My own private "Retro"!

I've just spent a couple of days testing out my new PC's Sound Forge and CD Architect software, by digitally capturing my old New Order vinyl using my Technics 1210 Mk3 and a fancy, expensive Preamp. With some of my rarest and most treasured vinyl edited to remove any silence at the start and the end, and a Noise Reduction plug-in used to remove any really bad vinyl cracks, I think I've made a lovely job of recording as-near-as-perfect versions of these old vinyl tracks onto CD.

I thought I'd bang my favourites on to five CDs, in my attempt at a more "fan-friendly" version of 'Retro', and I'm very chuffed with the results. Sound Forge has a nice normalizer than can increase overall volume without digital clipping, so I've managed to get a professional volume level equal to that of the remastered tracks on the released version of 'Retro'. I based my own 'Retro Revisited' on the original five-disc format, but changed the categories slightly to accomodate the unreleased vinyl tracks, rather than existing album tracks.

Have a look at the tracklist, and see what you think of my selections... All but the "Live" disc are in rough chronological order, and I kept the rare tracks on the fifth disc, along with some even rarer stuff I have. The live disc stayed the same, but exchanging 'The Perfect Kiss' (which is already on BBC Live) for 'Everyone Everywhere' and 'True Faith' from the 1993 Reading Festival.

Got those six version, but couldn't be arsed to put on the CDs, as they sound like they were recorded to the album straight from a dodgy copy of the Substance video. I'd like the one where it's all in one three minute song, but that's not officially available, if at all.

I'm seriously impressed this is something I have been trying to work out how to do but my limited technical skills are like Barney trying to rewire a kettle (probably).

What noise reduction plug-in are you using?

I think my soundcard maybe the weak point as I get a lot of background noise on the recordings. Any ideas?

Apparently because it was recorded during the winter, and Peter lobbed some snow down Barney's top during the vocal take.

Right, well, I'm very clueless when it comes to sound cards, latency, etc., but my fool-proof way is by sending the output of my pre-amp into a Philips hardware CD-recorder. Although I could simply record the sound to audio CD-RWs - enabling me to "grab" the wav files straight off the discs into the PC - I have an Edirol UA-1D audio capture USB interface, and can use the CR Recorder's inputs and outputs to act as an analogue to digital converter, getting me a clean and loud digital signal to send straight into Sound Forge. This bypasses any worry about hum from poor soundcards, and saves time burning, finalizing and erasing CD-RWs every few hours.

The noise reduction software is Sonic Foundry Noise Reduction 2.0, although I only use it sparingly on really loud clicks, as if you apply it to more than a few milliseconds, or even over a whole track, it can reduce the overall quality of a track - face it, one way or another, a noise reducer is removing part of the frequency range of the track, and can have a similar effect as mp3 compression if use all over the place. I'd rather have a subtle vinly surface noise at the end of a track than a dimished frequency range.

That's tracks rather than releases - I'm trying to collect every individual song or remix, on CD where possible, rather than every format/release, etc.

These lists are based around the many New Order discographies that appear online, and my own collection, and will probably be useful for other collectors seeking all the rare tracks. Every song in the "Tracks I Have" list is owned by myself, in the format stated. None are copies or bootlegs, and all the timings are confirmed by myself, and in some cases different to the times listed on the online discographies.

There's also links there to my complete list of "official" Joy Division releases, and a handy list of New Order tracks that are unavailable on CD - plenty of scope for further boxed-sets there, for sure. It's also on the 81/82 FEP CD :)

Yeah, I have that CD EP, that's where I remastered my 'Retro Revisted' version of the twelve inch from, as it's cut a tiny bit short on the released 'Retro' version.

Also on that Canadian CD EP (and my 'Retro Revisited') is the original full-length 'Hurt' - longer than the edit featured on 'Substance'. They did a lot of that for 'Substance', with 'Perfect Kiss', 'Shellshock' and 'Subculture' also being edited versions of the original 12 inchers.

That's a truly superb collection Andy, and it's very similar to something I've been doing myself over the last few months. I guess there's a few of us not entirely happy with the contents of Retro! I don't appear to have your level of technical expertise, but I know my way around Steinberg's Wavelab 3.0, which is what I used to capture those tracks from vinyl, and also to remaster everything that needed it! Some stuff just needed some hiss removing/reducing or a better EQ. Here's the track listing I ended up with. Nothing is in order by the way!

IF YOU DON'T ASK YOU DON'T GET!:D Seriously though that must have took you SOME TIME.I have recorded loads of CD-Rs mixes in my time for NOOL's and even ONE compilation takes ages when searching down a particular track.Keep us know when the last one is finished and show us the tracklisting.
