Newbie NOOLers Meeting Up

This is an archived legacy thread. Replies are closed, but the discussion is preserved.

Couldn't find the Newbie thread, so sorry if repeating.

Had an e-mail from Matt Hicks who is keen to meet up with us all for the first time for the Manc gig, but he is concerned that he (my words) will have to prise himself into a cliquey formidable mob.

I did explain that it isn't the case and suggested that Barney Army was very impressed with his first experience of meeting up with the regulars (please share BA :D).

So don't be shy come along and join in - Joshua Brooks will be the place to start!!!

Reminds me of the old Groucho Marx adage, "I don't want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member!"

that reminds me, where can i get a New Order mouse mat? Not for my arse though.

2pm Joshuas? That should give us enough drinking time to not be able to remember the gig.

I do hope that wasn't personal! and dare I ask where you do intend to stick your mat, or shall I draw up a list?

Yes, but it could appear that way to outsiders who aren't as suave, witty and confident as you.

Mr Jarvis ignored me for the first half hour when I met him a few years ago, but seemed to losen up after a pint :p and then it was easy to grow to love him!

last time was my first time

and it was great, but i might still feel a little shy this time.

 oops, forgot about that, I dont need 'pink capsules' to forget gigs. It was 2 days until I'd realised they played Love Vigilantes at Hyde Park.

I'm more concerned about being let loose in a big city on my lonesome. And trying to work out who's who, and which ones of them owe me a smack in the chops for being a gobshite on here :)

Just fall in the door, sing the opening lines of STYT and end it with a classic jazzy coda of "now it's my rooooooooound".

And they'll love ya.

Seriously though, I reckon if all us virgins gang up it may be less intimidating.

Oh and is this pub a walk or a taxi ride from ths bus station?

err, I must admit I was a bit nervous at first, but everyone was really cool so I soon felt at home.

Although I may have to watch me back for 'americans' this time

I presume you mean Chorlton Street coach station, about a 10 minute walk.

Nah, I could do it in less than that even with my little trotters - down Canal Street then turn onto Princess street, past a couple of turnings and your there.

Getting train to Piccadilly, staying at the Gardens - is the pub within walking distance?

We're starting in Joshua Brooks? I thought we were starting in the Canterbury Arms? Do people really envisage stopping over the weekend?

As far as I know we are talking about the Monday afternoon, not the weekend, but I am up at the weekend anyway as are a few others.

There is on-going disagreement about meet ups for the Monday I think - who said Canterbury Arms?

Not that far at all - probably about 15 minutes (or so) - fairly close to Oxford Road train station.

Zoomed-out map here and more detailed map here.

See ya there!

Just to clear up any confusion, Canterbury Arms is the Brixton pub, Joshua Brookes is the Manchester one.

Bus? Steve, if you're flying into MCR the train is a better bet from the airport into Picadilly.

Cant say I have ever met a Nooler so I will make an effort to get to Joshua Brooks. Just one problem. No ticket at the moment. Working on a cunning plan to get my son who is a prefect at Hookys sons school to threaten him with a late Monday evening detention unless he coughs up a ticket/guest list invite. What chance hey?

Bus all the way from Belftas mate, plane is too much hassle.

Cheers Ness, 10 mins of sightseeing it is then.

I'm a Newbie Nooler, but will be travelling to Manc (and now, by the looks of it, Brixton) with the not-so Newbie Nooler, Doctor Clayhead.

If the Newbie Noolers insist on having their own little group, I will have to flit between the two like the social butterfly that I am (ahem).

You won't be able to miss us. We'll be the two drunk Stokies (we're planning to get there early-ish) and Doc will be showing off his New Order/Stoke City flag at every opportunity (or so I've been told)....

Look forward to meeting everyone!

Every NOOLer I've ever met has been one or all of the following:

a. Friendly

b. Chatty

c. Non-judgemental

d. As sad and uncool as me

e. Very, very drunk

Any 'newbies' have nothing to fear - just introduce yourself to anyone you recognise from pics on the site, someone wearing a NOOL T-shirt or anyone with one of Al's 'Vikings' badges... ...as long as no one is too drunk, you'll be introduced to a few people, probably bought a pint, chatted to, photographed, etc.

If people are too drunk, you'll just be bought beer, photographed, slurred at, hugged and drunkenly escorted to the gig

Oh, and you'll have a good time :thumb:

If anyone's worried about getting lost in scary Manchester, send me an email and I'll give you my mobile number.

