And who's trying the psycho T-then-Oxegen double header, like the band will be?

I know about ten people who did that for Orbital in 04. I can't afford it, as I'll probably be at Oxegen both days anyway.

I am but i just wish i could get some definte confirmation of the days that they are playing, im sure they are playing t in the park on the saturday but are they definetly playing oxegen on the sunday?

If they're playing Oxegen, its Sunday. Same weekend as T, same promoters..

I don't have an identifiably Irish accent, and it was even worse a few years ago (middle class generic with scummy mancland and donegal - bad mix which made me sound like I was from Leicester...) and I had *no* problems.

Went to Oxegen last year and it was brill. It is no more commercial than any other festival and I had a great day so much so that I have already booked me tickets and hotel in nass and the fact the order are playing is a massive bonus. Can't wait.

I'm definitely going to Oxegen. Despite being from Northern Ireland I haven't been before, but I know loads of people that have and absolutely love it. I've never heard anything negative about Oxegen/Witness before reading the stuff on this forum. I think the racist-bigots remarks were uncalled for, obviously you could have a bad experience at any festival but none of my mates with strong Northern accents have ever had any problems. Not really fair to imply that all Irish people are bigots - if that's your attitude please don't come.

Ireland is a very very reactionary & racist place. Last summer, 4 out of 5 Irish people backed the government in playing the race card, and voted to have the kids of non-national parentage booted out of the country without a passport. 60% (of the 80%) when polled cited explicitely racist reasons, the other 40% (again of the 80%) had quasi economic reasons for voting that way. It made me want to burn my passport.

In general, I know that Ireland is racist because I live here too.

Im sure most people will get that bullshit “cead mile failte” we will take your money welcome, and I wouldn’t at all be put off by the bigots (most of whom will be easily spotted) if I were a foreign national at a music festival. As I said, you get muppets at every big gig in the world, Oxegen will have more than its fair share – it is also prohibitatively expensive in comparison with continental festivals (taking all into account not just ticket price), but probably much the same as a UK festival.

I didn’t want this to descend into anything “political” (although I would have said my points were more social). I quoted only factual statistics and personal opinion anyhow. No country is more adept making people feel welcome - if there is some money in it - as Ireland. If sweaty bars, guitar music and “craic” (possibly the only subject on which I agree with John Waters on) is your thing – then come over.

I think its only fair to non-Irish NOOLers who may be considering Oxegen to tell them that it is very expensive. Accommodation in Dublin is pretty pricey, a packet of crisps will set you back 70c in some places, Busses to and from the venue will probably exceed €25 this year, on festival site (unlike Euro festivals) you wont be allowed bring in your own food and drink, and will be forced to pay extremely expensive prices for it on site - also, the weather probably wont be as good as it will be on the continent, etc.

As I'm the only person who owned up to being dissuaded by CC's comments, it's perhaps worth pointing out that the real reason I won't be at Oxegen is the logistics/cost of getting from "T" to Ireland in 24 hours. I can't be arsed, bigots or no bigots.

It doesn’t benefit me in any way possible to say what I did – Id love to see more New Order fans coming over to these parts, and wish the place I live in wasn’t quite as vulgar as it is, but it is, and burying your head in the sand wont change that.

For the final time : I just thought it best to let anyone who has a choice as to where they are travelling for a foreign festival that Oxegen is in Naas, its pretty pricey, you wont find too many New Order fans there, the band are likely to be pretty far down the bill, and yes, Ireland is a pretty scarily nationalist and indeed racist place (you were about for the referendum last summer – werent you?).

Basically, if I was not living in this country, and I had a choice between going to Oxegen, or going to a cheaper, better festival on the continent – I wouldn’t hesitate to take that plane south.

Have you lived ANYWHERE else than Ireland? Or been to somewhere for something other than a booze cruise holiday?

If not, you don't realise that its a far, FAR better place to live than many others. I've been halfway across Europe, outside of tourist season, outside of tourist locations, and if you want to see racism, bigotry, and nationalism, you can find far, far worse places than even the Bogside, let alone Naas.

There are of course worse places to live and work than our country, but this has nothing to do with that, and everything to do with recommending places to go – and not to go for NewOrderOnLiners. These are after all real people with real hard earned cash – Id hope they would have the time to dish out honest info to me before I decide on heading around to gigs this summer. I think everyone here should be as honest as possible about gigs, etc. Were NewOrder to play somewhere quite intimate and reasonably good, I would recommend that anyone who wants to should come along – as I did this time last year when Kraftwerk were on tour.

