What is the most depressing JD song?
I would say either Twenty-Four Hours, Decades, The Eternal, or IALP. Thoughts?

Having recently spent hour after hour singing 24 Hours and Passover, I'd choose either of those. The lyrics are just so desperate, particularly 24 Hours.
24 Hours and Sound of Music from the second Peel session...though I find them more desperate than depressing.

Decades is damn depressing; if I listen to it in the middle of the day I feel like going ot sleep right after, or go do something to cheer me up, like watch TV

Ok maybe that's a wee bit too morbid, so I'll go for probably my favourite JD track The Eternal.

I'd say 24 Hours or The Eternal, both are pretty bleak lyrically 
"The Eternal" has to be the most depressing JD song but also very beautiful. That piano coupled with Ian's slow singing is enough to give me goosebumps. "Decades" would be second perhaps tied with "Atmosphere". I love them slow JD songs. :D

Totally agree, 'The Eternal' is a song to slit your wrists and has me questioning the sanity of the writer....poor fellow.
Colony is the most utterly depressive JD song for me. Chainsaw guitar sound, repetative bass and drum loop, very harsh and bleak sound. At least 24 Hours, The Eternal and Decades all have melodies and some beautiful music.
Passover
nerd point... the production trick in this song of the vocals being whisperered as well as sung was nicked by hooky for the monaco album, on the song that goes 'in my mind i live in california'. second verse.
The Eternal...I've read in Mojo that it's about a kid with Down's syndrome that used to live next door to Ian's when he was a child. Or IALP, with the dog and the hangman lyrics. Or the end of the 12" version of SLC. So many to choose from.
what i love about passover is it seems to be a slow march towards oblivion, knowing that its coming but being unable to stop it any way.
that will be spinning a bit later on, just working my way through republic (-regret) whilst drinking some *strong* beer. I went to the funeral of the grandma of my first love (good friends now) and had a difficult time keeping it together (i.e. on the verge of uncontrollable blubbing). unable to untangle the feelings as a memory of Dot is invariably linked with the love/pain of the time. and I'm pretty much in love with the ex again... and i'm pretty sure she knows it... and i'm positive it will go nowhere...

"In a Lonely Place" if you count it as JD. Has anyone else set their own suicide note to music? If you don't count it, gotta say "The Eternal", at least in terms of the tone colors. Love that piano and desperate, crawling vocal. He wrote more depressing lyrics for other songs, though...
Autosuggestion is reasonably depressing I'd say. It certainly seems like it intends to be. :\ohwell:
I especially like the lyrics to Isolation 'cause it seems very relatable, especially during my high school days... "in fear everyday, every evening he calls her aloud from above carefully watched for a reason painstaking devotion and love... mother i tried please believe me i'm doing the best that i can..." simply great and realistic stuff

Glad someone above mentioned that great Monaco line about Hooky living in California in his mind: they should put that on the beardy one's gravestone. Or at least have it emblazoned on the sails of the burning ship that carries the Hookster off to Valhalla (via Manchester Canal), accompanied (of course) by "The Vikings".......
New Dawn Fades is a bit of a downer as well - so many of them are though, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see what was going through Curtis's mind 1979-80 !!
man 'twenty four hours' is soooooooooo dark and angry, those lyrics really make me want to lose all hope and cry my eyes out
