Jabez Clegg provisionally booked for Easter Monday, will get costs later.

I'm out of my depth now, need some advice from you guys about equipment, promotions etc.

Got this message from my mate "I have talked to the guys at Jabez and they have provisionally booked you in for Easter Monday. They have a few questions about equipment hire etc (ie do you need any equipment), I could see if we can get any promotions and such. They will need to know start times, access times etc."

If the cost is reasonable can I put the manager in touch with one of you lot?

Is Monty gonna do a 'neworderdisco' ?

Well, we need to know if there's anything in house that we can use. If they have an inhouse disco type thing, then, we could use that, unless we're defo having bands.

Odd that they want to know, usually that's our business.

Anyway, once we knoe what we're having, I can make a better guess. Dave A. has a mixer that will do the trick no matter what, it's just a question of whether we can scrounge up enough main noise speakers.

Then I'll need a little help from anyone who's in a band or has mates in a band, in and around greater manc.....why...so i don't phone up the local shit-box hire firm, and get gear that the Mondays used to use :)

There are 2 ways we can go...

Disco only (potentially with asshole karaoke from a lapper, all we need is a mic, a DI box if anyone wants to make a bap of themselves and an FX unit (or software)). BTW, if we don't manage to get some nice MIDI based backings for karaoke, there's nothing stopping us all from just bawling over the top of a record, there are ways and means of vocal reduction too. Anyway, that's just a sick plan to see us all make total breasts of ourselves. Lights=fog+strobe any questions? At most for this, we'll need just a sound rig (I'm guessing between us, we can scrounge up a pair of SL12nn's a mixer and a coupla clever cd players.)

Or The full Monty, with 2 or 3 bands and a full sound rig with montiors and lights. This is obviously the way to do a good night's entertainment. However there are downsides. there could be a LOT of hire involved....a main front of house PA, another 2 stereo amps for monitors (and some 31band graphics for feedback ringing....do people still do that or have eliminators totaly taken over, I been out of the loop a coupla years), mics, stands, cables and proper lighting (potentially involving a lighting console and someone who actually knows about light to set it up and run it). That is big bucks, depending on expected attendance. It also amounts to a full day's setup work to do it right (we're not a touring unit who's been setting and breaking the same gear 4 times a week for a few months, this will essentially be a prototyping gig for multiple bands, wrinkles will need ironing). I don't mind cos it keeps me from the football, but each band will need a rep there at most times, and one who actually knows stuff about the other players and all. And the WORST drawback of all is that some poor cunt's gotta take it all aprt blocked, and then get up the next day and take it all home.

My feeling would be that we keep it fairly simple....

We do for a basic disco type setup, but we add the following items....

A laptop (or a desktop) that cam be used for playing in mp3s (or MIDIs), and providing effects. (this will need some SERIOUS discussion among the geeks here before we do anything, you all know why) A small non dj mixer, a folio notepad might be a bit TOO small, but daves 18 channel thingy would be overkill. I have a Folio 12:2 that I'd gladly donate but, it would NEVER get through customs, the faders are caked in 10 years worth of slightlynarrow studio and club residue. This will give us an access point for mics and, via a couple of DI boxen, guitars and basses, so that even though we don't have a full stage setup we can still let people do a wee turn if the urge takes them. And maybe even a synth for the inclined to jam along on.

No offense to our skinbasher contingent but the essential difference between doing this on the cheap and doing this expensively, is "do we have drummers".

So anyway, what size is the place, is there a dj booth or are we builing our own isolation. And do they really want to handle gear hire for us?

I'm guessing they can provide all the stuff for a DJ as the room converts to a mini-club.

I should have more details soon.

If that's the case then the "halfway house" option I detailed would be an absolute stress-free pisshead friendly laugh.

ummm, just a thought but we dont really know how many are coming. If it's just 20 then we may as well just go to the pub!!!

But if it's 100 or so then fine.

I notice the London order have been quiet on this :uhoh:

Is it being strictly limited to people from the site or is anyone welcome? Presumably, anyone is, especially is there is money at stake.

Right, before we go any further.......

Thanks Nick for putting a provisional down on Jabez Clegg. It really will depend on how much the hire is, I would be looking for it to be a lot cheaper than the normal rate, as it is a Monday and at a time when their usual clientele are away, so they have no excuse for charging us the full rate. I would be hoping for a deal whereby they keep all the bar takings, we cover the rate of any additional bar staff required, we keep the door takings (it will have to be tickets only).

