Right, ok. I do vaguely know Graham through work, and know that he has seen Transmission on one occasion, in Birmingham around July last year, he mailed me about it. He's also seen us three or four times and Re: Order about half a dozen. No doubt he will respond in his own fashion....and yes he is visually impaired actually!
The way I see it is that while Transmission and Digital do ostensibly plough a similar furrow musically in terms of both doing JD stuff, they do it in totally different ways. Digital, like Re: Order, have I suppose become the NOOL "house bands" through our contributions to this site over the last few years, and have worked hard to build up a decent following of NOOLers, plus an increasing number of people who do not frequent this site but have heard about us through word of mouth. Most importantly though, we've done it on our terms. We play sporadically, when we feel like it, and only if it doesn't impinge on family life etc. We certainly won't be traipsing all round the country playing to three men and a recently-deceased dog at our ages! For us, the social side of it is the only reason we play, we do it because we enjoy the social craic with the people from this site, exactly the same way as we do when New Order are playing. At the end of the day it's just an excuse for a piss-up, and if people like the music then even better.
Transmission's approach would appear to be to build up a large MySpace following and do loads of gigs all over the place - good luck if it works, but I do suspect that this approach would be better with original material. Sound-wise it seems pretty much on the money, but I know from years of experience that a crowd going to see a tribute band expect a bit of authenticity there as well in terms of appearance, equipment, stage set-up, even setlist. Just look at how well Re: Order's Kingston setlist was received, when they played the same set that New Order had done in their only ever Kingston appearance. It's sort of just playing someone else's songs at the moment, not a tribute act as they are widely accepted. If that works for you then fair enough, personally I would feel we were falling short if we didn't have the degree of authenticity we do have.
I also think that you'll have to contribute a bit to the community here as well guys before you manage to avoid allegations of being interlopers, rather than just posting lists of dates and then getting the arse with anyone who is critical. Good luck with it, and keep playing those good tunes!
