Well I don’t know about you guys but New Order seem to be everywhere at the moment.
Some recent examples from New Zealand…
- Ford have been using ‘Slow Jam’ as the music backdrop for pushing it’s cars on the tele for yonks - at least a year.
- American Express were using ‘Blue Monday’ as the music to it’s ‘Blue’ card on the TV a year or so back.
- 60 MPH is being used as one of the songs to promote the current Rugby World Cup.
- A couple of years ago I was watching a documentary (made in NZ) and some of the backing music consisted of ‘Leaders of Men’ (of all songs).
- There was an 80’s flashback documentary on last week and I thought to myself, I’ll watch that cause they are bound to have Blue Monday in there somewhere. Well, they played snippets of Blue Monday (88), She’s Lost Control, Love Will Tear Us Apart and the video for LWTUA. The presenter was in a room where a LWTUA poster featured prominently on the wall and there was specific mention of the fact that LWTUA made it to number 1 in the NZ charts not once, but twice! This without any radio play. The explanation for it’s success was put down to an alternative Sunday night music video program called ‘Radio With Pictures’ that ran for about 10 years here in the 80’s. No other band featured as often or as prominently as New Order/Joy Division in this documentary.
Is it because fruit-loops like us are now some of the people who influence sales & marketing campaigns or could it be that their music is just bloody great and is being recognised by the general population? I for one in the past few years have noticed a huge increase in other bands/artists citing New Order/Joy Division as an influence…
U2 Manic Street Preachers Moby Smashing Pumpkins
…to name but a few.
What do you reckon?