If this is going to happen, we need the following (in no particular order)

  • Bands (plus band sound men, vehicle hire)
  • crew (volunteers or hire)
  • DJs (volunteers)
  • punters (NOOLers and others)
  • ticket sales (through the organisers (i.e. us) – no tickets on door as cashflow projection required)
  • advertising/promotional material (volunteers)
  • punter accommodation (I will research this)
  • charity backing (assuming we are intending to promote this in conjunction with a charity, I would recommend we support Cancer Research, who would thus contribute to the promotional campaign and receive a cut of the takings)

To start with, it will cost both Digital and Re: Order to travel up to Manchester, i.e. a van each for the gear, and a car each for the band members. Flight would also need transport from Liverpool. These costs would have to be factored into the overheads and running costs, and added to the venue hire, promo material production/media advertising costs/charity projection, and from this we would be able to project a suitable ticket price.

We will need expressions of interest from NOOLers, obviously this won’t have the same draw as the Order itself, but I would be reasonably optimistic of 100+ attendance. Should we be able to persuade Hooky to make an appearance, I would expect the attendance would increase, but we can’t rely on that.

Until we know what Jabez would propose on hire costs (and what else they can provide in-house) we may have to park certain aspects of this for a few days.

I will happily project manage the whole event, and contact the venue, source the accommodation, contact the charity etc and establish charity status (which will convert many of our costs in tax status etc).

Tim, you obviously know what you are doing here. Shall I get the contact details for the manager and pass on to you?

I'm happy to help in any way I can.

I will happily assist with security on the door to frisk all the ladies. And anyone found with a soft drink inside will be ejected, after public humiliation.

Yes please. I'll be able to get a feel for what they can provide etc. Obviously this sort of weds us to the April slot, so it may be best to give it a few days before getting the contact details for the manager, as we will need a date decision before negotiating.

As for snss....it may just be me, i'll need to ask Rich. I don't think we have a car available....so we may actually be talking about me having to freight over a PC and a bass! Presumably to one of you guys. then again, me bass made it to America in a gigbag in the hold of the plane.

We really wont need to hire a crew, there's enough savvy and semi savvy and enthusiastic people here to crew any gig.

Things we need to know to help tie down costs, and can do to keep them down...

Our bands, how many monitor feeds can we keep it to? More than 4 and really, we're gonna need a console (refer to my previous 1600 posts about monitor desks and why they are bad). 4 feeds and a group-out used to feed some side fills if needed is about the realistic limit of most consoles and my brain. that's still 3 more medium output power amps and 6 more speakers.

Is the in-house system avalable to us, and is it capable of working in a reinforcement role against a drumset. Putting a band through a club rig never ever works out well....but if the sound system that's there has been installed "band wise" ie, all at the front near the stage, we MIGHT get away with it.

Lights...lights are, to be blunt...fucking expensive. we need to know what's there. If the venue is often used for bands, then there's a fair chance it'll have a few power cans pointed on the stage, and if it's used as a club, they may well have some fun things too. However, if the in house lights are a bit pissy...we are gonna have to think long and hard about what we want. A couple of dimmer racks, a dozen cans, a couple of spots, amd a console (and someone to at least set it up...i fucking hate 3 phase, and hate being within 6 feet of a dimmer rack even more...doubly so when all the lamps are off....shuddering just thinking about it)...even a modest rig like that is ££££££. And if we want to play with varilight/intellibeams the cost will be sick and wrong.

I like the lighting on PFD...you all do too, let's make that our model :)

there's a load of other things, but the above are the big technical cost points.

ONE OTHER VITAL...... get the drummers talking to each other ASAP! If we can keep it to one kit, the crew can drink, if not, we need at least 3 guys who are stone cold sober and can not only help a drummer derig and rig, but can slo position mics like a surgeon, or it WILL all go very very wrong (OR we hire 3 times the number of mics we neeed, and I get in training for running from one end of a 72 chanel console to the other :) ). Ideally, you should each tell your drummer that one of the other bands is bringing a £12000 custom drumset and they won't need theirs :)

We needn't worry about either lights or sound systems, it's a proper venue with in-house gear.

