Round and Round with harmony

Just an impulse post:

I am happy that The Best of New Order has the version of Round and Round with the extra harmony overdub. I've been wanting it for a while and now I finally have it. I didn't want to have to burn off my 12"...and now that I think of it I'm not even sure if that version is on teh 12".

I think the version on "Best of" is one of those cleaned up versions (like True Faith '94) which was the same recording as before but made to sound "less eighties" or something, so it isn't quite the same as the original...

Or that could be garbage!

The R&R-94 version was a cleaned-up version to make it sound more up-to-date, but when I still listen to both versions of R&R, it still sounds "dated," although it's still one of my favorite songs.

You guys are gonna make me haul my vinyl to work and listen, but I am almost sure the version with the extra harmony track came out at the same time as the other "Round and Round" remixes.

the '94 remix is weak compared to the original. the extra harmony makes it sound super cheesy.

I guess it's a matter of taste. The only New Order song I find cheesy is "Rock the Shack." :)

It's essentially the same as Stephen Hague's 7" mix from 1989 with perhaps a little less reverb.

Yeah, everyone gets mixed up about this one - possibly the people who mainly buy New Order's albums rather than singles.

Technique came out in early 1989 with the original, New Order-produced 'Round & Round'. That version was then remixed to make those "club" mixes on that cutesy 3 inch Remix CD single. The actual 7 and twelve inch mixes were re-recorded with Stephen Hague, not long after Technique came out, hence the extra harmonies and different arrangement.

That, re-recorded seven inch mix was then remastered with a little tweaking for 'The Best Of' in 1994. The only really noticable difference is the wide stereo panning of the opening orchestra hits, and the lack of delays on Barney's voice in the verse ("Done to me, done to me, done to me", etc.)

I think many people think 'Round & Round 94' was a brand new mix made for the best of, if they've never heard the 1989 single version. My favourite is the 12 Inch extended Stephen Hague version, for that nice long instrumental build-up, but the Technique version sounds less dated when you hear it now.

There's also a nippy little "Edit" on some American CD promos of the original album version that would've made a nice single version to!

Great information ANDY.Now what are the versions on the DJ PROMO in the very smart cover called.I always get mixed up with these.At the time they came out there were about 10 different versions of ROUND AND ROUND as one mag did a TOP 10 NEW ORDER ROUND AND ROUND .Very confusing and i am not entirely sure which is which. The one you mentioned with the long intro is SUPERB though. Cheers ROCKET MICK ;)

Okay, now let's see...

I have a Round & Remix 12" (the one with loads of Little Louis all over the front in boxes) which was an official release. That has Club Mix, Detroit Mix and Best & Marsh. There was also a DJ promo in a plain cover simply with 'Neworder Round & Round' written on, which contains Club Mix, Ben Grosse Twelve Inch Mix and the Detroit Mix - same as the three inch CD single.

Another booming confusing thing about these mixes is that there is a "12 Inch" version (the Stephen Hague Extended Mix) as well as a "Twelve Inch Mix" (the Ben Grosse one mentioned above. To cap it all they both have a running time of 6:50 - but don't be fooled, they are two different mixes!

Adding insult to injury, the French 2 CD 'International' bonus disc has the Stephen Hague 12 Inch, but incorrectly calls it the 'Kevin Sanderson 12 Inch Mix'! 'International', incidentally, has the original 1989 Stephen Hague single version of 'Round & Round' on the first disc.

There ends your 'Round & Round' history lesson.
