Could this be the ULTIMATE list?

Hello to one and all, after the recent debacles over what New Order songs qualify as 'The Best' which uncontrollably spread-eagle over every thread and topic the worlds ever seen and usually ends in a massive scrap where no man or woman ever agrees and as such puts your off your dinner. Anyway, here is a small experiment which should establish (fairly easily and hopefully without injury) an ultimate OrderLine faithful master list based on actual facts! - without the need to exceed 2.5 million posts.

Okay here goes:

Step 1) Pick your favourite '2' songs from each 'official' album release... 1 Monkey 2 Powder, Custard and Lumps 3 Shelf-Life 4 Battletank 5 Technical 6 Reproduction 7 Getting Things Ready

Step 2) Pick your favourite '2' songs from ANY 'single' release... Topped with a helping of Godzilla Worms with Motors Trump Fast Shellfish

and so on.

If we all don't argue about each others choices too much by adding the variables together we will finally compile a 'genuine' ultimate list. 16 final songs... can we do it?

God be with you... it is your destiny.

There isn't 2 decent songs on Movement though Huntsy

otherwise good plan...I take it the single relaeses can also include B-sides

Dreams Never End was the 1 good song. A few others were ok but Chosen Time instead of a 3rd song off Technique/Low Life wouldn't be right at all.

Okay, Huntsy, I'll try to do this in stages; it's too hard to do all at once.

I own a copy of Movement, but I'm not sure I've ever actually listened to it. But then I must have, to decide I didn't care to return. Anyway, as a result, I will reserve my two choices for later use elsewhere.

PCL: AOC, 586, Leave Me A Loan.

By the way, after listening to the above last night, I have the following question for you: do you really think that Regret is better than Leaving Moline?

And have the natives stopped being mean to you?

There. That's enough for now.

Technicolor: Varnishing Paint. Reserve one choice for later use.

I have a question about Low Life. My copy includes both PK and Subculture, but those were also singles, right? So would PK and Subculture count as picks from Loafer?

Hmmmm, methinks there is a fatal flaw in this clever selection process. No mention is made of Substance which is mainly made up of singles not on albums so 2 choices from this isn't nearly enough. i.e. only 2 choices from Ceremony, Temptation, Blue Monday, Thieves Like Us, True Faith, 1963, Lonesome Tonight etc. I couldn't leave any of these songs from a best of. Would it not be better to have 6 choices from singles in order to have a definitive top 20? Apologies for my nitpicking.

Anyway for the record, my choices would be: Dreams Never End/Denial Age of Consent/Your Silent Face Love Vigilantes/This Time of Night BLT/All Day Long Run/Vanishing Point Regret/Special

True Faith 1963

Republicans and Democrats: World and Spooky; sorry, Huntsy, I'm not going to waste one of my choices on Regrettable Mistake. I almost picked Young Offender though.

Substance doesn't count... that is a best of compilation, not an 'official' original and unique release.

Patrick, Leave Me Alone vs. Regret... impossible to chose. I refer my answer to the replies given over the last couple of days - it stays with equal priority in the Huntsman best of list.

Come on fellas, we've almost cracked it! - try to steer away from discussing the merits or lackoff.

Subculture could be included as an album track and a single, as they appeared to us in this way. A wasted choice though, its up to you whether or not the single or album version is the best, and whether or not the album version and single deserve best of choices twice. This is the closest you'll get on this one to having a 'remix' on this ultimate album.

Very happy with peoples choices up to now. Encouraging selection from 'El Jarvo... forgot about Ceremony as a single choice (shit). I see no appearance of Rocking the Shithouse!!.. I see, when all said and done is this just average?

The Village and Leave Me Alone are suffering much resistance from Age of Consent and Your Silent Trumps... who will win?

Zico New Order have always been an album band... so, album takes preference over singles.. sorry.

Remember - no fights, just down to business. No further 'nit-picking' please.

Heh. I have already made a CD-R for a friend last week according to that formula! Altho, in my version I added some songs from the Peel Sessions '98 (so I could sneak in Isolation)... And no songs from Get Ready, because he had already heard all those songs. These are the songs that made it to the CD:

Ceremony In A Lonely Place Dreams Never End Chosen Time The Village Your Silent Face Love Vigilantes This Time of Night Paradise Broken Promise Mr Disco Dream Attack Young Offender Special True Faith (98) TBTHOG (98) Isolation (98)

Patrick you have put 4 from Low-Liner you cheeky monkey. I can't follow you you've posted that many variations... good old Patty, the only one I thought would definately keep it all nice and neat. You've got me all of a pickled onion. I tried my best to plead with everyone not to spread it out like peanut butter on a misplaced cooking spoon. It was like talking to a mute pidgeon, swooping with alacrity.

Maria... nice compilation, I hope your friend was pleased with that! - The only disappointing aspect was the inclusion of True Fat 1998 instead of the sublime original, however, your decision to burn Mr. Dishcloth overrides this momentary lack of respect for your elders and goes some way in convincing us all that you have a touch of genius. Raw choices - excellent results.

Well, Huntsy, I'm sorry I didn't follow directions very well. It's kind of like giving you fifteen choices as my top five. But you know I mean well; except when it comes to a certain title that starts with "R".

I don't know how to satisfy you Patty... firstly, I attempt to provoke a top 5 out of you and you say no, I can't... it has to be a top 15... then, I give you ample opportunity to select a perfect top 15, and, you want a top 5.

