Yes, this entirely off-topic, but given that BCD is wildly anal (good title for a porn flick, that!) and to 'help' keep this forum alive this goes here.
Anyways, am applying for a job in Portsmouth: what's the city like, would I be making a mistake moving there, is is a shithole??? Or, am I just right in thinking anywhere's better than Aberdeen??

I like Pompey a lot, and the surrounding area. Will probably end up down that way myself. You'd better ask Old Blue, Gordie or Gary about this neck of the woods. Best not wear a red and white striped shirt round there though!

Portsmouth is OK, certainly not a shithole. Like everywhere it has it's good and it's bad. Southsea is nice - lots of pubs, Gunwharf Quay and three good gig venues within reach (Guildhall, Pyramids and The Wedgewood Rooms) The north of the island isn't quite so good, but property is cheaper. Avoid Somerstown like the plague.
Where is the job? University? Best of luck!

Both Portsmouth and Southampton have premium rent due to the number of students, both being university towns. If you look off-island the prices come down accordingly (Cosham, Havant, Drayton, Waterlooville)
As for where Pompey comes from, it depends who you believe. Either a French warship ("Le Pompee") was captured in 17-something and moored at the harbour entrance as guard ship, or it comes from a group of 18th century Portsmouth based sailors who scaled Pompey's Pillar in Alexandria and became known as "The Pompey Boys".
Going to have to disagree with the general view here! I got a job in Portsmouth (at the Uni too) in 1996 and moved there from my beloved North West. I lasted 11 months!
Bloody hated it. Knew I was in for a rough ride when I went into a chippy on my first night there and asked for a chip barm cake. She looked at me like I was mad. Explained what it was. She looked at me like I was even madder. So I said just give me chips and gravy. Any town that doesn't do gravy with chips is just WRONG.
City was ok, didn't like the people at all. Rent was high, especially if you don't want to share. The only decent thing about it was that you could do the P&O ferry to Cherbourg for a tenner as a walk on passenger but P&O have stopped sailing from there now.
Hope you enjoy it more than me. Funnily enough I was so desperate to escape that I applied for a job at Aberdeen Uni!

Well, I ain't even got an interview yet, but Jake has put me off a bit....always thought a bloke from Stoke would struggle down in t'beautiful south. Though I really want to get out of here - seagulls the size of fucking dinosaurs. The job is shite, too....
But then I would say that.
You do get a few good bands play at the guilhall, wedgewood rooms and Pyramid centre. The Isle of wight makes a good day trip.
Pompey is worth checking out if you can get down for a weekend.

Fradders, they are expanding University of Greenwich right now into the new Medway Campus (my house value has gone up 10% since the announcement!) - bound to be some film studies lecturer jobs. I shall be applying for IT lecturer post in all probability.
Mate of mine was a lecturer at Portsmouth for a few years, loved every minute of it. Pompey is called a northern city on the south coast so might not be the culture shock you think.
I've been down there a few times, always had a good laugh. The kind of place you could live in.
I live in potsmouth now and its good but not great, pretty similar to any other coastal town in the south. grew up in the medway towns.it is not a nice place.

Medway's alright provided you lower your expectations of life. It isn't a place I would want to bring up children.

Gary actually spends most of his time in what-he-lovingly-calls "Scum".
That's cos he's a tight cnut and he gets free rent at his bird's gaff.
This Portsmouth / Southampton rivalry gets a bit confusing sometimes as neither side has ever come up with anything more imaginative than "Scum".

Fabulous gig, to me the best of the 84 summer dates. Great set, great performance, big scrap in the audience. Watched this one from the balcony in the Guildhall as had picked up a bang on my knee earlier in the day.

The football is sh*te. There are jobs in Portsmouth? It is a sh*thole - the best thing about Portsmouth is the boat out.
