My first post: Introduction, Impressions, Questions

Hi guys and girls. I'm a New Order and Electronic fan from the Boston, Massachusetts area. Lately I listen to New Order and Electronic more than anyone else, in my car and before I go to sleep at night. I really dove (dived?) into cool music like New Order, Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins, Pet Shop Boys, Dead Can Dance, etc. after my Junior year in High School which was '89. I also listen to dance music like deep house, reggae and dub, '80s pop hits, and a little salsa. I went to cool underground club nights from 1990 to about 1993 but slowed down when grunge pushed out the Manchester dance/rock I was into, and techno pushed out deep-house. Earlier this year I put together a continuous mix of the stuff I remember in the clubs in the early '90s. It's really narrow in focus and doesn't include the house and other dance stuff I love like KLF. Here is the link if you're interested.

But back to New Order and Electronic. I slightly prefer their dance-oriented music but as a fan of early '90s British alternative rock I can really appreciate the guitar stuff. Basically I like melody and good singing. I usually find Bernard's voice to be pleasant if not technically proficient. To me he represents the average person like me who likes to sing in the shower and have a little dream in the back of my head to be rock or pop star. I do find his studio work more precise than his live performance--and I am understating just how much of a difference there is. Also, for a guy involved with such cool music and cool people, on stage he does move around a bit like a geek. He has great style and a good look, but his dancing is funny. I almost feel bad for him. Does he ever look in a mirror while rehearsing in his bedroom? :happytongue: Last week I bought the 316 and 501 dvds. While I enjoyed watching them as a fan, I do realize that I am more of a fan of their studio work.

So on to my questions. Please forgive me if they have been asked and answered before.

1. Unless the band is playing over a programmed dance track, does New Order really omit traditional bass lines in their live show?

2. Is Bernard gay? Certain lyrics in "1963" and "The Perfect Kiss" lead me to think so.

3. Where can I find the version of "World in Motion" where the lyrics are "We've got the world in motion" as opposed to "Love's got the world in motion." I know there is a version on the cd maxi-single but the music is very remixed.

I'll post more questions another time if they come to me when I'm near a computer.

Go buy the single, I prefer the remix with those lyrics. Plus with the single there is the track "Such a Good Thing"

Welcome to the Atrocity Exhibition. To answer your questions in order....

1. No, Hooky plays live bass on all tracks, including some that didn't feature any bass guitar on record (World). They use sequencers for parts of songs, but all songs contain live parts as well - listen to any bootleg and you'll soon tell from the mistakes !
2. Ask his wife. Not that it has any relevance on here, the band's personal life is just that, personal, and isn't discussed on here.
3. One of the remixes has those lyrics - wasn't it on Retro ?

Thanks KnownPleasures. I understand Peter Hook plays bass on stage, but he plays it like a guitar so you don't get the actual bass notes that you do on album. I believe on album he overdubs traditional bass lines and then his unique style on top of that.

Regarding Bernard's personal life, thank you and I will take note of that policy.

I don't own Retro yet so I will check it out.

The No Alla Violenza mix of WIM is the only one with those lyrics. No further purchases required on your part...

Chris, you answered my question about the bass lines. Although I don't think EVERY live song has a sequenced bass line playing underneath the live players. So I really think they just go without a proper bass line on their more rock numbers.

Ooh bitchy Josh, the only way to be. I've got the "alla no valenzia" (or however it's spelt) mix of World In Motion but only on the 12" remix vinyl release, haven't seen it anywhere else.

Yeah, it's also on the U.S. "World in Motion" maxi-single. The thing is, I'm almost sure I remember the "We've got the world in motion" lyrics on a track that was not so completely remixed like the No Alla Violenza mix because I remember being surprised when I later heard, "Love's got the world in motion" after I had heard what I thought was the original. Oh well. Thanks for all the responses on this.
