JJ Burnel (stranglers) on The bass players of punk

"Well, none of them were as good as me, that’s for sure! But some of them did great stuff. Peter Hook did some great stuff -- I mean, how can a guy play with his bass on the floor? That amazes me. Captain Sensible was a pretty good bass player. Jah Wobble was alright -- nice style, I’ll give him that, and Foxton was fine except he always made me wanna go, ‘Look at the audience, you c**t!’ Some people hide behind their instrument, looking at the fretboard all the time. Some just look at their shoes, or hide behind their hair... Loadsa good bass players, but none of them could approach me in speed -- listen to Mr Modesty -- or had the variety, lyricism and melody. [He laughs.] So there."

JJ vs Hook - thought this was celebrity death match for a moment? :eek3:

Burnel by a mile probably. Sorry Hooky!

Have to agree Al, know some fella who got his nose broken by Burnel at a gig at Eric's cos he was singing along with Cornwell. Sounds like a nice guy to me. Mind you, Hooky's a Salford lad, so he's always in with an outside chance. If only Gretton were still knockin' about!

Hooky could "eat Jean Jacques Burnel for breakfast". Well, according to Sounds anyway...

When was this quote? It sounds idiotic now, given the fact that Hooky and Wobble have gone on to show they are bass masters, but in the late '70s early 80s (you do introduce it as the bass players of 'Punk')it makes a little more sense. Burnell always was an unpleasant arrogant tosser.

Purely in fist-fightintg terms though, Burnel could surely muller Hooky? He is, after all, a bit of an expert in the martial arts, isn't he?

And Hooky is only 5'6!

From a review of a Manchester gig (doesn't say what venue) published 16-9-78:

"Still, although Joy Division are a fine action-packed band, they still seem to me to be somewhat limited and fairly samey. They still tend to lock themselves inside this Nazi-history chic, a subject that has been exploited beyond tolerance over the past couple of years. But all in all a very interesting band with a bass player who could eat Jean-Jacques for breakfast. See them."

No mention of the author either, sorry!

Agree with you completely if you are talking about New Order bassist.

But will NEVER agree if you are talking about Joy Division's bassist Peter Hook :nono:

Well that explains how he could play with his bass on the floor!

Of course, the whole discussion of who the better bass player is veers into the whole guitar god territory the punks rebelled against.

Other way round if anything Julio?

Least Hooky looked a little bit 'street' in the Order.

In Joy Division he had a penchant for leather caps and dodgy taches.

This would be Burnel on the right, hard barsteward! -

I've got most of the Jah Wobble CDs, all the Stranglers stuff with Cornwell and of course JD/No. For me bass players are about more than rhythmn - this is the strength of both Hooky and JJ, they can hold a tune to the point that you don't think their band is complete without them. If we judge on rhythmn alone I think JJ has it. Is Hooky a bass player or a guitarist with strings missing or a guitarist that can't do chords? New Order's bass is primarily from the keyboards - Hooky provides almost a lead guitarist's function. Jah Wobble is working on a different planet altogether - Lemmy taught Sid who taught Jah who gave the world Metal Box. I never tire of hearing Mr Wobble's low frequency fretwork. Also Wobble can't sing - which gives him something else in common with Hooky. Sorry, what was the question again?

Is JJ the guy who played Something Better Change and No More Heroes with The Stranglers?

They were all "unpleasant, arrogant tossers". Really nasty guys by all accounts.

I've got The Stranglers 77-90 CD but I didn't know that Walk on By was a cover :nono: Who wrote that?

Whilst I respect the fact that this is a New Order newsgroup, some people should really ditch the rose-tinted spectacles.

Burnel would muller Hooky in a fight - isn't anyone aware of Burnel's fighting credentials?! Sorry, Hooky!

Oh, and Hooky's a better bass player! Just.

Is there actually any evidence anywhere of Hooky being a hardman ? Sure, he's jumped into a few fights over the years according to all the books, and has always apparently had to be baled out. Twatting someone with a headstock isn't the same, and these days he always has the likes of Sarge around. Myth or reality ?(not that I wish to find out personally !!)

Aye, but without the frets you can't inflict as much damage on the people in the front row.

What about Alan Partridge doing a high-shouldered air bass to Numan's "Music for Chameleons" in the recent series?!

One of the funniest things I've seen in years (check out the menu on the DVD for a brilliant clip).

I'm sure Mark King (Level 42 - slap bass wanker) could take 'em both on - actually I'd pay to see Hooky and JJ kicking the shit out of that talentless piece of turd.:thumb:

Mark King once said in an interview that he would find it very difficult to play in a 'rock' style, so he sticks to what he does best, so fair enough...

As for Al's theory on JJ Burnell beating Hooky in a fight - that's possible, but being an ex-martial artist, I i know that a street fight is VERY different. Even if you are 5th Dan, a well placed and unexpected kick to the goolies leaves you incapable of defending yourself. Being smashed on the head with a bottle from behind also incapacitates, so I think the winner would be the one most willing to fight 'dirty'.

Mick Karn of Japan is an absolutely superb bassist and for me is the best of his type.

BUT.... being technically gifted doesn't make you the best. It's like saying that someone is the best painter. It's all about opinion.

I like the lines about Hookey being a guitarist with some strings missing. THAT makes sense!

However in a fight I think that JJ and Hookey would be a handbags at 10 paces affair:nod:

JJ would be up against Sarge these days, in any case, before he got anywhere near Hooky !

Course, JJ would have trouble against Mr & Mrs Morris in one of their tanks. Let's see how good a black belt is against armour plate...
