 performance, this has been transferred to DVD and it is up to the band to decide it's fate.

So that's what the problem was that night! Cheers Paul, you've just solved a mystery. Great quality audio recording of that 81 show, always wondered what the synth problems were though.

I think Bernard sometimes confuses the 81 Toronto show with the 83 Chicago Metro show in interviews, where everything packed up six songs in and they had to do the rest of the set without any kind of sequencers. Then again, he denies ever having heard Procession, so what can you do?

As the filmer, presumably you hold the masters of these two videos?

Yes I own the masters of the 1981/1985 shows. Dubbed to digital & preserved.

I'm sad to have just found out that Paul Boyd passed away from cancer in December of 2006.

Life is really too short...

I hope his DVD-Rs have been preserved, I'm not sure if the tracks that made it to Glasgow's DVD2 were taken from his masters or from the band's copy, the amount of video noise and glitches suggests it could have been the later.

i was Paul Boyd's assistant for this shoot and was beside him for the whole show (and at the airport and the band's hotel the previous day).

the 3/4" master tape is in storage with a lot of other tapes. unfortunately, all uncatalogued.

the songs released on the Glasgow bonus DVD are presumably from the copy that Paul had sent to Steve Morris.

unfortunately, i don't have a copy of the original footage that we shot. i can definitely confirm that the footage of The Perfect Kiss that was posted recently on YouTube and Peter Hook's MySpace page, originates from what we shot. it really makes me wish that the whole show had been put on the bonus DVD though.

Thanks Bernard, it is indeed a fantastic record of the New Order 1985 live experience, loved the stuff that appeared on the bonus DVD, and the TPK shot on You Tube is superb. It would be a fitting tribute to Paul if this were released in its entirety.