As for drum kits, fear not, this is already well-established. Even down to the Roland drum pads, MIDI triggers, sequencers etc. Dealing with pros here Steve!

Nothing is gonna get overscaled, believe me. There are distinct advantages to being involved with a charity - wider publicity, lower costs on venue hire, greater sense of wanting to become involved and community spirit.

If anything, I am going to be more inclined to want to make the event exclusive, have only a set amount of tickets available. That depends on the capacity of the venue. Assuming Jabez (and this is a baseline, no guarantees that we will be working with Jabez yet, that depends on what deal I can strike on costs) holds 500, that would give plenty of scope for fundraising once the overheads have been met (and having a charity onboard lowers the overheads). I would hope that I can strike a beer sales deal with the venue, that they take the beer money and we pay them only the cost of any additional staff, rather than a venue hire charge. There are plenty of venues that will be available free of charge after all.

All bands/DJs taking part will be doing so for expenses only, plus maybe a rider. Expenses will be factored into the overheads and paid accordingly. Nobody who is giving up their services and time will be out of pocket. If we have four bands, one travelling from Liverpool, two from London, one local, plus a couple of local DJs, we will know what the van/PA hire will be. You never know, we may be able to persuade a local PA company to join in the fun from a Gift Aid perspective.

Costs are thus van hire, maybe PA hire, probably a couple of door staff (volunteers appreciated), bands rider, promotion and publicity materials (as we are probably talking 500 tickets max for production, these would probably incur a slightly higher set-up cost, which would have to be swallowed in the overheads). If we charge £10 a ticket (for a whole day of bands and DJs, pretty good value), only 100 attending would still see us turning the best part of £400 for the charity. Obviously we put a sliding scale in place for charity cut from the event, with a ceiling in place that if the venue is full, then the bands could turn a small profit as well.

We could also consider, but very much as a secondary angle, the production of badges, T-shirts for the event, and even sell gig audio/video recordings afterwards, all from the perspective that we look to cover costs first, then contribute to the charity/feed profits back into the event. We don’t want a situation where the one angle ends up funding the other, such as the T-shirts making a loss and costs eating into the event, so these would need to be treated as separate but complimentary workstreams. Oh shit I just started talking consultant speak for the first time in all this!

You've thought this out. :)

Pro's you say.....not particularly accurate for a NO tribute band really :D

Only thing is, you keep being this organized, and you'll get stage manager to do on top of everything else :)

We gotta end with records for sure, because it'll give anyone who's had their head in gig mode all day a chance for some post gig fun before kicking out time.

Riders....holy fuck man you really are going pro....mine's a comfy chair, a RedBull I.V. and a talkback mic. Oh and a seat for jem, or Maya, or Sam or whatever one of the lovely NOOLettes wants to keep a lonely desk jockey company :)

Are we gonna be able to cover monitoring from the main desk do you think?

We've shared amps and kit enough times to have looked for the shortcuts and easy ways to get places!

As the idea isn't about the bands taking the profit, like it would be in most gigs, we have to factor soft benefits in, like a case of beer or two backstage. Should be able to get those heavily discounted ;)

Without seeing the venue's tech spec I can't comment on the monitoring, but a whole load of proper bands play there on a regular basis, so it must have some things going for it! I'll head up there for a recce pretty soon, but obviously will speak to the gaffer over the next few days.

bit more info from my mate..

"There will be no charge for the use of Jabez, though they will need to cover costs (not including bar staff as they take the bar takings). The items they would need to charge for would be PA hire (though we could probably sort something as there is a band night in there the night after), and Door staff if you required a late bar, though again I could try and do a deal if you can guarantee numbers (and you can if you are selling tickets in advance). They already have a stage so that would be thrown in, as long as it is big enough. Also if you are going to get a few people coming I could try and get some bar promotions."

will forward the managers contact details when I get them

Fookin' bang on sir! Good work :thumb:

We can probably source PA hire ourselves. Door staff would be essential. We will be selling tickets in advance, the only way to assure that costs are met and cash flow is guaranteed. Bar promotions are most definitely welcomed!

Excellent, that brings us to about 4 bands so far plus me and my machine (the full menagerie are not making the trip)

Good job we'll have door staff, I hear some of your relatives are quite rough characters, to say nothing of some of the nefarious characters they hang about with :D

4 bands over the course of an afternoon/evening doesn't sound too hectic now does it :)

That's not saying we wont take walk in business if it comes, but the party line has to be "ticket only"

So all the bands are basically Drums, bass, 1 machinist and 1-14 guitars then?

