New Order live @ Coachella Festival - Indio (USA) - 2005.05.01

I'll be the first to post here....looking forward to my California trip....spend some time in LA, see the Order in the desert, and ponder whether or not i should drive up from LA to Oakland then down to Palm Springs....or just wait for NYC....decision, decisions, decisions....

May have one seat open in a car heading from Oakland to Palm Springs after the show....is any desperate for a ride and willing to kick in for gas.....just thought i'd make the offer.....

yes, only us idiots dare plan to drive from LA on the 28th for a show on the 29th only to turn around on the 29th or very early on the 30th to drive to a show that starts at 11:30am on the same morning.......

Well, the good news seems to be that the forecast for temperatures will be quite a bit less than last year's heatwave.

Good thing my new driver's license came in the mail yesterday. At the last concert I went to, I was denied a beer braclet because my license was expired.

So are we sure there is no Hooky dj set in Indio? I would hate to miss this.

I just got back from Coachella. I left right after New Order to beat the 100 thousand people at this thing.

But ok here is my story!

First Barney hurt his foot dancing in Oakland so he was in ruff shape for this show. No dancing! He even walked off the stage in BLT when he normally dances. Hope fully he will be ok for Chicago, but now I know why he stood still like a robot in Blue Monday at Oakland.

Anyways I get there at 12:30pm and notice there to nobody at the stage, so I go and get front row when Phil plays. After battling the sun all day, New Order take the stage at 7:35. I was happy to see atmosphere first as it was left off of Oakland due to time. After the song was over I screamed Phil, Phil, Phil and got him to wave at me!!! (Hightlight of the show for me) Barney then goes on to say He love Palm Spings and wants to move here, and asks is anybody has been to Manchester, then asks if they like it. When to crowd said no, he says "Right answer" Anyways I was having the time of my life. The crowd was great (No pushing) It was great I was front row and space around me to breathe, unlike Oakland that I was getting squished and bumbed all threw the show. (Thanks you Britts ;) )

It was funny because I could not hear the backing from where I was so in songs like Krafty I herd nothing in the chorus, and it still sounded great.

Barney was kinda in a foul mood because of his leg but sounded great, even if he screwed up Blt (missing the second chourus) And Peter was not very talkative but sounded great. Steve was Steve! And Phil was the only person who seemed happy. Even smiled while he was playing Hey Now. (Maybe because I kept chanting his name)

After Regret and the Photographers had to leave Peter said "Its time for the Photographers to leave so F**k off, Get the F**K out of here"

And Barney ended the show by saying "Sorry we could only play for one hour, and sorry for our bad mood tonight, but thats how it goes"

Overall great show!!! I had the time of my life!

And Big thanks to Al "Monster" Jarvis for telling me to go to the Left side of the stage! And for but Killing me and bumbing me this concert!

Hehe, after Hooky's photographer tirade, I loved it when Barney said something along the likes of, "You can take as many pictures you'd like of me" and did a pose. Was it before WFTSC where Barney said, "Oh look, there's a helicopter!"?

The sound was pretty bad (from where I was at least). But still worth it. I didn't expect the Coachella to be as uncrowded as it was. Had I known, I would've gotten there earlier to stake out on the front row. =/

About the pushing thing, it was pretty bad on the right side (The crowd is split down the center with a barricaded walkway). When "Transmission" started, it got REALLY bad, squished and smooshed beyond belief. Everytime I looked over to Phil's side, everyone looked comfortable and no one seemed to be pushing.

The show: brilliant. Almost even better that they were in foul moods.

Hooky's quote was "I've got these fucking photographers up in my tits. Fuck off, the lot of you." He was looking and pointing at specific photographers in the pit when he said it. Hilarious.

Part of the mood may have come from the fact that they had to follow on the heels of Gang of Four, who managed to pull out one of the most amazingly true performances of their career- but then, this isn't a Gang of Four board!

Back to the boys.

Atmosphere. They opened the freaking set with it. Love Will Tear Us Apart. Hooky dedicated it to Steve, followed by "you bastard."

