i know, this was discussed a million times. but i thought it would be useful to add Barney´s opinion. some of us have this NOMusic 81-89 songbook and we read his explanation. the doubt is if it´s really Barney writing this or if it was someone else. anyway, for all of you that don´t have this item here it is:

Notice that song book quote is about the year 1963 - not necessarily about the song 1963. Could be just a comment about the events in the year of the song title?

The comments about 1963 and JFK was just Barney talking generally about the year 1963, and JFK, not the song. There was an online streamed interview at the time Get Ready was released (an interview from GetMusic. To hear the interview just follow this link http://www.getmusic.com/calendar/audiochats/neworder/index.html and click on Hear The Chat Now) and a fan emailed in the question about the lyrics to 1963, and Barney just said it's a song from the point of view of a wife, being shot by her partner Johnny, then him going on to get another wife. The interviewer was a complete twat. Barney explained "1963" lyrics, saying that is a fictitious story about a man who kills his wife and the guy went "It sounds like an Eminem track to me". Really embarrassing.
The description he gives in that book doesn't marry up with the lyrics, as that would mean JFK shooting his missus, then remarrying, wouldn't it?

I read on the neworderweb.com message board (when it still existed) that "1963" was about a shade of paint and that "when Johnny came home with another wife" the shade of Dulux paint was painted over by another. Of course, that message board was full of twats.
One problem with Barney's explination about Marilyn Monroe: she had been dead for over a year prior to JFK's trip to Dallas (I believe it was August 1962). Sorry to be picky, but any history buff could tell you that...or a mildly compulsive-addictive history buff, for sure

It's said that many Power Corruption and Lies tracks were about the Falklands War....but who knows. Add copious drugs/alcohol to Barney's already dodgy lyric writing, and poof!
yes, the Malvinas/Falklands issue was discussed some time ago. Blue Monday and We All Stand seemed to me references to the war. but i´m too tired to look for the thread.... 
98% of the songs are about making words rhyme. The rest are about shagging, child abuse or wanking. I can't for the life of me believe that Barney would write a song about a war. Love Vigilantes was so clearly his ripoff of Vietnam it is almost laughable that they covered Vietnam. Doesn't all this "PCL is Falklands album" come from someone only half-reading Mark Johnson's quote about Crass releasing "How Does It Feel (to be the mother of 1000 Dead)" around the same time as Blue Monday was being recorded, at a time when they were thinking of calling it "How Does It Feel" ? I don't believe it for a minute. Saying that though, Barney did have a bit to say about the Navy at Portsmouth in 1984, so you never know.

I don't care to try and force Barney to change the lyrics to reflect a more accurate assesment of the historical record ("Johnny killed me to be with Marilyn/who'd been seen August 1962"), I'm just pointing out an error. In other words, I'm ruining it for everybody.
