The Viking pins are unique; usually a different one for each gig; given out on a first come first served basis by the incredibly generous Al Jarvis (& co).

'The Vikings' is just a phrase for NO fans who go to NO gigs whenever they can; no mysterious hand shakes or lamb slaughtering required (sorry Jamie Oliver!) for membership. They are also an incredibly friendly and welcoming band of dudes and dudettes.

Glad to hear it was a top class gig and that everyone had a superlovey evening - sorry I wasn't there; I was a single parent with no babysitters last night...

Was born on the wrong side of the pond and was too young at the time to be able to go to anything. My friend saw them at Aragon Ball Room in Chicago this past summer and said it was fantastic!

A Cracking Gig - totally soaked and exhausted afterwards ..

Good to meet some of you in the pub beforehand - there were some nice lasses in too, which is a bonus ....

Al, would love a pin, Manchester gonna be my first NO gig....and cannot wait. Been watching Finsbury Park dvd all week Mmmm......now what should I wear..... Stranglers t-shirt maybe

A great gig, the band seemed in good humour were well up for it and there didn't seem to be too many glitches.

I thought the sound sucked chunks, it just rumbled at pieces.

It was interesting that the gig really kicked off from True Faith onwards and left the encore purely JD. I had never heard Warsaw and found it hard to take in but it was good to see. I thought that She's Lost Control was stunning.

If they can play a remix version of True Faith why can't they handle Perfect Kiss? Also I thought they may play some new material don't they have another album to release next year?

Where does the link between NO and Vikings originate.

the earliest I ever read the term was in NME or Melody Maker, and it was Barney refering to Hooky as a "half breed viking twat". Next time I came accross it, was them playing the theme from the movie "the vikings" as intro/outro/encore-gap-fill in 87 ( I think).

So what's the particular link that gets the traveling circus it's name?

And do they (we-ish?) have berserkers?

I thought it was to do with the film theme - one of Hooky's faves?? I think they started to use it in 1985?

It's simply from the film, no more, no less. It was a vague idea for an enamel badge for a few of us who did some gigs in Europe in 2002. Monday is my step from 20 year served virtual viking to real baby viking....kinda like flying concorde on MS-flight for years, then getting into your first real cessna.

The dogs bollox of a gig, the best I`ve been to for quite some time. Had an optimum view, 3 bods back from the front just to the right of Barney. Great crowd at the front and excellent slamming in the NOOLer friendly style. Roll on Monday for a second helping.

Yes!! It was fantastic, amazing, stunning, awesome, brilliant; the whole gig. My first NO concert; way to go......... Ceremony was simply sublime. As was Blue Monday (never thought i'd hear myself saying that) :\ohwell: And the JD songs. It was just such a great night out, the best gig i've ever been to. If I never went to another live concert again, I wouldn't think I was missing out

(Apart from Jeff Tweedy in a few days time) :) :) :) :) :)

Was just thinkin "you aint lived til you experience that ending of BM on The Big Speakers" can't wait.

Tho I'm sure those who'd heard it for the 129th time feel very differently.

Not sure aboput boots for London, but I'll be recording Manchester (taking 2 MInidisc Recorders in - just in case).

My random thoughts :

1. Great to meet some NOOLers again beforehand, particularly enjoyed chatting to Johhny Giles, Shug and John Sludden, Dave Clark from Kent and many others. Nice drop of Guinness too.

2. The band seemed REALLY up for it.

3. The acoustics in the Academy are totally shit, but it didn't matter. Reminded me of the old JD sound anyway, which is a good thing.

4. Best version of Transmission since JD days. Monumental!

5. So pleased to hear Warsaw and S'Play. The former was a brute, absolutely blindingly great; S'Play didn't quite work out. I wondered if Steve was playing it slightly differently to the old days with a weaker high-hat to push it along on the off-beat. Also maybe it sounds a bit odd as there isn't really a Hooky-style melodic bassline, it's underpinning the guitar rather than striking out on its own. Maybe that sounds odd now.

6. Ceremony - what a corking version to open with! Also the best Temptation I've heard for a while. I know others are sick to death of it, but for me Blue Monday was immense, just sounds so much better indoors.

7. What happened to Hooky's bass during LWTUA? I was about 1/4 of the way back and didn't see exactly what happened - a string? or it just died? Also didn't the replacement have a capo on at the second fret? Uh?

8. Lay off Phil. Obviously we'd rather see Gill back up there, but since that isn't going to happen, he's an ideal replacement. I cannot agree iwth the 'guitar wankery' comments, I think he is very solid, knows his place and gives ballast to the sound, allowing Barney and Hooky to 'rock da house', if you will.

9. Barney is playing some great guitar at the moment. Nice work on Temptn, Ceremony, actually ALL of them.

10. Barney is playing some great GUITARS at the moment. How many did he use? He should give some to me - I need them more than he does.

11. Steve. He's always great, but he was fucking immense last night. There are all sorts of drummers, and obviously if you want Keith Moon-style 'free' drumming then he aint your man, but for rhythmic precision and blistering intensity he can't be beaten. I remember some 'what does Steve do any more' type nonsense around the time the album came out. And nonsense is all it is. He's essential to the New Order sound, both live and in the studio. Just as essential as Hooky. No-one could step in and do what Steve did last night. Technically he's amazing - those little triplet and quintuplet rolls split between snare and tom, the off-the-beat push that he gives (WFTSC, Regret, Transmission etc etc), that middle section in LWTUA....I could go on, but you get the point. Frighteningly good.

12. They should just stick the whole thing out as ltd edition live album, £7.99, minimal packaging job.

I fucking love that “clunk” sound too.

Really looking forward to MCR on Monday now. Really glad Ceremony got in, and Temptation is still there. I love the JD songs. Only thing missing is a bit of Technique, but what can you do? I wouldn’t complain if that was the setlist for Monday.

Also: Steve is central to the NO/JD sound. End of.

Good to see everyone in the pub beforehand..the usuals Al,latecomer Jonny Giles, Shugz (where's my dvd?) Don, all the "Mike's", Jim Reilly (got ur tix?), Ness and all the ones I forgot..right GREG!

Had to check my coat which took ages so couldn't get up close to the stage..bumped into the three lovely ladies from the pub Delilah, Julie and the Geordie whose name I forgot and stood with them for the show

The setlist was good but I expected more suprises..Turn being the only major one..Ceremony was a great opener and Blue Monday was good although True Faith was the same bloody version as always..complete with Barney dancing..would have loved to hear some Technique stuff..although Your Silent Face and Love Vigilantes was sorta a surprise

Love the Joy Divison stuff esp LWTUA..and She's Lost Control although I though they should have also done Atmosphere..I guess that's what you get for asking the audience..also loved the fact that they slagged Green Day..showing the crowd what "real punk" was

Up next: Manchester :D

Regarding the acoustics at Brixton, personally i love 'em. The Brixton "BOOM" can screw things up in places, but it creates the best atmosphere of any venue i've been to. Go and see Motorhead there next week and you will see what i mean. Fucking epic!

Know exactly what you mean about that boom. I've never been to the Academy before, but will certainly go again - it's a top venue.

Top night - roll on Monday!