Are we miking guitar amps, or does anyone have an Orange or AC30? (this is just a ploy to smoke you out, it's a charity gig, we can't afford a 25Kw rig to compete with your "30W" amp. :D), serisouly tho, one of those could throw a guitar into a good sized space unaided, then again, it's nice to have them in the PA a touch for balance sake, and there's always the tapes.....available from Steve's DAT machine 10 mins after the gig, all proceeds to my beer fun....aw fuck all right, the do-gooders.

OldMonkey, you sound like you've been doing this shit regularly recently, DO people still use EQ's to ring the feedback out of monitors or have gizmos totally taken over? hey even NO can run feedback free these days! (with the notable exception of moments of idiocy, like a 30 year veteran vocalist cupping his hands round a live mic in front of a wedge....I really do marvel at bernard sometimes)

it's been a good 5 years since I've flown "da big rig" for a full band (actually for about 8 bands, some of them with 9 members)[1], and back in them days, the feedback eliminator was an exotic bit of kit with a stupid price tag (fucking hovis music's fading up here). So it was strictly a 31 band graphic and ring the shit out of the place...then give someone a torch and a salt gun and tell them to watch the wedges and mics. Oddly enough, the 14 piece jazz insanity groove band i played with typically shoved the horns thru an old bass amp, and everyone else fended for themselves on backline....sounded fine too. I dunno, I think I'm freaking a teeny bit. Not cos i can't hack it, I can. But i don't want to be prepping myself for Wembley, and rack of gates and compressors and more eq than I'll ever need, and spending proper time doing drum gating (not that that'll be any issue if we're all electric), and all the other niceties of a proper pro gig....and it'll be a great old pub knockabout job. Not that I will object in any way, I'll just have foamed my wee brain up for fuck all beforehand.

Conversely of course I don't want to dander in there thinking I'm plugging up a coupla of mics and a DI...ad be presented with "Der Blinkenlichten" in huge quantities.

Meet Steve's pregig stress system....gig=stress that's a fact of life. So I like to get it all over and done with before hand and go through every moronically unlikely scenario a million times. Consequently, when the bass amp lets out the magic white smoke that makes it work, half way through a song on gig night, I simply reacted according to plan. Some of the jazz band gigs and college based stuff was aflicted with Rudolph Steiner schooled hippy offspring, who, weile lovely people, had a horendous tendancy to say things like "don't worry about it man, it'll be OK"...of course it always was....but it still left stress in me head on gig day.

Sit back and enjoy my descent into insaity over the next few months, then come the day, watch me be cool (cool being a relative term).

I HAVE been practising talkback abuse in a brilliant Hannet-esque voice (well the bloke in 24hpp...golum). But of course I can't fuck off and come back when it's worthwhile sounding :)

And of course, you gave me a wee shock with the scope of the "event" we're creating....so you know....top of the game and all. I don't want to cack it all up on you. Although I suspect there will be enough critical ears about that if i lose the plot, I'll get replaced right and quick :D

Oh....(where the FUCK is that columbo smiley I recently rudely demanded) The stage manager is going to have to know everything about swapping bands in and out....shortlist for the job looks shorter all the time :)

[1] that reminds me....anyone here ever used speakers called "community"? Ever seen their little trick? it's the most mind-bucklingly useful feature I ever seen. Shame they are brutally inefficient.

Read, Learn and inwardly digest

^^ awsesome stuff, I'm into week 3 and have laughed my bollox off, learned a thing or 2 (never been NEAR a big label session in my life) and recognised sevberal characters too. I believe it was Gnu Order who posted it originally, and it's the main reason i've not had him shot for his matchmaking efforts ;)

It will not only explain all sorts of complex things about the annoyances of making music "professionally", but entertain you as well.

As for hijacking I was actually referring to the threadstarter, just having a pick on him tonight, that's all.

It's also very difficult to play bass or guitar with your hands covered in smeg. Cable or otherwise... (oh the mammaries sorry, memories of the ladies' toilets in so many dodgy venues in the 80's)

I'm happy to help out with the day any way I can - I've done door security, theatre lighting and some studio and live engineering. Doubt anyone will get me up on stage with a bass again though, unless of course, I'm very drunk... Happy to help out with press releases (if any) or other publicity too.