Bernard had sprained/injured his foot and mentioned it a couple of times during the show, i.e., he announced that they were going to do a dance song and asked that we take care of the dancing because he could not. Enter: "Bizarre Love Triangle."

The sound engineer messed up the bass in the mix for the first couple songs but got it straightened out. Stuff from "Siren" included "Waiting for the Siren's Call," "Hey Now What You Doing," "Krafty," and "Jetstream" (with the Scissor Sister vocal on tape).

Only "Crystal" showed up from Get Ready, but it was massively well performed and well received. Maybe the best song of the night.

"Blue Monday" got the attention of just about everyone at Coachella when they wrapped the set with it, but then, it's "Blue Monday" and they're New Order so no doubt.

Feeling totally fortunate to have seen this great band tonight.

I'll post some pics for you in a minute.

Put on the sun block, and still got a decent burn out of it all today. Yeah, I think Jim got the setlist right, Atmosphere was good, I don't recall any "whoops" from Barney on that one.

There did seem to be a couple of sound problems, from Barney saying that Phil's chimes were too loud on Atmosphere, to the fact that I think Barney's mike cut out a bit at the beginning of BLT, I think Hooky had a gripe about something, but it was a long day out there.

Blue Monday sounded really good, I thought, the expressions on the face of the people around me hearing it live easily made my umpteenth listening as good as the first, there were some really happy people singing and dancing along.

Figured there was gonna be a crunch up front, I was close to the front for Gang Of Four ( who truly rocked) and upon the end of their show, there wasn't much of an exodus of people, and there were lots of others staking their postions. Wasn't gonna fight the crowds anymore, so Brian, Rinna and I staked out a good postion in the middle, and enjoyed the show there. sorry Churchy, I figured that was gonna happen.

Guys, returned from Coachella about an hour ago. Stayed for NIN as well.

Perhaps I shall be the one being pessimistic about the concert. Sadly enough, it was NIN that ended our (wife and myself) day on the high note, not New Order. We were very disappointed that Temptation, TF, Love V and She Lost Control weren't played. Since the setlist from the Oakland show was posted, we were really looking forward to Love V and SLC.

Firstly, we should have organized a meet up with the British lads. I couldn't find them with their union jack anywhere. Being in a group of New Order would have been more fun jumping and singing along. We were in a crowd that stood still through eveyrthing except, BLT and Blue Monday. Sam (the Happy one) did approach me when we were watching Gang of Four. He helped us moved closer to the barricade. Thanks Sam!

Secondly, maybe it was because we were too close to Hooky's bass amps, we couldn't hear Barney's voices at all. At times, it was difficult to figure out which verses Barney was singing. And yup, the bass line in one of the songs was a little distorted. Like one octave higher or something. I remember being this close at AreaOne 4 years ago and had a lot of fun singing along.

Thirdly, the NIN fans were rough. Very rough in fact. Even half way through the New Order gig, they pushed and shoveled their way in. Half the time during the New Order gig, I had to concentrate on staying upright and preventing my wife from being squashed by pple all around. Once New Order left the stage, all hell broke loose. I had to lift up my wife above the crowd and the security in front carried her over the barricade. I joined a bit later. For that, we lost a cap, a cell phone and a camera. Plus, my pair of glasses is broken too.

I told myself that this is not how I wanted the night to end. So we watched NIN from a further distance and the show was spectacular. But the more aggressive NIN fans are the ones who really annoyed me.

Anyway, don't want to bore everyone with all the nitty details. Now, we really want to attend the Chicago and NY shows but we didn't plan anything. So maybe next time.

That's why I hate festvals! Come on guys, play proper concerts not these stupid festivals.

Tell me about it. Thing is I attended AreaOne and that was a festival too and it wasn't too bad. My wife and I are fans of NIN nonetheless. We just didn't think that the crowd was this rough. We have bruises and aching muscles over now.

