just going back over still and sister ray 'should hear our version of l l wow' from curtis. well do any versions exist??

Just about every gig that had more than one Manchester band on the bill at this time ended with Jon the Postman getting up on stage as the roadies were packing up, and starting to sing Louie Louie, very badly. It became such a popular occurrence that the bands used to come back on and provide him with a backing track.

The Moonlight gig where Ian made the Louie Louie quote was one such gig. I can't remember whether they were headlining this night (I think not) but pretty sure that the evening would have ended with Jon the Postman, and maybe some members of JD helping out as the backing band.

they just did it once and the night had not been recorded..But we can see them on 24HParty people ..Or i'd better say: we can dream/believe we've seen them. NB:i don't think THe KingMen would like their drunkard'cover!

Sure about this Jean Noel? Never seen any evidence that this ever happened. We know they did a few other covers early on, like Riders On The Storm and The Passenger, but nobody has ever come up with any evidence of Louie Louie that wasn't based on Ian's quote.

Anyone who ever learned to play by fucking around....ie how JD learned to play....played LL in their bedroom with their mates. Fact of life ;) and now some supposition and conjecture... I doubt they ever played it at a gig (except as accompaniment to the local Royal mail nutter, as mentioned). I would rather suspect that Sis Ray was another carry over from early jams, hence the quip.

Right before Novelty from the Factory gig (on Disc 4 of Heart and Soul) one punter yells out for Louie Louie, so presumably it was vaguely familiar to those in Manc who had seen them at their early gigs?

24hpp shows them playing the song with other musicians and John Le FActeur.I did believe it was true, but maybe it's just a legend. As said A;Wilson:"beetween History and legend, choose the legend"... Any way i don't think they played the song in a JD'gig.

I saw some v.early gigs, but never saw them do SR, not even in Manchester. I have never heard it talked about either. I wasn't at the Moonlight 2/4/80 myself, but I am pretty certain that there was no LL with John The Postman.

Well Ive not heard of it surfacing but have heard that they used to jam on it with other bands at shows etc... Im sure it was only really a piss about and not really worth getting excited about.

By the way the song is not a Kingsmen song... It was written and recorded by Richard Berry originally. Originally the chord sequence was a 4/4 G/C alternation using 7 chords (jazz chords) throughout but it got changed by garage rockers who were hard of hearing to the A D Em D combo... The Sonics version mutates it further like this into F A B flat A... Everybody has played this in the world ever.