I've only just noticed this thread!!

Mancland it is then. We will be there. We don't want paying (expenses or otherwise), throw anything that would have gone to us into the charity pot.

Steve, if anyone is using acoustic drums I can set up your mics for you.

Flight are easy to set up. We use 2 x guitars, 1 x keys and 1 x bass. Drums are from Laptop (which will need to be drirectly connected to house PA).

The stage at Jabez is small from memory (and about 2 inches off the floor) so all bands will need to talk to each other and amp share where poss.

Cheers

It APPEARS we will be blessed with electric drums all round. Even one accoustic kit is easy. My panic was needing to move mics mid gig, that never goes well :)

oh, and we'll bring your lapper down to the front of house on 2 DI boxes, mine too. (unless we can get a stage box with Jack inputs of course, a DI really isn't required for line level)

Don't jump the gun on acoustic kit safety Steve!

We have a full acoustic kit, which is accompanied by at least two Roland SPD-6 drum pads (may be three by then), and a selection of sequencers (inc click track feed for the likes of Temptation).

We've done kit shares with Re: Order before, who have a very similar set-up, and there would only be one kit making its way up from London. We'll have to sort this out between ourselves.

We've got two/three keyboards, two sequencers, PA we use as a monitor mix, full backline in terms of amps (though one keyboard could go through the in-house PA), half a dozen guitars across two amps, and separate bass rigs. Plus a rackmount full of all kinds of gubbins from digital tuners to 31 band GEQ, and three floorboards of pedals. No wonder it takes so long to set up!

Plus a shedload of DI boxes as well, and an autocue screen/laptop VGA from side of stage. We will have at least one crew member there, though she doesn't know it yet and will only be progressing the autocue!

Obviously happy to share on amps etc if space is at a premium.

quick version, cos I hate doing anything twice......

Montiors: your PA, is it a stereo sidefill feed, 2 wedge feeds, more or what...will we need any more monitors (they are my demon, if the band can't hear themselves, everything else is fucked from the outset :) )

Do you submix the keyboards/machines on stage, am I getting them on a stero DI, a mess of individual feeds, or am I picking them up out of your KB player's backline?

Accoustic kit is fine and dandy with me, the only thing I was fretting about was hot swapping kits mid gig, it's just ugly, especially when you have to use the same mics for each kit (charity gig after all).

All your rack gear, is that in use on stage, or is any of it coming out front?

And...any of you other bands got anything terrible you want to tell me, tell me now :)

At least you guys know your own shit, that makes my life a whole lot easier than trying to get a good sound together wih a bunch of grunting mules on stage :)

We'd need full monitor mix on stage, we use our PA as the back-up more often than not, and it carries the click track feed for Jon the drummer. When we bother to bring it that is.

Keys/machines are generally individual feeds with us, three of them, though this could be switched for stereo DI I suppose. Half the time we don't even mic up the amps in the shite venues we play!

Most of the rack gear I use is to shape the guitar sound on stage. The tuner stands alone though, ground loop central, those buggers!

May bring a huge stack to split the guitar rig between a clean NO sound and a flangetastic JD special, seeing as the Masquerader and Phantom only get used on JD stuff, and the 335 and SG only get used on the NO stuff. Two rigs, one as back-up if need be. If it fits in the van it can come.

Talking of which, anyone know any London van hire firms who fancy doing a top rate for two nights hire for a charity event? Two vans needed.

You want lots of monitors then, what joy :) any more than about 4 and really you might be better off with a chap to the side mixing it. Tho I'm up for giving it a shot from Front of House if it'll save costs, I can't promise to be the greatest monior engineer in the world when I'm trying to get the FoH right if it's like 6 feeds :)

I can handle the machinery whatever way you send it to me, I just needed to know. Between an annotated engineer's set list (bless your little cottons), and the fact that after 20 years I ought to have SOME idea what the material's meant to sound like, I think we'll do OK.

If you;ve got most of the fx covered on stage, Then down front, in an ideal world...a coupla multifx boxes (one for verb one for delay), about ( to be safe) 8 channels of gates, 6 of compression, a side of an EQ per monitor feed...I can see 32 channels of console being needed, and as much noise as it'll take to fill the room without raising more than an orange light. I'll look into eliminators instead of EQ's, because if the in-house decks are wonky or we have to set our own up, an eliminator will be essential for them (I've tried ringing decks out before and it basically stinks), and if we have to get one, well, we'll see.

of course, I'll do it with a smouldering old Carlsboro mixer amp and a guitar pedal for reverb if that's the way the costs pan out. I stand on no ceremony.