Ive no bone to pick with my own country - but there are some is a characteristic nastiness about events like Oxegen, which should be discussed.

On the referendum, 4 out of 5 Irish voters decided to refuse citizenship to the children of non-national parents last summer. The referendum was a blatant attempt by the government parties to tap into the aforementioned racism that is rampant in our state (as Im sure it is in Lyon and Bolton). The minister for justice claimed on national radio that he needn’t supply statistics to support his claims of floods of immigrants entering the country, (there were only ones on the contrary) but that “you can see them (immigrants) everywhere”. You don’t “see” British nationals, Australian nationals, or Americans. You do “see” people of different race however. It is typical of the casual racism that is evident in our country. This isn’t Alabama in the 30s, but something far more refined.

If you look back, I only mentioned racism as one of several critiques of events like oxegen and Ireland today (which frankly sickens me at times) – but it’s always the one that gets picked up on. The perennial sense of moral correctness and national victim hood is all over this discussion. The reflected image of Irish-America and sense lack of an empirical history seems to cloud our collective national identity. Somebody who objectively looks at their locality and state with the aim of correcting it shouldn’t be seen as “Anti Irish” or a “Sleaseball”.

I don’t drink alcohol by the way – not that my personal life has anything to do with this. Booze cruises aren’t really my thing. I find that frankly insulting.

If you want to have a nice honest debate about all this, then Im fine about it – but don’t revert to the name-calling and personal snipes. Please.

I find anyone making an assumption that that referendum was racially motived very, very shallow. Sure, it was a Fianna Fail government that proposed it, but...

The booze cruise reference was that most people who seem to have this opinion that the continent is better have just gone to touristy areas, in touristy times of year, and had a good time. I went by train, in winter, at the age of 16, across most of Europe, and I can tell you, its not better. At bloody all. Racism and sectarianism is far, far worse there - particularly anti-English in Slovakia, for instance, and thats not counting the anti-gypsy skinhead gangs there were in Poland, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Idealistic visions about the continent being nicer, less bigoted, and cheaper do not ring true. For what I buy, my suburb of Dublin is far cheaper than Manchester is, for instance. This is assuming you don't shop in Kwik Save - but I'm sure Aldi over here is just as cheap. Ireland also has some of the cheapest petrol in Europe at the moment, particularly if you live around a Tesco station.

As goes warning English people that Ireland is sectarian and biased against them, thats ultimate bullshit. A large number of my friends are English, and none of them have had any problems here, even the one with a Bradford accent that could cut steel. I've walked through Brighton with a tricolour over my back also - the lack of bigotry is pretty much reciprocated these days

According to exit poles, of those who voted for the referendum (80%), 60% cited explicitly racist reasons for doing so. It was carried out by RTEs prime time – hardly a bastion of progressive ideas. Doing simple maths, that corresponds to just under 50% of voters following an explicitly racist line.

For a start, I didn’t mention English people in this thread (read back), and don’t have any idealised visions of a continent I have travelled in extensively. In my experience, (re-read, experience) European festivals are better organised, sunnier, cheaper, easier going, and a lot more pleasurable to attend than the 2 times Ive been to Witnness/Oxegen. I haven’t been to V, T, etc, but suspect that they would be equally crap – although with more fans receptive to New Order.

I don’t follow the football, haven’t ever worn a celtic (sorry shug) or Ireland top, or tri colour, and fucking hate “Paddys” day. These are personal and subjective opinions that I left out of this thread. Im not into flag waving for the sakes of any nation (as you may have gathered).

My opinions as expressed on Oxegen and what to expect are based on experience of the real world and a little analysis. You have no right to claim to represent anyone but yourself here (nor do I). I know plenty of people who feel similarly about such events as Oxegen but never used the royal “we” or “us”. This debate is turning ratty and into an argument – which I really don’t want. There are few enough Irish fans as it is.

My house, being on the northside - near the airport - might be too far for people to go after the gig. Town could be better - pubs should open till 1.30; THEN when I' properly pissed, ther'll be invites all round 'back to mine' :dead:

Its not absolutely confirmed yet, but since NO dont seem to be appearing in V festival in august, me and Feline thought we should pay Ireland a visit (again after 2002) - this time for a "good" cause .

At this moment, apart from waiting for our tickets to arrive by mail here, we are searching for air-tickets, hopefully we will find something not too expensive ;) . After that we will be set. So, talk to ya laters guys...

The ticket confirmation is sat in my hand right now. Flight is the 13.30 from Heathrow, gets me in to Dublin at 14.50. Costs twice as much as the gig!
