Obvious reasons for suggesting that we support a charity in the holding of this event. It means that some good will come of the event, as well as being a great day.

It also means that we get ready-made backing and a degree of sponsorship, and increases the likelihood of celebrities endorsing what we are doing.

I have proposed Cancer Research for a number of reasons, we all know people whose lives have been affected by cancer. Please give this suggestion (and this event) your support.

it's a good plan. but how do you see this being done? Should we put a donation surcharge on admission, or do we go the whole hog, and when all's done and dusted, pay the creditors and donate the rest?

Bit of a can of worms really...i mean celebs, sponsorship? I wanna get shitefaced and talk to all you cunts. you really wanna go the whole way on this one then?

I dunno, this is SNSS paranoia....the events we put real effort into are the ones that fall right on their ass every time, the lash-ups always work out. Essentially, this is our party, if we can chuck a few quid to something more useful than the brewery, more the better. My concern is that if we overscale the thing, and overdo the costs, there's a chance we'll be chargin ourselves stupid money, and a nasty chance it could go well and truly tits up.

we organized a pissup for the college music dept a few times and basically got drunk on stage with our instruments. we charged people a quid each in to cover the 50 bills the place had cost us. When the 50 quid was achieved, we told the guy on the door to charge what he liked...we made 120 quid, which got split between the 6 poor bastards who stayed behind to clear up. it's not a bad plan to take the piss when you've covered your ass :)

yes for Cancer btw....NO did their bit for our brother fan, we'll do ours.

nice one, I'll push all the faders up, if you need me I'll be at the bar :)

What are you, the london symphony bloody orchestra. Might take you 2 hours to soundcheck with some inhouse guy, I'll have you off the stage in 10 mins :D

(hmmmm,, 2 hours soundchecks might be something to do with this business of constant noodling)

RIGHT THEN, WHO WANTS TO START FIGHTING ABOUT RUNNING ORDER

2 hour soundchecks have more to do with us on occasion forgetting to plug the keyboards in! Tends to fuck up the sequencer tracks a bit

Running order? Simple.

1st band (Re: Order?) 2nd band (Digital's JD set?) 3rd band (Jack's band?) 4th band (Flight?) 2nd set by 2nd band (Digital's NO set) 2nd set by 1st band (Re: Order to send everyone home happy)

DJ sets in between, plus half hour karaoke slot using some of our sequencer tracks for the brave/pissed.

Don't take all the fun out of it fucker !

Yeah, factor in SNSS as filler as well, I'll only have maybe 4 tunes worthy of doing, if I even bother....more likely I'll eat all my words and smoke a turd in hell and all that and just play/sing over ... a a a. i can't even say it

Last 2 or 3 live tunes should be the NOOL allstars. but the thought of scrapping out who gets to play bass...jeeeeez.....26 singers is cool, tho.

It takes us about 5 mins to soundcheck - in other words turn on tune up and play half a song!

We're happy to go on whenever you want us

LOL...from primadonas to plebs, I'm gonna have a fun day :)

trust me, all of you, no matter how well, or how badly behaved y'all think you are, I've seen better and worse :)

TBH, every gig I did IN college was so horrendous that by the time I got outta there, I started thinking that 4 bands in a night was a gentle gig.

And as for earning real money, slumped over a mixer with a big drink and some complimentary pizza or whatever, doind sound for ONE band who knew what they were doing....ha that made me feel like a theif.

Any time SNSS actually soundcheck, it ends up being a 90 minute jam, that's invariably better than the set will be later, fortunately with doing so many gigs in clubs, and DJ's being such utter igoranti of any source that doesn't spin round, our usuasl soundcheck is some git givin us the thumb to show he's got something on our channel. Hardly important when the mixer's on stage mind you.

We are actually one of the more organised bands you will see, with a setlist for the sound man that includes what needs to be faded up and when, a full stage plan, everything that I always wished for as a sound man when I was starting out!

Just a quick post...I have found out today that a relative has cancer, so any support for Cancer Research would be a great help.

Cheers Colin. I'm trying to act 'normal' (if I ever have done!) just to take my mind off it a while, but I really feel like kicking the shit out of something at the moment. I'm so fucking angry. It's a fucking shitty disease and the sooner someone finds a cure for it, the better.

the karaoke and disco are what might be called "running order irrelevent". They wont pose any kind of a challenge, and can be done between bands.

Anyone who thinks that karaoke is a good idea should listen to Mike's Apollo cd.

Anyone with EARS would then agree it's a GREAT idea!

All together now...

Dur der der derrr dur der der derr dur der der derr der derrr!

boom bash boom bash

Oh..I thought we were doing the full accapella AoC :(

I bet you a tenner, that after they hear a band come off that stage that not one fucker will want to do karaoke. they'll think they'll be going out at the same volume....and in fairnes,, if they were DiggyMike, or any of the apollo male voice choir, they'd be right.

Anyone else, I think you'll find your efforts will NOT be inflicted on all and sundry at the same sound pressure levels as those fookers what can play.

The "plan" would be to get as many well voiced and mixed recordings of the MIDI's to use as backing. And apply a little light pitch correction and a touch of a delicate vocal plate verb. The "reality" will be me batch processing New Order's back catalogue through one of those midrange phase inversion deals[1] a week before the gig. hmmmm there's a thought, I wonder if those things will work at all on stuff from mp3 (anyone know if mp3 encodes L+R or M+S?), they be pish at the best of times. And bunging the mic through antares auto tune set to "cher" and a fookin Lexicon Multifx set to "sinead O'connor" (so much delay and verb you can't perceive what note's being sung long enough to decide if it's out of tune :) )

[1] upi have a tape deck with "karaoke" function? same thing with controls. They are no better at actually getting rid of vocals, but they do leave SOME of the track alone.