I take it you guys are coming up on the Sunday? I'm coming over Sat night or Sun morning, so a fookin huge feedup and a final going over for as many band membes and technical types as we can muster, in a nice eatery, on the Sunday evening would be a bloody good plan....that gives us Monday AM to freak out and sort out whatever we only worked out on Sunday night without causing undue disruption to gig or football :D (no one's talking about the football any more, Maybe the thought of all this quality entertainment is clouding their memories.)

On topic bit :)

If any of the bands playing this happen to have a sstock rider lying around, mail me it, it'll make me feel I'm doing something useful just by looking it over.

What are Jack's bunch called BTW?

And some time, you might all want to post your setlists, at least cover wise (I'm sure you wont be bottled off for original songs, Flight and $JACKS_LOT), just so we don;t get like 4 versions of DNE or anything...yeah like that's bad.

So which of you lot have 6 string basses then btw?

EDIT: one more semi salient point, I have a fully operational Moog Rogue here, if anyone has a DR series beat box for EGG/Temptation:)

Good question re. Jack's band name - Jack?

At this stage it is very difficult to say who will be playing what songs - naturally there is some overlap between the NO songs we play and the NO songs Re: Order play, but to be honest people aren't ever gonna tire of hearing Ceremony, Temptation, LWTUA etc. Unlikely that we will do Dreams Never End, we have done it before, but it isn't in the A set. Flight would have first dibs on this one anyway!

As for 6-string basses, yes, there will be some present. And 5-strings, Rickenbackers, maybe even 335 feedbackers!

Between us and Re: Order we've got all the authentic gear, though most of the guitar effects units we use are a bit more modern than Bernard's old Melos echo box.

Cool, as long as you know I wont do a stroke of useful work until I get to perv over the 6strings ;) I'll just stand there and rub my legs vic reeves fashion. I assume the keyboard rig is a little less authentic?

BTW, who plays the Rick's ( so I know who's pint not to spill)

:)

I didn;t actually realise how much effort you boys put into this mularky. I mean FFS we gigged original material and bluffed our way with whatever kit wasn't broken that day usually (I do paint us blacker than we deserve). I wasn;t kidding either about it being the way it had to be. Any other gigs I've worked on, planning and prep save the day....SNSS try it and it just enrages the Gods. Last radio gig we did, we had checklists and debug checklists and even did the old "take the stage rig apart, and set it up in another room without going back to the old one" thing to make sure we were on top of it. Between the 1st and 2nd songs the Akai developed persistance of memory and would only load at about 1/10 the speed it was meant to, and in the middle of dealing with that, Rich caught the atari's power cable and sent it flying. It's the only time as a player or an engineer or anything, that i had to throw in the towell and get the DJ to put a record on while we reset. Only took us 5 mins, but imagine it had been on a live stage with no convenient dj.

That's why i said about your KB rig not being so authentic, I doubt you can be arsed with NO's failure rates :)

Keyboards are far more reliable - Roland XP10, JV something or other and I think Re: Order have an XP80. Sequencers are varied and Roland/Yamaha in origin. Drum pads are all Roland SP6s.

There's laptop back-up as well if need be, it also powers the autocue (as is de rigeur these days!)

Dunno what makes you think I'm not gonna snipe your autocue like I been threatening to do to bernard all these years.

I'm surprised you even need the backups with all that roland gear. IN 3 years I've never even confused my JV90, which is shocking mainly because I can crash almost any other "synth" with a degree of skill usually reserved for computer programmers.

Same reason that Hooky and Bernard have two identical amp rigs on stage - paranoia!

Ahem? Any large comfy leather chair i spot will be bolted to the ground behind the sound desk. It's an unwritten law, that "man with faders get comfiest chair", be it me, Monty (if the decks are in the sound enclosure), anyone else who sucks less than I do, or the ghost of Martin Hannet.

Here, Monty, does you gear not mind getting boomed around or does it like being all nicely suspended and isolated? Are we doing the big spinning black plastic things or just CD's?