I must admit it wasn't the best concert I have attended. But at the very least, we got to meet New Order in person on Wednesday. So that sort of neutralized the New Order experience.

very sorry to hear that about being upfront, it was exactly all those aggressive NIN fans that made me skip their set, the best news, in a twisted way, is that they probably baked all day while wearing their black clothes in the hot sun. I just wonder how they would've reacted if NO had played Dead Souls (I know the possiblities are zilch and nada).

The NIN fans were atrocious. Right after NO ended I thought I would squirm my way towards the front, which I got about a good few rows ahead. Then everyone was pushing to the front so I decided to elbow people in their chests to get em away from me, but I took advantage of this by squirming farther and farther to the front :P . I got all the way to the third row middle, when I just said fuck it. NIN sounded like shit, absolute shit, for the first few songs except for March of the Pigs, which I could have enjoyed more if I didn't have to elbow all the arses near me to keep from being pushed to the ground. So I eventually made my way to the barricade and hopped it onto the hands of a couple of security officials, but my foot got stuck in the crowd, and since it was so packed I could not get it out of the crowd, but after a good minute I was able to get it out, and I left. I was already exhausted before since I was hopping around and slightly dancing for Miss Kittin hours earlier (she had the best performance by far out of all the artists that I saw), and thus I was trashed and had a headache from the potsmokers around me during the Miss Kittin performance. I walked around a bit, then went back towards the main stage to hear NIN play 'Hurt', which turned out to sound like drivel to me, but 'Head Like a Hole' sounded ridiculously good. The new NIN song sounded bad because they failed to be able to make that bouncy synth sound that is very prevalent in the studio single. After all this, I went to the Sahara tent, and they rocked the tent with 'Firestarter'. So IMO, Miss Kittin and The Prodigy were the best acts to see, and I guess you could add Ben Watt to that list as well.

Isn't the key point here that if you like sub-adolescent goth gibberish like NIN then you get what you deserve?? Or have we recently entered some kind of parallel dimension where Reznor and co. aren't a pile of stale wank???

As much as I hate to say to say it, New Order was pretty uninsprired. I've seen 'em a few times before and this performance was phoned in. It's a shame. Not like this show was at the end of a long tour of anything. In fact, Sumner even said at the end of the set, "We're sorry we weren't more animated, but that's life." Dance injuries aside, I think they could have played better. They were, like "Ok. We're going to play Blue Monday now (checking watch)."

Too much new stuff too, in my opinion. New Order doesn't need to push the new record that hard. But then again, I'm hoping for a setlist straight out of 1989. I don't know, if you're pressed for time and doing a festival show, you'd think you'd bust out the hits. One, because you are likely to have a big draw of fans who are there just to basically see you, and two, with a festival crowd, chances are they're not going to know the new songs anyway. I'd have traded 3 new songs for just ONE song from 'Technique' or 'Lowlife.' Or even 'Temptation' for chrissakes.

Which leads me to another point, have they forgotten how to play the songs off 'Technique' or have they just lost the sequencer files and are too lazy to reprogram them? Anyone?

I think the most interesting bands at festivals are the smaller ones that have something to prove. The Arcade Fire, British Sea Power and MIA were all psyched to be there and it showed.

As far as NIN goes, yeah, unfortunately, agressive bands tend to bring that element out, whether the people are fans or not. That's one reason why festivals can be truly lame. My friend's girlfriend almost got trampled just trying to get out of the main stage crowd after New Order ended and NIN hadn't even started playing yet.

If they NIN types wanted to see something truly anti-social, they should have made your way over to the Wolf Eyes tent where the band did nothing but make pure noise for 45 minutes. Those wisecracks at Pitchforkmedia even described Wolf Eyes as "making music that makes you want to kill yourself after listening to it." You'd think that would be right up the typical NIN fan's alley - makes "Hurt" looks like a Kylie Minogue tune in comparison. Not like you can even understand what Wolf Eyes is even singing/screaming about anyway, mind you, but it doesn't matter.