You could do it for charity... I would say do it 50% for NOOL's operation and 50% for some other charity...

50% to go to the running costs of NOOL? Nope. NOOL has its own funding streams, shall we say. This event will only happen on the scale we want it to if it is done for charitable causes. It has never been thought of as an event to raise running costs for NOOL.

If NOOL is financially stable then it's COOL!

and mucho respect to you for driving this forward.

driving? trailing our lazy asses kicking and screaming :) fair play to the man.

the thought that I get to make a big noise, half a fucking ball with all you guys AND put a few quid in a deserving pocket makes me quite giddy actually:)

It's more a case of NOOL's funding coming from different, and international sources. A number of us across the world have contributed financially to NOOL, and will continue to do so. Merchandising also brings in revenue to pay the hosting fees. No doubt Spotnick will advise on other sources of income.

The purposes of this NOOL Day are to do our bit collectively for a charitable cause, as well as having a great time. As previously said, most of our lives have been affected in some way by cancer, and I feel that doing the event we plan this way can make a positive contribution, and shows our resolve in trying to help.

There's a lot to do with the planning and organisation of this event. We've made a good start, but there is always more to do. With everyone's help and determination to succeed, we will have a memorable day.

The sort of thing I am looking for now is support from businesses - things like van hire companies, printers, even PA hire companies. If anyone works for any such firm and can persuade the bosses that they will be supporting a very worthwhile cause (and will be able to offset tax on Gift Aid, etc), then please let me know. They will be well rewarded in the advertising. I'd be especially grateful to hear from PA hire firms!

Just a suggestion....

Is it possible to have a locked sticky at the top of the forum which you can edit as we go along;

-stating what's been decided -what's needed and -what's still being decided...

then you could have spin off threads (as you've got now) with comments (from all and sundry) relating to the decision making process...

Then people who are easily confused (like me) have one place where they can go to see the state of play..?

Just an idea...

P.S. If you need anyone to help with general stuff, on the day, or the day before I'd be willing to give a hand... (I'm pretty sure I'll be there, but depends on the date etc... etc...) Maybe you need a bunch of us for 'dogsbody' duties???

Good plan. we need an official, Mod only sticky, then a bunch of threads to discuss things and call Maya names :)

As for crew, With me and Tim, and the few others who sort of know the score, plus a few enthusiasts who want to know what the hell goes on before a gig and don't mind humping speakers, we'll muddle through. As long as we're in the place at a reasonable hour, don't start getting carried away rigging lights and flying speakers (the place isn't big enough to justify flying speakers is it?), it'll work out OK. We let the band's, presumably under OldMonkey's whip, sort the stage, just how they like it; while 4 or 5 of us setup the speakers, desk, multicore and amps. Then we send the band(s) away for nosebag and put the monitors in around their gear, and roughly position the drum mics and other bits and pieces ready for a proper dig at a soundcheck when feeding time is over. Maybe that's not how it's normally done round your parts, but from both sides, I fucking hate having monitors and mic cables being run round the band's feet when they're setting up. Better to let them get happy, get rid of them, do the annoying things, then get down to work.

BTW, in my head, this place is sort of "lesser Free trade hall as depicted in 24hpp-sized, but less shitty and with a bar and a low stage". And I'm, currently working on the assumption that we are doing a full sound mix rather than some vocals and keyboards and a smidge of re-enforcement. That's two side of the triangle, but the third, which literally only just popped up in my mind is this.... What kind of sound level are we looking to create. Are we going to try and get a full on concert racket happening? IS that appropriate for the intended purpose of NOOLday (being, primarily, social interaction). If we make big noise, is there somewhere quieter in the building people can come and go to freely to chat and chill. ARE we, as I envisage, going to be relaxed about change-out times, and have long periods of disco or amusing karaoke in between bands, Or are we gonna do all the bands at once and do festival style changeovers, and if so, before or after "quiet time". It would, in a way, be a litle bit of a shame if far from being a chance for us to hang out it turned into something akin to a NO gig, frantic drinking followed by losing each other in the noise and crush :) then again, it'll be mainly us lot anyway.

Sorry, I'm just thinking out loud rather than asking serious questions. Tho the sooner I can pin down the holy volum triangle the better.... 1.Size 2.Level of Re-enforcement (all in, or just a bit of make up volume and vocal amplification) and 3.Intended ambient volume.(recital/pub/club/gig/armageddon/NO-apollo14)

I mean, I'm up for blowing the bloody doors off if you are, but can we afford it (OldMonkey, the answer to that based on what i have here is that the doors will remain on :) ) and is that what we want anyway?

jeez, that is a bit on the big side. well we should be able to make a fair old din down one end and people can chill up t'other. We're not filling that with big noise for wee money anyway. So I'd say things will work out OK. At least it'll take some proper PA....there's nothing worse than sitting at a huge mixer, plugged into 2X100 cabs :)

Steve, have you tried this...

Extra Boy

It's a bit hit and miss, but amazing on Pixies tracks, completely nukes vocals and leaves the guitars alone.

nope, but I will. And the thing listed under it looks like a bundle of laughs for when the brain drops outta gear.

NO songs will be a fuckbag to do I just KNOW it, there's so much slapback/ADT to broaden Bernard's voice on so many tunes.

I think I tried a few NO tracks and it failed miserably. Try Debaser.

i'll have a fidget at some tomorrow. I have a sort of half arsed idea that dropping the right pre-processing in might just clinch it :)

I take it back, with a bit of messing it does work ok NO if you muck about with the settings, although you lose a bit of other bits. For instance on Love Vig it wipes the Melodica out. Although I guess you can get round that with real time adjusting.

Just listening to WFTSC minus Barney..weird