If you call after about 2pm I will probably just slur "Get a cab" into the wrong end of the phone, but you never know, I might be of some use.

Joshua Brooks is pretty much in the middle of Oxford Rd and Picadilly Train stations and really near to Chorlton St bus station/rent boy forum. Ask someone for directions or get a < £3 cab and you can't go wrong (until you get to the pub, that is).

You getting on train at Stoke on 14th? If so, what time? We ain't had a beer for 3 years mate!

Most probably, Tim: you got a specific time you want to be in Manc? I'm fairly easy (fnaar fnaar), but was probably thinking along the lines of departing Stoke circa midday-1pm, heading to Joshua Brooks and doing the sensible thing of lining my stomach before the day's debauchery. Don't want to end up with a KFC bucket on my head or a broken arm, obviously!! Ms. Chapman will be accompanying us, I think.

Got to agree with all above. As a newbie NOOLer before the Hyde park gig in June really felt welcomed by all in the Audley pre gig from both old and new hands and look forward to meeting aquanticies old and new in Joshua Brooks. Catching the 12.54 train from brummie land so with vermin willing should be in the boozer about 3.30. hopefully you will all still be in there then..

WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH I wanna fly from dublin and get pissed and debauched at 33000 feet!!! However, just in case anyone else is suffering the same indignity, I'll be taken the Cheap Northern Bastard route, featuring grey skies, grey seas, grey heather and fucking cumbria (and it's number one landmark). Not to mention westmorland services, where you're brain is bent by having so many things to get bent over it can't decide which to get going on....are those REALLY ordinary rabbits outside or is this actually tubbyland....how the hell can they charge 17quid for a cup of brown liquid in a cup marked tea. And it may also feature prolonged periods of exposure to children, not a good thing. i think I mentioned the family of religious freaks on the coach last time I went over....how much did they annoy me.....I was serisouly weighing the jail sentence against, well, against they sheer pleasure of popping the emergency door and heaving the fckers out oldest to youngest, just to see if jesus was appreciative enough of their irritating noises, to do something about them hitting the tarmac at 70mph, 6inches infront of the obligatory eddie stobart driver who thinks he on the retifillio tribue at monza slipstreaming for a killer move.

Jesus I hope you're ugly Samantha, a pretty single girl who likes new order, I mean that's up their with "honest politician" and "non sociopathic drummer" and "modest singer"....I mean....you know they MUST be out there, but what are the chances of seeing one. I strongly suspect you will not have to buy a drink the entire night....more out of chivalry, and protection of a rare species than anything else I should imagine...I'll be able to spot you when I arrive......you'll be the one with 47 vikings in a circle round you laughing at every single intelligable utterance you make LOL I hope you don't smoke, if youpull out a fag so many lighters will spark up it'll set the sprinklers off. probably best if you don't read my profile :)

EDIT: I don't suppose any of the paddies know which magic piano's in Engerland will give you money if you give them a bank of ireland card and play your little tune on them. (I mean ATM's obviously)...I think I could do without the "take my money you retard" row this time.

I asked in the bank this morning and they said, most of them, first trust, nat west and midland (obviously since it works in NorthernBank machines here).

can't lift the money here because English shop staff are ASTONISHINGLY stupid. You can stand for hours explaning the picture of the Queen, the words "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of ten pounds STERLING", and point out that refusing a legal note of the realm is a treasonable offence for which you can still be hanged AND repeatedly tell them that the republic is a member of the Euro system and haven't spent anything with a word that looked like "pound" on it in over 5 years. but it's "mmooooo I can't take that, that's Irish money". Cunts, wankers and fucking dribbling spastics!! ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHH! Oddly enough tho, if you use em in a motorway services no one even bats an eyelid cos they see em all the time and know they're legit. I WAS planning on printing out HM treasury legislation on the issuing of UK notes in scotland and NI...but I figure anyone stupid enough to still not have worked it out after all the above has been explained....is likely to need me to read it to them.

SO be warned if you get your Euros changed in Dublin, make sure they don;t give you BoI, Northern or UB notes.

I can understand refusing scottish notes. They wear skirts with no underpants, so where does the money go?

Me, I’ll just sit at the side and laugh my cock off at yer all, drink beer and chant NUUUU ORRR DAAHHHH lots, like a twat. It’s a surefire winning tactic, in theory???

Talking of 'aesthetically pleasing birds', Liv and Kezzie are (allegedly) doing Manchester. Been ages since they've joined us for a soiree.