They've upgraded their sequencer technology quite a bit since 1989, and no longer use floppies and an Emulator. They haven't reprogrammed most of them (I think Fine Time may be the only survivor, and they haven't played that for some time, so it is reasonable to assume they've binned it at long last!). Roger Lyons from Lionrock is their programmer, and he hadn't been working on the Technique songs last I heard.

Yeah, was great meeting you in the pit, for lack of a better term. I should have listened to the advice I gave Al who told somebody to go to the Philside, would have been a smoother time there.

May have been because we were below the PA system, and Bernard's vocals are "filled" for him through his headphones. Everybody knows the words anyway. :)

Oh my god, I got caught in that maelstorm as well. Me and a few like-minded individuals made our way through the hoards out the back, but I was definitely getting close to passing out from the press of NINnies pushing to get in. Sorry to hear about your damages, luckily all I lost was a bit of pride having been teased by fools that knew not what happened.

In NO's defense, 3/4 of the American gigs will be 'proper concerts', the last time being in 1993...the rough part was that the Coachella date was the one first known about so lots of folks committed before the other dates were announced.

Yeah, the opening synth sustained showed up in Oakland as well. Don't recall hearing it before that in any New Order rendition of Tranny.

Yeah, you're right. The set lost steam after HNWYD. I wonder if Warners is forcing them to play all the new stuff. WFTSC and even HNWYD are at least decent live, but Krafty and especially Jetstream weren't that great (Hooky's bass was remarked to be all over the place on that one). I wonder if the band react to the audience and if it had something to do with all the people into the following act not responding.

Too much new stuff too, in my opinion. New Order doesn't need to push the new record that hard.

Maybe a tactical mistake, maybe not enough other tracks rehearsed, maybe Warners put in a kind word to promote the latest album, maybe they just wanted to.

Yeah, more than one person's noticed that BS is increasingly resembling William Shatner, which makes Phil Spock (imagine pointy, elven-type ears), Hooky Scotty, and Stephen Mr. Drum Sulu. Star Order, anybody?

Really, I started as someone going forward without pushing, for i squirmed my way to the front and saying pardon and excuse me :p. I strated pushing when people started pushing me, and I just happened to push my way to the front. :D

new Orders set was dull and unispired though i agree with Green that the version of Blue Monday the played was the best live version i've ever heard. Unbelievable outro by Peter and Phil. I've got to get a recording.

Most important thing i learned at Coachella:

NIN fans are complete and total ASSWIPES who have no place on earth. Who the fuck wears BLACK to a show in 90+ degree weather, in Black vinyl pants (boys) or black ripped tights (girls)..not to mention the knee high black boots, the safety pins etc. Seriously, if this refers to anything YOU had on, then yes, you are an IDIOT who was being laughed at by many, many people both Saturday and Sunday. I overheard at least 20 people commenting on how funny and sadly humiliating it must be to buy into the whole NIN/Goth way of life. If your life sucks that bad, kill yourself now. My take on yesterdays performance.....

Since I had my one year old daugther with me and my wife we opted to stand on the platform constructed on the right side of the stage about 70 yards back.I didn't want to battle anyone up front and I am glad I didn't with a baby in my arms. I have had my fair share of up front NO shows in the past. So from the platform was just fine especially with the video screens. On a sour note I would have to say that the sound was bad I have no idea what was happening.It would be good one minute and then horrible the next it sounded almost like the wind wasrunning the mixer with its gusts. On a positive note that was the best version of Blue monday I have ever heard and the only song were the sound wasn't fucked up.To me it sounded like the original studio version with kyile minogue vocals for the first 20 seconds of the song.This was a pretty good show but nothing to really jump and down for. It was nice to hear the JD songs and my Daughter was throughly enjoying ever minute of the show.Some of you who were there may have seen a little baby with a New Order tank top on. She seemed to be a hit due the 75 plus pictures that were taken of her through out the day and night.Hopefully the next time she gets to see NO it will be a bit better.......

