Brixton Academy April 1987

I was having a proper clearout of some boxes buried deep in a cupboard (need the room) and found my long lost copy of this gig on that old fashioned VHS thing... So i dug out my old video player and sat down and watched it.

What an absolute beauty- I bet I haven't watched it in 15 years. Great set list, all brilliantly played... Odd "framing" graphics by someone who must have just bought their effects generator and that odd interview cut into DNE! All very strange. Why not play the gig and stick the interview at the end?

But the strangest thing that I don't remember noticing before was barney's gurning and strange actions. He looks like some invisible ghost is trying to put him in an armlock! And after cracking up halfway through one of the songs he gets himself back together by pulling the best big Elvis lip I think I've ever seen. Legend, absolute legend!

That was his 'dance' for 86/87 - lots of shadow boxing and examining his own armpit.

Have said this here before, but for the 191th time, one of the music rags (Melody Maker, I think?) actually ran a news report on this gig (at the front of the rag, rather than the genuine reviews section) slating Barney for his 'dancing' at Brixton saying he was just riling an already tempestuous crowd.

I was almost pissing my pants when I saw him doing the armpit examination. Kind of reminded me of that truism that no-one can get their elbow in their mouth. But barney's giving it a good go in front of thousands... I was thinking he must have been a victim of whatever narcotic concotion he was tanked up on (in the interview Hook and Morris seem to be burning bright on something too)

Brilliant gig too. I guess there must be some wicked bootlegs about of it. maybe a mixer tape exists?

Yeah, agree totally... Not sure that Confusion works very well at this gig. But I've heard it work brilliantly live on a few occasions- particularly 83-85 gigs.

I was wondering why "touched" was cut from the official release (thought maybe Maradonna had taken out some kind of injunction against em )

I thought there was a radio broadcast of this show?

And didn't Johan Scott once admit to being the guy, er, "body popping" atop someone's shoulders during "Confusion"??

And how, exactly, did Bernard's idiosyncratic dancing rile up the crowd???!!!??

I always felt that the cut to the interview,all though informative,was poorly timed on this one....As DNE was kicking in,it sounded fucking brilliant,better than i've ever heard it,Live or recorded leaving me wishing I was there...The bass was spot on,loud as fuck.Just how I like it.

The reason for all the video effects is that it was directed by Mike 'Cue The Music' Mansfield. I remember being a little disappointed with New Order that night - it was a short set because Bronski Beat were headlining and I preferred the Woolwich gig a couple of days before...

Don't remember who kindly fixed this (got it on sharingthegroove a hundred years ago), but here's a stellar mp3 of DNE from the Academy vid, with the Hooky speaking bit cleverly edited out - you'd never know it didn't appear this way on the video!

Cheers for that Drew, been meaning to do some editing on the footage god knows how it'll turn out.

This thread inspired me to pull out my dodgy old converted to dvd version of this show and it is a good one. When they put Taras on as a bounus to 316, I had really hoped the next dvd would include either this show or PFD as the next bonus. Why not release two more dvds now that the band is in hiatus again: NYC '05 with PFD '85 and then Glasgow '06 with Academy '87?

I've got PFD on official DVD release.

It's only available in Japan, as far as I know.

It is also, it must be said, fairly crap

Is this the gig when Hooky's bassline on 'Sunrise' is completely out of sync with the rest of the stuff going on?

No they didn't play 'Sunrise' at this gig, i think (if my memory serves me)your thinking of the Town and country club 86...

Nah, never heard a mixer. A DVD Rip is probably the best you'll get. Only bootleg I remember of it back at that time was way too bassy. Touched was just a Wall of Noise. Little wonder it failed to make the final cut.

yeah we were spoiled at Woolwich were'nt we Phill...

its bad when your instruments are more in tune than your singing. nevertheless a good video though.

Cheers, Drew! That was one of the very first edit jobs I've ever done. It simply HAD to be done. Then it was duly weeded here (before the move, I had enough posts to qualify) and seeded at STG (back in the day when you could still seed officially released, but not available anymore recordings).
