Are New Order religious?

I don't know about you guys. I certainly never heard them describing themselves as especially religious, but to me a lot of Barney's lyrics seem to have a spiritual quality to them. They could of course simply mean nothing or be drug references, but it keeps popping up. I realize I'm taking them out of context but look at the following:

I'm sure there's more, but this only from the top of my head. I'm not of one opinion or the other, I'm certainly not trying to push religion and you guys can take this seriously or as a joke. (is this original enough?)

I dont think you will find them at Sunday church, or singing in the church chourus.

But Revenge is one big bible of lyrics. So Peter believes in someone.

I do believe Barney believes in God. I just dont know if he thinks Drugs are God.

This is one of those "is it really any of our business?" kind of questions, but I'm not trying to discourage you on this. I think they have some sort of spiritual belief system (with Ian, Rob, and Martin shaking off their mortal coils, it'd be awfully depressing to think that that's it, there's nowhere where they can go), but like a lot of post-WWII folk it's ambigious in terms of any specific church or faith.

Hmmm... if they are religious then maybe they can be the opening act for POD or Creed :D

yeh they probably are but why would it even be an issue? What counts most is the music we all love the most right?

"They probably are" and "it probably is none of our business", however, if you go by the examples in the above lyrics, then Barney at least has no problem in putting his beliefs, if thats what they are into the public sphere. I figure if something is made public by them, then we can talk about it. Anyway no matter what you say about how crap New Order lyrics are I feel they do at least sometimes write meaningful lyrics, certainly better than something like "baby I love you" which seems to what a lot of songs these days are about.

"yeah/yeah/yeah/yeah"

Another Canberran NO fan! Some of the quasi-religeous song titles/lyrics of NO/JD/Revenge could be put down to the fact that Ian, Bernie, Steve & Hooky(dunno about Gillian)were all grammar school kids & some of that may have subconciously rubbed off when it came to lyric-writing. Getting back to Steve, his most notable experience as a King's College student was being expelled for over-indulging in cough syrup(Compare that to the almost mandatory drugtaking spree that was Factory Records!)>

Dunno what constitutes "grammar" over there in the 4th world, but round 'ere "Grammar Schools" had fook all to do with religion and everything to do with teachers in mortar boards and capes wandering round like Mr.Chips. We'll have to ask Salford Grammar School inmate Chris Brogan !

Religion..humans cant live with it or without it

Hey,LowLife,re. your query about what grammar schools are in the great south land my answer is this; most of them are single-sex and run by the Anglican Church and I suppose that is what I assumed was or is still the case in some parts of the UK.

We all have our own reasons for living (or dying). The fact that the members of Joy Division continued says something about what they believe and the determination to keep going. So, if anything, it seems Bernard would have to believe in progression.

This is also demonstrated in the growth of NO's music from the Movement era through PCL and Low-Life into Technique & True Faith ect.

And being a mysterious bloke I wouldn't put it past the old Barnster to put all his "i'm not going to tell the interviewer" opinions into some cryptic form and then throw some pernod into the mix...just so we could speculate about it here!

Surely a better question on this site would be:"Are New Order a religion?"

I remember reading an interview with Barney saying something like he doesn't folow an organised religion but has hope God exists and there's something beyond death... just like the most of us...