How are you travelling over? Clock & myself are on the ryanair Dublin-Manc on 14th at 12.35 - if you're on the same flight we can start in the bar in Dublin airport & ALL get lost looking for Josh Brooks in Manc

Same flight! Sounds like a plan. Airport bar it is!

Email me & i'll send back my mobile number for contact on the day:thumb:

Ok - but to where exactly?! Can't see a link to your e-mail address.

can't lift the money here because English shop staff are ASTONISHINGLY stupid.

Got it - looks like you're screwed then. We'll all chip in and buy you a pint.

I am a very new NOOLER who will also be going to joshua brookes' with a couple of mates for about 2pm. However my girlfriend is coming along later, so just watch for the sudden and unexplained improvement in my behaviour about 6pm!!

A word of warning on the subject of money, a lot of places in Manchester wont even take scottish money, let alone irish, due to the large amount of fake notes in circulation. Dont want anyone coming down from scotland to get to the pub in the pissing rain only to find out they cant spend in there.

I predict a riot!

I think the plan is to bring pockets full of brass bricks, then pray for ATM compatibility....which my bank assure me is no worry. At least with a pile of shrapnel on me I wont be a total charity case if the magic piano says "fook off chancer"

BTW, how much will I have to pay for a pint over there? (have to work out the budget:laugh: )

Budget £2.50 upwards for a pint of decent strong continental lager in most pubs in and around the city centre. Bitter and real ales etc will probably be cheaper but spirits can be a rip off so stay away from jugs of supposed coctails....

Most annoying though, and certainly a surprise if your not used to it, is the blokes that hang around in the toilets of city centre bars these days trying to get money off you just for washing your fucking hands!

I've been tryin to figure out if I can get Rich to score a gallon of Poteen of his uncle in time, that'd make the evening go with a bang. Stuff has a bad enough effect on our systems, can you imagine what a whole pile of English vikings lashed on the stuff would look like. The "next day" scene would, however warrent the playing in of Barber's adagio for strings ( note to the culturless: that's the sad tune from platoon).

Couldn't be worst than me... I had plans to sleep at somebody's place I never met, I was meeting up with people I've never met afterwards, and even worst, they were all speaking something else than french!!!!

Fortunatly I was pretty tired when I get off the plane, so it didn't show... and people paid me beer so it didn't show neither

But I was pretty dead-tired 2 days later, had to sleep something like 12 hours in NYC ;)

That's brave Spotty, bigger danglies than I my good man.

But your plane tale made me think...after 7 hours on a bus and 3 on an HSS (how they get HSS out of high speed sea going catermaran I dunno)...I'm gonna need 4 other persons to hold me vertical....and thet's BEFORE a I start boozing :)

We're nearly all a bit guilty in taking that for granted, and most of us would be fooked if we had to try and converse in another language. Respect to the big man!

thanks Ness for starting the thread, so basically I am safe in the knowledge that everything will be ok when I meet everyone for the first time. Wonder what Joshua Brookes will make of us all? I should dig out my new order t-shirts so i can be recognised. its good we are meeting at JB, thats 60 seconds walk from work, and I plan to take half day off so I'll be starting early-ish too.

Matt.

Well it will a bit - not many of the hardcore do these days.

I am predicting another outing for Mr Js brown penguin pol - it's been to more new order gigs this year than half the posters on here have in their lifetimes!

I'll be wearin me brand new ceremony shirt, and then a movement one for the way home. I will also have my very best "here are the young men" coat on.

I reckon it'll be a case of pokin my head round the door and using my mental prowess to work out whether the ones I want are all the small groups having a quiet monday afternoon jar, or the 100 NO clad maniacs singing transmission in the corner :)

No problem Matt, look forward to meeting you then :)

Joshua Brookes will probably wish that they had more than their usual Monday afternoon staff quota!

Maybe Matt can give them some advance warning if it's only 100 metres away from his work. I for one, will not be happy if I have to queue for more than 2 minutes for a beer ;)

This actually is a good idea. I nearly killed the bar staff at the Olympia the fookin' slow-arse bastards. And as for that pub before Finsbury - I was chatting to a lad behind the bar and he was like "who are all these people? Some of them have come from Manchester...!!". He was shocked - it looked like he thought people further norf than Watford all looked like Captain Caveman.

Although he might have had a point thinking about the clientele that day!!

Captain caveman has hair. Loads of it.
