Stupid newbie thread...

Sorry, but I have a stupid question. First off let me introduce myself. My name is Chris, I picked up Substance a few months ago, after hearing the album versions of Bizarre Love Triangle and Perfect Kiss. I thought both were brilliant and had to find out more about this band. I couldn't believe my ears upon hearing the album. The mixes of Bizarre Love Triangle and Perfect Kiss were even better than the originals. And I quickly fell in love with Blue Monday, Subculture, and 1963, among others. Since then I have bought Lowlife and Best of. I plan on getting all the albums.

Now my stupid question is, where was Touched by the Hand of God originally placed? It's not on any of the albums. I'm guessing either it was a single or a bside. Either way it is one of their most magnificent songs and I need to know, out of curiosity. Also, any recommendations on which album I should buy next? Thanks.

Touched was a non-album single. They've had many, though most of them are collected on Substance. One question: ever heard of Joy Division?

Of course I've heard of Joy Division. Don't own any albums but I'm familiar with songs like Love Will Tears Us Apart, Isolation, etc. It's good music, but I don't care for Ian's voice all that much. Also a bit too depressing for my (current) tastes.

Oh, and thanks for answering my question. I was thinking maybe it was the bside to Blue Monday 88. That was just a wild guess.

Actually, you're right. In the States one of the 12" singles of BM88 was indeed backed with Touched (and Touched by the Hand Of Dub).

Touched By The Hand Of God was recorded for a film called Salvation. The version on the soundtrack is a much rawer version than the one you have on Substance 87, but i think it's much better. The soundtrack also includes 4 New Order instrumentals and 2 tracks by Cabaret Voltaire (if you like them) the rest of the songs suck. If your lucky enough to find this, buy it. As for starting a New Order collection, buy the first album, but i must warn you some people hate this album (but i love it). Good luck collecting. :)

I don't know what version of Substance you have, but mine certainly doesn't contain Touched By The Hand Of God

I recommend you buy Technique or Get Ready next, they are easiest on the ear. Then buy Closer to cheer yourself up

depends what you like most Chris

low life is my fave, but technique is considered to be their most complete all round album by many. if you like the earlier guitary more experimental stuff then p c & l is the obvious choice but as an entry into the band would leave that til after technique (& even get ready).

dont bother with the rest of - the remixes arent up to much.

btw the best version of the perfect kiss is the 12" - you havent heard the song til youve heard that - if you can play vinyl get that next as its not on cd (apart from on a foreign promo to international) yet.

Well, thanks everyone for your hospitality. I'm unbelievably broke, but when I have enough money saved up I am going to buy either movement or pc+l. I like discovering/listening to a band chronologically, although I've already cheated by buying Substance.

Yes, I am indeed a fan of Depeche Mode. Agent Orange is my favorite DM instrumental, perhaps by any band.

Oh, and another thing. Instead of starting another thread... I was just watching The Crow : City of Angels this afternoon and heard Bush's version of 'In A Lonely Place.' Personally, I don't think it matches up to JD's, but was wondering what you guys thought of it, if any of you have heard it. It can be found on that movie's soundtrack and also the band's very akward remix cd.

I don't know what version of Substance you have, but mine certainly doesn't contain Touched By The Hand Of God Oh yeah, your right. Touched By The Hand Of God was released after Substance. What was i thinking?

Really? I have a DLed version of In A Lonely Place (I know, shame on me) and I could have sworn it was by Joy Division. It sounds different from the NO version found on Substance, and it was labeled as JD. Also, the band Bush claims that is a Joy Divison cover.

Since you're the expert, I will admit I was wrong. Now I'm going to cry myself to sleep as my self esteem sinks to new lows.

IALP was written by JD so you(and bush) were right, it is a JD song basically.

we already had that poll for ceremony, i think. or at least a thread or two. at any rate, we all know ceremony and IALP are really JD songs.
