OK, now even Elvis Costello has his very own 'Recycle'...

Edsel Records has just put out 3 box sets, holding all of EC's original singles between 1977 & 1986 (35 in all) and including all mixes ever put out on various singles formats. And they are being sold at a whopping 42 Euro... apiece.

As much as I appreciate Elvis Costello, surely his 'fanbase' isn't much bigger than New Order's these days? Or is it? So why still no Recycle??

I would think they'd have to strike a licensing deal... but with whom?

it can't be that expensive. Duran Duran released a box of 13 singles with original artwork for under 50bucks...i found mine for 29 dollars. It can't be that hard or expensive to work out.

and I've bought both the Stranglers box sets - full reproductions of the sleeves - original track listings. I'll never listen to them of course - who wants to waste time on a 5 minutes (ho, ho, ho little stranglers joke there) cd?

True, but you can always make your very own CD-R compilation out of it!

Looking forward to the Bunnymen remasterings - the original albums will now contain unreleased versions as well, including the first take on Porcupine that nearly finished the band in 1982 !

Crocodiles contains many of the original greatest hits, Rescue, Crocodiles and Do It Clean (at least the remaster will contain the latter), Porcupine has The Cutter and The Back of Love, Ocean Rain has Silver and The Killing Moon - all are worth getting as they all contain at least one gem. Problem with the Bunnymen was always that they wrote fantastic singles and lesser album tracks. Crocodiles was the most consistent one to me, but then again Heaven Up Here is also great. As you've already got the singles, treat yourself to Heaven Up Here.

What's your favorite Echo's album?

Crocodiles - learned how to play it from start to finish in only a couple of hours. Fantastic stuff !

That is a great song. Pity the rest of the record sounds like a bad U2 (is that redundant?) album. Anyone looking for a good starting point just needs to go to the live version of Crocodiles from the "Shine so hard" EP. I see it's included on the Crocodiles reissue. That's about as good as a rock band gets.

Just picked up their box set - Crystal Days - and am looking forward to listening to it over the weekend (I hope).

Personally, I think they did. Les added style, and is a great bassist. I think they should never have reformed though, they've only contributed a handful of half-decent songs since they did. Should have called it a day in 1988.

bought Heaven Up Here on saturday based on what you said & the reviews in the inkies/ glossies also picked up the Velvets remastered Loaded - now a double! yet to listen to either though...

You won't be disappointed - there's not as many big singles on Heaven Up Here (but then again you already have Songs To Learn And Sing), but there are some of the best songs they ever wrote. Show of Strength, With A Hip, Over The Wall, Zimbo, Turquoise Days, all quality.

Back to the subject of singles boxes - even bloody Marillion have done one, so they must sell enough to justify the production costs. I would have thought a New Order one (or four) would do very well. Mute keep the D****** M*** ones available, so they must be worth it for a label to do - especially at Christmas...