The Bravery and Bloc Party too. 2004 produced a good crop of new bands...many of whom should be sending royalty checks to New Order... :)

I only went to day 2, so I missed Bloc Party. I would have liked to have seen them. I missed the Bravery too - I think we were taking a much needed break in the shade at that time. I've only heard a couple of Bravery, but they were pretty good. The teenagers mentioned above saw the Bravery and said they were awesome. It's true - they should send royalty checks to New Order, and U2 for that matter. hehe

I realize I'm new here, so this is a cheap .02, but my .02 nonetheless...

First off, I really love New Order. Maybe as much now as I ever have. I'm 36 and went through my junior high and high school years with New Order weaving its way through my memories. Just to qualify.

That said, I cannot believe the trend here that seems to be against their new stuff. "Waiting for the Siren's Call" is such a feather in their cap, a CD that grows on me even more every time I hear it. The same thing happened with "Get Ready," and although I've played "Get Ready" into the ground I can still put it on today and totally get into it.

I think New Order has accomplished something monumental, to still be producing work that is pure New Order and (for me) stands up well with the best stuff in their catalog.

It baffles me a bit that one would complain about not hearing this or that song when that song has been performed a million times by New Order since 1983.

"Hey Now What You Doing," for those of you who weren't there, was excellent and for my money "Jetstream" was just vintage New Order. Those songs deserve to build an audience because they're very strong New Order songs (IMHO).

It's cool, it's just that reading this thread proves to me that companies such as ClearChannel, who buy up radio stations and make them all sound the same, playing the same "hits" because "people want to hear what they already know" are right after all. And how fucking sad.

Well, let me clear that up. I don't want to hear the 'hits.' I can't listen to any station above 91.9 on the dial. Prententious, I know, but I hate big radio rotation and big radio commercials.

I could really go without hearing BLT or Blue Monday live ever again. When you're a band with a 20 year+ history, there's just so much ground to cover. I just want to hear more older stuff - maybe even changed around to sound new. Don't need to hear "Perfect Kiss" like the record or anything - Change it up on the fly onstage and make it interesting. That's all I'm asking.

There's some nice stuff on the new record, don't get me wrong, but compared to the older records, it's just not as strong, in my opinion. I know the band is in a different place and all - I don't expect or want them to replicate "Technique" again, but it's hard not to compare it to the older stuff.

I had a fantastic time in the desert. I wore proudly my NOOL shirt (Green)- but only after the wind cooled it down. Chatted with Green and The Happy One for a while.
I wish I could have met the UK ambassadors.
My wife, being somewhat short, wasn't up for a wade to the front, so we stayed in the middle. We chose the wrong side, I guess, as I think I saw a herd of bouncing vikings on the other side of the barricade. As far as the show- I think that may be the best version of LWTUA I've ever heard. Top Notch. Atmosphere- bad sound, great toon. No real surprises, but after the great stuff in SF (Love Vigilantes, Run Wild), what do you expect? For a festival set, it was quite good. The audio mix in the front was shit, but when we walked back toward the sound boards during Blue Monday, I found that it sounded GREAT back there, with less little NIN prick fans, too. Did Barney really hurt himself surfing (Shark attack???), or was it dancing in SF? Time to sleep....

My complaint was more geared towards playing all the new stuff being played concurrently, and not even the strongest songs on the new album. Like why no "Who's Joe?" f'instance? Ah, well, playing an abbreviated set by necessity is going to be a lose-lose proposition no matter how you slice it.

i lived near Trent's studio in New Orleans and heard first hand accounts of very young (15-17) year old girls who were invited to his place and then persuaded with alcohol and drugs to be a little more sexual than they expected. i've been to his studio a couple times and talked to him on many occasions so i feel like i have a good bit of knowledge to make the statements i made.

We're definitely on the same page there. "Who's Joe" is a brilliant opener and frankly if I wrote the setlist I'd have opened the show with that, not "Atmosphere."

