What's disappointing is that virtually no 'Vikings' can concede that maybe the critics of the audience behaviour have a point. Perhaps what is acceptable at an outdoor festival is overstepping the mark at an indoor gig? I don't suggest that everyone stands in silent reverence (but also - unlike Tim, I don't think it's shallow to do so), I just think the attitude of "I've paid my money, I'm going to do what the fuck I want" is ignorant and rude. Obviously there's no compulsion to watch bands you don't want to watch, and there's nothing wrong with cheering for *your* band in between sets, but spoiling people's enjoyment of *their band* or New Order, of whom NOOLers don't have a monopoly, is pretty dumb and boorish. IF that's what happened. I was there for New Order only, but let's just suppose, based on what others have said, that it might.

Well this Viking was only in for New Order, so it would have been impossible to heckle any other acts with the shouts of New Order.....which I wouldn't have done anyway, we only do that when the Order are getting ready to take the stage or they are already on it.
The disappointing fact about the original post was that it stemmed from a presumed post on some other bands website (a band I've never heard of until now) that the Vikings are all cunts and our behaviour was out of order.
The first post here named moronic pissed up fans, there you go, no matter whether it's music or football, there's always a few daft buggers who couldn't give a flying shite.
Having never met the great man himself, I couldn't tell you what he thought of the fans that dived down the front, but from what I've read in his interviews and always kept an eye on his festive fifties etc.... I can hazard a guess he'd be up the stairs pissing himself that such a mountain has been made from such a little molehill.
I was there for New Order, I have no qualms about that, we knew they were gonna do Joy Division and pay homage to Peel - I thought that was what it was all about. I had a great day meeting all my mates, and lads n lassies I'd never met before, plus we heard two Joy Division songs by New Order that had never been aired before.
So thank you New Order and just as importantly thank you JP.
Having read the thread on the BSP website I get the feeling that underlying a lot of the angst is the old Joy Divison v New Order thing. You know what I'm refering to, the moody cnuts in anoraks who can't see beyond May 1980 and who regard NO playing JD songs as some kind of sacrielege.
One post even suggests that those of us down the front (myself included, just right of Hooky) were somehow bemused/dissapointed by the Joy Divison set and that we weren't even that familiar with the material. I laughed out loud at that one. Nobody I spoke to could believe their luck that we got Shadowplay and Warsaw. We'll take that over Jetsream and Blue Monday any day of the week.
And all this from the forum of a band who sound like Prefab fucking Sprout!!!!!!
Just read the Observer review posted on another thread - it appears the drunken louts who follow New Order ALL OVER THE FUCKING WORLD simply cannot appreciate the beauty of Joy Division's music, and are more interested in knocking out Barney's teeth. Philistines, the lot of them.

Am I alone in thinking that Wednesday's night's rowdiness was the tamest seen at a New Order gig indoors in this country, for what seems like an eternity? Anyone remember what happened down the front at Wembley when they attempted to sanction everyone in seats then? There was, what, fifty(?) people dancing during New Order's set on Wednesday, nothing more. Read Jim Reilly's comments elsewhere to see how disappointed he was being sat near the back, where no one even moved.
Quiller, you've made your point. Why you felt the need to post this two days after the event, I don't know. I'd perhaps have more respect if you'd 'told people off' at the time rather than complaining here after the event, but that's just me.

Mate, the mood I'm in I'd be up for 15 pints: unfortunately (and despite my best efforts to update my profile) I'm now back in Stoke. I will be back up in that shithole Aberdeen at some point because there's at least one very pretty student who I miss in a totally unprofessional way. Otherwise, I'll see YOU at the next New Order gig. Beer will be on me.

I can't comment on the allegations of people shouting out for NO when other bands were on - I was in the pub with the rest of the people from here!

OK, sorry - my mistake. I didn't read any of the BSP comments first hand.
Tricia and I left the pub early as she didn't want to miss The Fall. We got there in time to see the last 30 seconds of their set. We were amazed by the number of empty seats, but stayed because she didn't want to miss SFA (her favourite band). I actually enjoyed seeing acts that I'd only heard on Peel's shows, especially Misty In Roots.
Neither of us yelled for New Order during anyone else's set, we actually forsook our seats and stood at the back the whole time, as it provided easier access for our frequent bar trips.
During New Order's set, we danced around at the back (as much as my bad back would let me!) otherwise, I'd have been at the front, being a 'hooligan' with the others. We still had a good view of the proceedings and enjoyed every last minute.
We had a great time meeting other fans in the Mulberry, but wanted to be at the gig just for the 'event' - even though MY sole reason was really to see New Order. When my good chum Al Ferrier texted me to say that NO were going to play a JD set, I was absolutely delighted - far from disappointed!
We enjoyed the whole evening, met loads of really lovely people - both NO fans and non-NO fans and wished the whole thing would have gone on longer.
The whole 'fans misbehaving' thing has been blown completely out of proportion - boisterous enjoyment at the front of a gig? Some people obviously weren't around for the late 70's/early 80's punk gigs, etc! That's what it's all about and most bands would be happy that their fans showed their appreciation. And not everyone jumping around at the front was a 'NewOrderOnline' member or even a 'Viking' - that's like saying that all people with Mohawk haircuts are 'Exploited' fans - a wild generalisation and wholly inaccurate!
We even continued the fun on the train back home - the best train journey in ages - 40 or so people in a carriage - all chatting, all happy and joking together - how society should be in that usually elusive Utopian world.
Respect to all who attended the gig, for whatever reason - money for a good cause.
Anyway, we enjoyed all the bands we saw, to a varying degree, and I'm sure that the great JP would have loved every minute too. God bless him and New Order too.

No-one could shout 'N-O' during Venetian Snares because of that guy's power and craziness; that was admirable. Anyone could shout 'N-O' during Super Furry Testicles because it was snoozeville compared to what was next...
Peely was certainly anti-establishment, as, I would suggest, were the actions of the more impassioned NO fans amongst us. Therefore Peely would admire us!
I think NO fans need to be given a bit more respect... No-one stood up for any of the other artists unless they were TOLD to.
NO-ONE sat down THROUGHOUT the NO gig... tells you something doesn't it?