Let me ask you this... if you walked into a garage sale on your neighborhood (i'm trying to utilise US speak here) on a saturday, and you had 15 cents in your pocket (you lucky boy). Your up for buying something and that money is burning a hole thorugh your bomber jacket. Anway, as if like some divine intervention... a table opens up in front of you. 3 fat pies smoulder in front of you:

1st pie is apple and stinks just swell for 7.5 cents 2nd pie is mainly meat based with a few onions to go again at 7.5 cent 4th pie is a mystery but sniffs the best and is 14 cents

You could select both 1 and 2 pies and be digesting great things with a medium to high knowlege of expectancy... or, you could through caution to the windy and go for pie 4... which could be a bomb?

Patrick... which set of circumstances could the above evolve into?

Pie 4... is obviously the most expensive and would negate the opportunity to buy any of the other 2 fat smouldering pies.

That's easy, Huntsy. I don't like apple pie and I don't like surprises. So I'd go with pie #2 and save the other 7.5 cents. Does that make everything clear?

But surely I gave you approximately 15 delightfully wonderful never disappointing always pleasing perpetually amusing singable danceable heart-warming tear-jerking beautiful perfect songs, didn't I?

Yes but they were all over the place so I thought I'd have a moan instead.

Today Patrick... your a really 'UP' person. Has something spurred you on in life to cause this?

I've counted them and I think I actally picked 16.

I'd like to say that last night (after the 1 hour download of the hit song 'Like a Doberman') - my good lady was dancing to the aformentioned tune!!! - Buster had entered the Huntsman house and volumes were high. Was a very emotional moment for us all. Interesting differences between Buster's music and my own.

Sebbsy... public access to Huntsman's musical attic ...... mmmmmmmm..... I don't think I could cope with the fan mail! :hat:

I think Klumpy said it was a 'Temptation rip-off' originally..does it sound like the aforementioned tune?

Feeling quite jealous!

After the nice comments by Huntsy, I feel euphorical and give away the magical address for the song.

It's just a page with the song name - click on it for download.

Beware though, it's almost 7 MB.

Sebbsy it was Buster's tune that was 'Temptation-esque' and not mine.

If your e-mailing Geoffy then I'm sure he will send you the link to Huntsman's site for sore eyes. Geoff's downloads are tip-top quality at a gargantuan 6MB +, whereas I knocked my MPEG quality down a bit to 2.5MB ish for quick download speeds. I'm still in the ice age with a 56kbps modem that can never quite get connected any faster than 18kbps.

Comparing the 2 songs (Huntsy's and mine) is quite interesting cos it shows how the similar influence (NO) can give way to such different songs.

By the way, mine's not really a 'Temptation' rip off. I'd rather say it's a sobng 'à la Temptation'...

Huntsy...I was referring to Klumpys 'Temptation influenced 'tune-does it reflect the genius of the original?

Actually, Huntsy, if you have previously undisclosed clout with authorities here, I wish you would have a word with the Postal Service. We haven't had any mail deliveries since Monday because of anthrax in the main post office and now they are talking about burning all the undelivered mail. This is actually NO-related since I had ordered some irregular NO CD's that have not been delivered. So, do you know anybody in the post office?

I have to open any unexpected mail at my work with a pair of Latex gloves. Which I sort of enjoy wearing actually...like two big Johnnies on each hand..

Just sent you an email with Huntsy's link...

Pastie, just this very morning my partner decided to use a 'scalpel' to open one envelope we had received that looked quite suspicious. It was conspicuous by its very poor handwriting and he was genuinely scared the package may have contained chicken pox or anthrax or possibly a minor case of the flu. In case your worried, it was a job application by a teacher... he threw it in the bin, whereas I reply to all job applications being such a standup kind of Huntsman.

Pats I HATE IT when mail your expecting doesn't come through the system... burning mail that has stacked up because of non-delivery is heart-wrenching. I might write to my local MP on your behalf but cannot promise guaranteed delivery of your spurious New Order material. Good luck with that one Pats... I hope they haven't burnt confirmation that you've won a major prize!?

Sebbsy please don't give that link out to all and sundry... you have been placed with a confidential piece of material and it would be a breach of our trust should you reveal its content to anyone but yourself. This meeting of minds is something me and the Buster have been planning for about 3 months so excuse us both if it sounds like we are trying to keep anything from you... we aren't. Buster, I know you wouldn't have handed the link out to just anyone, a mans personal work is as private as his teethbrush. Seb, let us know your thoughts after you've shifted all that filth off your mates machine. Klumpy's hit single is absolutely the most 'out there' piece of music you could ever come across. Highlight for me was the sound of Buster's silky smooth vocal chords and the very raw keyboard to guitar to drum machine ratio. Last minute is a criscendo of untold proportions... expect the unexpected (literally). In comparison, mine sounds like mainstream Jimmy.

Crisps.

Thanks again Klumpy.

Well Buster its not all praise... after all, I did say that a 2 million pound a day producer could transform it into an underground hit aka Daft Punk? - so, surely that puts the balance right. What I could hear from it was a unique and decent voice, a proper hit trying to get out and a great deal of raw energy... that's my 'honest' appraisal.

As a matter of interest Bust... I've just tried clicking to download my own MP3 and it goes to a new page and tries to load into a web browser page!? - how the heck did you manage it!?

You know, Huntsy, I'm very far from being the king of self-confidence. And what you said confirmed what I think deep inside : that with proper producing help, it could give something interesting.

But I have no musical knowledge and only have an old 4-track tape recorder.

For your link, I don't know. When I downloaded from here, yesterday, it worked normally. But yesterday evening, at home, it did the same thing as yours...

Weird...