Of course if I wrote the setlist I'd have killed the staff at the mixing boards with my bare hands. I saw I don't know how many bands at Coachella, many of them from right next to the speakers up front (including Nine Inch Nails) and every single one of them sounded killer. New Order sounded like shite for three + songs. How long does it take to figure it out?

Regarding the sound @ the main stage. I've been to Coachella every year (this was the last) and I know exactly where to be the best sound. Here's the problem; every year goldenvoice has a company called Ratsound provide the main P.A. system, and each year they prove more incompetent. The sound sucks every year. Every fucking year. Thousands have complained but nothing is ever done. This year was rare; the sound actually sucked at every stage at the whole festival, not just the main stage. And... Hooky's bass problems were form a faulty radio, it wasn't the engineers fault. The band sounded good from where I was.

(I am a sound engineer, working mostly in entertainment and corporate events. What follows is my response to the insinuation that the sound company was at fault for the problems at Coachella) Rat Sound is one of the best sound companies in the world. www.ratsound.com will give you a list of the clients they have worked for, including a list of EVERY SHOW they have ever done, dating back to 1981 in the SoCal punk scene. Dave Rat, the owner, is the audio engineer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, and others. He is very experienced and knowledgeable, and has earned the respect of nearly everyone in the live audio world. The sound system they had at the Coachella Stage this year (and in years past) was a V-DOSC system, made by a French company (I can't remember their name). The V-DOSC is a world-class system, as good as any system in use anywhere for this type of event. The mixing consoles they were using were world-class, also. This was not a bad PA system. In fact, the quality in general was fantastic. I thought Gang of Four sounded really good, and most of the time, New Order did, too.

Now: the 'Bass' problem with the New Order Set. I, too was down in front of the Hook-Meister, and I thought that the low-end was going to rip my head off. I blame this on two things: being in front of the bass amp 'Salfords Back' and being somewhat underneath the PA cluster. From all accounts, the sound was great from the mixing desks (of course) to the back of the field. I don't think that Rat Sound was at fault in any way for this, it is just something that happens at these types of concerts- it can't be perfect for everyone. But if the promoter (Goldenvoice) had spent more $$$, well, then, I'm sure the problem could be solved, with more front-fill speakers, etc. Just expect to see an increase in your ticket price to pay for it. 20 years ago (or even 10), it would have taken 4 times as much sound gear to get 70% the quality of what we are used to now.
I was just happy to see the Order again, and to be able to chat with some of my audio, lighting and video buddies that I have met over the last few years.

Hi all :) I think everyone already did a good job of recounting the details of NO's performance and the rest of the festival, I just wanted to share my joy of finally seeing New Order perform live with folks who would understand. :D I too was surprised they played as many new songs as they did, which made me glad I'd ordered the CD from the UK a month ago rather than waiting until it was released in the US... There were lots of other songs I would have liked to see them play as well, but they did only have an hour, and really it didn't matter much to me what they played. :)

My boyfriend and I only went for Sunday, and we came a bit later in the day as well, so we caught The Bravery (who we hadn't heard before, but were pretty good, despite some equipment trouble), NIN (we also were rather disappointed with their set), and The Prodigy (who rocked in a big way). We were kinda disappointed that so many good acts were all on at the same time, but I guess that's bound to happen at these kind of events.

Now only two more days until New York...!!

I agree with Tracey, no matter what they played I was pretty happy. There were certainly noticeable sound prob's but being a student of ltd fundage and a sucker for the rumour mill, I jumped on the first (and final?) opportunity to watch the boys live. So hopefully this PhD thing will be worth it and NO will not retire when I get a real job

Coachella:

Couldn’t get as close as I wanted for this one, but I was considerably closer than I had been for Bauhaus the previous evening (sidenote: Peter Murphy dedicated “Dark Entries,” the last song, to Ian Curtis). (Had also briefly met with Sam, Al Jarvis, and Johnny Giles, and Andy at Coachella the previous day, who all seemed to be in good spirits, including Andy who has been so gracious as to call me a “septic come lately” before online.) Had watched Gang of Four with Allan (Green) and my gf Stephanie before New Order’s set (Tristan was there somewhere also, as we’d met up with him earlier that day), then Steph and I moved in a bit closer until we were maybe 50-70 feet from the stage. They turned the video screens on for this one, so we got a good spectacle even with plenty of people in front of us. I was surprised at how many people showed up for this one, most of whom just wanted to hear “the hits,” but that’s to be expected from a bunch of festival-going septics.