Can you play LONG sets? :) Just on the offchance that by 9pm the entire stage and sound crew (signups open shortly, B.Army, you're drafted fucker :) ) is several sheets to the wind, it's a better plan to let them work at their own pace :D

Thought for the day..... If this is a late bar (what are the ramifications of the 24hpp licensing laws?) I...that's ME, for LAZY, PERSONAL, and some fairly spurious technical reasons.....would LIKE, to not end with bands. Say for instance it's a 1am bar and 1:30 fuckout time. I'd say plan to be bringing the last band off stage at around midnight. that means that by 12:20, most of the stage kit is broken down as much as it can be, the bands can chill, the band's slaves can chill, my slaves can chill, and i can chill save for the corner of one eye I'll keep on Monty cos he's a DJ, and it's not my rig :) Means that come the end of things the stuff can go to the vans, or be stored safely in house til the morning, without too much pissed falling around, because all the delicate stuff's been done.

If we play to curfew with bands (and if that's the vibe yous'uns want, I'm fine with it, no questions), it means all the people connected with the stage have to stay at least half way not fucked until the very death. There's nothing more painful that pulling a stage apart when you're so fuckered all you want is a kebab, oral sex and bed in any order or combination. Then again...it's a NO related gig, sod sense :)

I'll do as long as you want me! I'm just buzzing to be a part of it if there's room for a phat one. My gear minus amps and speakers takes up fook-all room.Could fit it on an average sized pub table. Just need a hand wiring up to whatever in-house soundsystem (or other) gear.Would be perfect if they did, that way,end of night,I would be able to carry on,and the bands be able to pack everything away. I'd be playing CDs and vinyl. Was quite surprised last gig, that I played 9-2am and there was still a wealth of stuff I didn't get to play.

Have you got one of those Jimmy Saville chairs, that has booze coming out of hidden compartments in the arms.:spit:

No, but I HAVE asked for a Canford Audio 19" mounted wine cooler (tho I suspect Misy Jem may drain it).

How's you turntables for feedback?

Not so bad so long as the cartridges are kept loose.I'd try and play as much on CD as I possibly can.

Tosser test passed with flying colours mate :) there are an awful lot of wrong answers to my question, and a very few right ones (for instance: "fucking terrible, any ideas?"), but that's one I've not heard from anyone but our own pet DJ's before.

Does that actually work? I know that we never had a feedback problem with decks when working with Rich(other half of snss) and George, it never entered my head. Pissed me off at times cos i LOVE alex paterson's patent trick (in my head...ok..i know other dj's do it) of stopping the deck, slamming the bass up and waiting, then sorting it all out JUST before the soundsystem implodes, and I used to try it if left near the decks too long, and it never worked. And one of the tricks they told me was adjusting the cart mounting (and obviously not using jurassic needles with a nice pick furry halo round them to act as a pickup). Ah well, MUST be true then :)

The single dumbest thing I ever seen done was by a certain nationally known Belfast DJ and his sidekick. they used to drag this completely un-called for sound rig up from Dublin, costing a fortune, and not use half of it. On several occassions when I attended as a wankered dancing mess, the decks were set up on.... brace yourself for this.... unplugged speakers of exactly the same spec as the ones, plugged in, 3 feet away. :banghead:

you don't need to be Martin Hannet to work that one out like (if anyone is confused about what I'm on about, find a guitar, or a piano and sing a note to it.....it sings back...sympathetic resonance)FFS some big concert rigs actually have passive speakers in them to get better resonance.

One night I was playing there, me, a couple of totally wasted tubes from college who I refused point blank to play the tunes to before the gig (I even soundchecked with a tune we weren't playing), and a bunch of unreliable and sick machines. I tried to tell the dj's what was going to happen. No comprehension. SO, the Dj's pushed their level as hard as it could go before VVVVVVVVVVVMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM happened, and stayed their all night. i came along at 11:30, with no such limit, the engineer [1] just grinned, and let it it ride. I literally BLEW the decks off the stage volume wise...the place went fucking mental instantly I dropped a bass drum in. Good job too cos the tunes were pretty shite TBH.

hey, look, I'm talking bollox again.

