i was just wondering, what's your favourite version of 1963 if you had to pick?
mine's definitely the true faith b-side, without a doubt. what d'ya all think?

Without a shadow of doubt the Stephen Hague version on the b-side to True Faith was the best. Its a very under-rated NO song. The Arthur Baker mix was just a hidious mess.

Possibly the True Faith 12" original b-side, but it has never been a favourite. Maybe if it had been an instrumental ?
The one which came out in 94 or 95, i.e. the one Hooky actually appears on.
Can remember my first listen to this back in 1987 and just thinking - where's Hooky? Was never really a favourite for that reason alone but that 94/95 version rectified that.

Yeah, I'll second that: on the one hand the mid-90s version seems a bit too slick; on t'other I think it has extra depth - largely, as Al suggests, 'cos Hooky is foregrounded (doesn't he emerge belatedly at the end of the '87 version with a wonderfully mournful but painfully brief bassline - you just think, "where've yer been for the last four minutes?")

I love both but slightly prefer the Nineteen63-95 Arthur Baker remix. The original b-side version has a nice sparse feel to it but the '95 mix somehow sounds more like New Order. If only Baker (instead of Hague) had produced Republic...
The '95 mix also does away with the Prince-inspired drum intro. Prince? Yes. Listen to the drums on his early-1987 song "It". They've borrowed other things from the purple one as well. The sample of a baby's voice at the end of The Perfect Kiss 12" is the same as the one that ends Prince's "Delirious". Also, the sequenced bassline on the bridge of Round & Round is uncomfortably close to the sequenced bassline of "I Would Die 4 U".
I like the one on the 1994 British version of "Best of". A little cleaner sounding and better arranged than the '87 original. The 1995 (Baker?) version is fantastic too. I didn't learn to like the 95 version till I heard the 87 version later. (Yes, I'm such a recent fan I bought "best of..." before "Substance"!)