Atmosphere: Nice to hear this one after it was dropped from the Oakland setlist due to time (presumably). The sound was fucked up on this one and some other songs, but at least Barney didn’t whoop around a lot, having apologized for tearing his foot ligament (couldn’t make out his opening comments…something about surfing or his injury?). Still not the best intro song for a festival…too sedate and stately.

WFTSC: Me and my gf were the only ones around singing along to the new songs, but it still sounded great, even if the crowd weren’t too into it. At least I got to yell the lyrics into the frat boy types standing in front of me. Tee hee.

Regret: The crowd finally got really warmed up and all of the idiot girls around me and Steph were singing along to this. At some point between songs Hooky told the photographers to all fuck off, leaving Barney saying, “You can take all the pictures of me you want” or something to that tune.

Transmission: Good opening synth sound again…the crowd seemed to enjoy it.

Hey Now What You Doing/Krafty/Jetstream: Low crowd response. Barney kept saying “Hey, what do you know…another song from our new album.” A block of new stuff wasn’t what the crowd wanted, but at least I enjoyed it. HNWYD had some missed cues.

BLT: Barney did his best to dance around a bit, but he was clearly in pain and couldn’t swivel too much. Of course, your typical audience loved it. Barney missed his cue for the last lyrics and the song ended a line short.

LWTUA: Pretty good reception, with a nice singalong for the chorus. Hooky dedicated it to David (Sultan), then told him to fuck off. I laughed.

Crystal: Not the biggest crowd pleaser, but they wouldn’t have recognized when Barney missed his cues on this one anyway.

Blue Monday: Barney added a bit more keys to the opening of this one, and the Kylie sample made its appearance at the beginning as well (though it seemed to confuse most people). Barney was looking very much in pain from the hurt foot by this time and just stood still cringing for most of the song, then left the stage while Phil and Hooky finished the song. Hooky kept playing the bassline for quite some time after the song was over. Sounded great! And of course the crowd loved it, but fuck those people.

Overall, a fairly toned down show compared to Oakland. No Temptation or True Faith, which no doubt disappointed some people, as did the relative overabundance of new material given the one-hour time set time. Lots of missed cues and sound problems. Barney looking pissy and injured the whole time, as did everyone else. Mentioned at the end that they were sorry for not being in a better mood tonight but that’s how it goes. If I didn’t know any better, judging by all the missed cues, sound problems, foul moods, and unfamiliar songs, this could’ve been a gig from the mid-80’s. Or not. No surprises for this one. It was a great pleasure to watch the whole show with my lovely girlfriend at my side. A nice dessert after the far superior Oakland show.

i guess the whole bass issue i had was a product of being SO close. im glad i had my plugs in, my whole body felt the low end. eventually Hooky did plug his bass in to a hard line after he kept losing the signal on the other side of the stage.

Good summation David, the next afternoon, when I woke up my brother handed me the USA Today with their Saturday Coachella coverage. They had a fabulous pic of Peter Murphy's stage entrance; made me wish that I'd been their for the set now. If you haven't seen it, it's the third pic in this series....

Coachella

The guys from Goldenvoice really sucked as* on this one by giving NO only an hour to play.