[1]remember I said the rig was pointless....they had a 32 channel console for...a stereo line from the dj mixer, 2 mics for a percussion player, and on that night, a stereo pair from me). I'm thinking I'm a twat for looking at something that size for doing 4 friggin bands on for NOOLday :) They also had an engineer, an assistant engineer and a 4 man crew. What was actually needed, was authorization from the house to use the in-house rig, and then 60 bills for 2K of bass bins from the hire shop...next door (more or less) muppetry! The engineer had the look of a man who'd had the same conversation as me with the dj's so many times he just didn't give a fucking toss any more, and I do not blame him one bit.

What kind of set-up have they got in Jabez? I've not been in there for years.Have they got a stage? Would be great if they had somewhere to store the stuff overnight so I can have a few drinks while I'm spinning some tunes. I've also got a T-Bar and some good spotlights if necessary, though it might be a bit redundant with all your gear coming.Let me know and I can always bring 'em.

THinking about it,last couple of times,my turntables have been about two feet from the speakers...and they were monsters!! If there's an enclosure,I'd probably play more vinyl, but if it's a stage job,and there's likely to be a Viking pitch invasion...will mostly play CDs later on.:jump::jump::jump::jump::jump::jump: (Viking pitch invasion)

Rumour has it the stage is less than imense. I will build us a fortress and you can come hide with me. Any fucker tries to pitch invade near a whole pile of gear hired in my ....errrrrr....Tim's name ( :D ) get's violenced, no arguments :)

Besides, it's an extra pair of eyes to track neaby drinks and their wobbly owners :)

OOH FUCK! Is that the rider? Confiscating nearby drinks? Heh heh.I've had a few spills on the equipment days gone by,they've not blown up on me,fortunately, but the sliders get fucked when the beer dries up.Very much like myself actually.

Minesweeping's often the only way when you;re on sound. The bar's always fucking closed when you're finished.

BTW....do we have a Spark in the house?

(me scared of 3-phase and such)

Wot we doing about promotion? I know a couple of FREE sites for Manchester METRO and Manchester Evening News GO magazine. I would be interested in what publicity MEN would provide knowing it's for Cancer Research. Plus if you want any posters doing,I'm a bit nifty with the old Microsoft Word. Get my posters done at a firm down Salford Quays, they blow them up to large poster size say 48" x 36" or bigger. Whether they will do deal for charity is another thing, but the more posters they do,the better discount they give.

I push faders and rotate knobs, occasionally I shout horrific abuse down the talkback[1]. Strategy, is OldMonkey's end of things thus far anyway. I assume the "other ranks" portion of the event will be the gig? Or is the footy and afterparty and Maya's bedroom all public too :) (there's a point...afterparty......hmmm location for the hardcore to keep at it....what about these new and haalcyon days of licensing in yonder green and peasant land?)

Perhaps an Access all activities badge for noolers :)

Promotion is such a tricky question. Sometimes yuo get a full house by word of mouth, sometimes you get 5 people for every 100 quid you spent on flyers and posters.

EDIT: what's the situation with fly posting in Manc anyway...it can get severely scarey and dangerous in belfast...the 2 big promoters who run all the big gigs employ thugs and they tear everyone smaller's stuff down and get very nasty with the people themselves.....including giving a jazzdude I know a phone call to explain that any more posters and the attendance would be the the least of his worries on the night.......put, he said, in a manner worthy od dino vercotti "as it is mr $JAZZER I don't recall the date of your event, and as long as i see no more postsers for it, that will remain the case. And that would be to your advantage" or something.

[1]it should be noted that i was aware of and in utter awe of, Mr Hannet's exceptional band control technique, long before 24hpp. I'm not nealy as big a cunt or as big a genius tho.

I've heard the same in MancLand.Never fancied it! Even if I didn't "sleep with the fishes",I've heard the fines being from £50 to a bloody grand!

I'm looking at the publicity channels at the moment. Tying in with Cancer Research means we get all their publicity channels as well. There will still be a lot to do in and around Manchester for sure, so all advice and help appreciated.

Before I can go too far advanced with this though, I need some definites, like venue and date. Still looking at Jabez Clegg over Easter, whether it should be Easter Saturday rather than Monday we'll have to see.

I'll have to look on train schedules tonight see if they are running as regular on the Monday.

Thanks Google for bringing this one back up! How simple it all seemed back then. Besides Manchester as the choice of venue, we managed to pull the rest of it off I think, just about.

It's all gone very quiet on the ULU owing us money front, the cost of pursuing the debt is probably greater than the debt itself now.