I was happy as sh*t to be able to catch the guys pay in Indio because who knows if I will have the opportunity to see a full performance. I think WFTSC is the most cohesive mental effort that defines who these guys are in relation to the mentallity of Joy Division since Power, Corruption and Lies. Some may disagree but this is just my fuc*kin opinion. I'm entitled right. Not to negate anything inbetween but WFTSC is fuc*ing brilliant. The whole show was a highlight. The whole experience was surreal. We were standing about 6'clock from the stage and moved to a more open area about 9'clock from the stage. The crowds wre much more lax this year and the west side of the stage is usually less congested. Here are some reactions;

ATMOSPHERES - I was elated as mofo to hear this song. You hear it in your head. Now just imagine it in front of you. Till now the only version I have to listen to is of Les Bains Douches. I have been really lovin the keys on this song as aof late so as an opener it could not have been better for me. Sound problems did not effect this song. The most notable sound problems were during the second song -Waiting for the Sirens Call.

REGRET - by the way the weather situation was perefect for the performance. The breeze just right. Dust storms were in full effect but were removed from the event like a protective shield. It set a perfect setting. Sound problems were cleared up for the most part and the crowd seemed happy to just be in the moment enjoying a favorite band of theirs.

TRANSMISSION - Hooks influence on the vocals for this song was strongly evident. One of my favorite songs and in perfect form as live versions heard on Les Bains Douches. These guys definantly play this song as if Ian was still on stage. I realize Hook always song backup vocals on this song but he fuc*in makes that Shi* flow. I listen to the version on Les Bains Douches and Hooks vocal are now even more defining in the chorus even over Ians at this concert. Will not forget this concert or this performance.

Hey Now What you Doing, Krafty, Jetstream - Good to hear the new songs.

Love will Tear Us Apart - What can be said. The band's definative radio song. The beginning drum beat and bass were right on cue. The keys were sic as hell. Everybody was completly absorbed by the moment.

Blue Monday - Rounded out a great performance.

I think the guys from New Order realize that they do not need to escape Joy Division. It is what they were and who they are. Waiting for the Sirens call is these guys in pristine form of who these guys are as people. I am glad they did not play some washed up greatest hits set and these guys do not have to prove shitte to anybody.

Everyone gets 1 hour to play on the stages. That's just the way it is at Coachella. Goldenvoice has done a tremendous job with the Coachella festival since 1999 by bringing in all sorts of acts from a variety of backgrounds. You may be purely a New Order fan, which is your own right, but don't be so ready to attribute blame and not realize what a tremendous festival this is and how difficult it is to organize so many bands and acts in one venue.

I've enjoyed reading all the Coachella thoughts. I've been a NO fan for at least 20 years, so was emotionally prepared to see them/ share them at a smorgasbord festival. Honestly, it was refreshing to see the rawness of their act-- Barney's pain, the sound troubles, etc. It reminded me of the robots we are presented with everyday, the lip synchers, the backup tapes, the photoshopped untalented mavens, the people who don't even bother to play their instruments. Living in LA, I loved how old and normal they looked-- un-plastic surgeried, pale as anything, just so real to their Manchester roots I just loved it. A slick show may have scared me. Does this make any sense? They're just Brits at the pub, loving their football. They're not tabloid fodder crap, they haven't married plastic blond bimbos, they have in fact fallen off their pub stools a few times, but it's all good. Imagine a slick, Clear Channel Marketing Ready moneymaking version of Atmosphere coming out of the speakers. Would it scare you? And I respect playing us the new ones. What balls or bollocks I should say! They're basically saying Fuck you frat boy fans! because we (fans) all appreciated the new songs. I've said enough, of course.

Not true. Nine Inch Nails, who were on directly after New Order, had an extra 15 minutes for their set as did Coldplay the day before.

I finally got around to reading all the posts abotu Coachella.

I agree with almost everything, the postive and negative. Yes it was a rough set, not like My Boys up here in WA- Love Vigilantes playing a small club. But that roughness did provide a nice realness to the show... Barney is a real guy, playing up there for us through his pain (I have had bad sprained ankles, I feel his pain!)....

I listened to NO when I was a teen, and I didn't even know who they were or anything at the time. So this show was the chance for me to fufill myself in a way I never could. It was amazing in that alone.

Thanks to everyone who was there to share in my moment. :) I love dancing and singing along with 20k other people.
